Little Black Submarines ザ・ブラック・キーズ (The Black Keys)

昨年の４月The Black KeysのLonely Boyのミュージック・ヴィデオを見た時の衝撃は今でも忘れられません。見たところ，適当につくった安っぽいものに思えたからです。いやこれではマズいので少し婉曲な表現をするなら「シンプル」なとでも申しましょうか。 http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2012/04/lonely-boys-black-keys.html
とにかく最初から最後まで，一人の男性が音楽に合わせて踊るだけ。予算をたっぷりかけた豪華なミュージック・ヴィデオを見慣れていると，多少わびしい感じがするかもしれませんが，個人的には，不思議にクールなヴァイブを感じるヴィデオでした。
ところで，この曲の題名のLittle Black Submarinesについて，ドラッグの過剰摂取による昏睡状態を表しているという説と，うつ状態を表しているという説がありますが， 個人的には人生における辛い時期を表しているのではないかと考えています。別れかもしれませんし，離婚かもしれません，失職したことを表しているとも考えられますし，病気なのかもしれません。
I still remember when I first watched their "Lonely Boy" music video last April, I was surprised to find it looked rather cheap and shabby.  Should I employ the euphemism for that?  Well, at the simplicity, then.

During the entire video, one guy keeps dancing to the music.  Nothing more, nothing less.  To the eye of those who get used to gorgeous big budget music videos, it seems to be rather bleak and dull but it gave me somewhat cool vibe.
As for the title "Little Black Submarine," some say it represents some kind of coma caused by drug overdose.  Others say it does depression.  I'd say it represents a tough period in one's life.  It could be a breakup, the loss of a loved one, unemployment and a battle with an illness.

（余談）

この曲のヴィデオもかなりシンプルです。これはあれでしょうか，The Black Keysのなかで，金のかかったオサレなヴィデオは作ってはならんという示し合せでもあるのでしょうか？それともそんなfancyなヴィデオがなくとも，十分やっていけるという自信の表れなのでしょうか？おそらく両方だとは思うのですが，それならいっそあのLonely Boyのオジサンをレギュラーにして欲しいと思ってしまいます。

ところでそれで思い出しましたが，英語のfancyは日本語のファンシーとは違って「高級」なという意味です。したがって，「ファンシーなヴィデオ」と言った場合は，ゴージャス感や高級感の漂うヴィデオなのであって，そこには〇ティやネズミーマウスやクマなどのキャラはまず登場しないことを申し添えておきます。

妹曰く，Dancing Queenの余談( http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/02/dancing-queen-abba.html )を読んで翌日の投稿はUsherの曲（具体的に言うと「エロい曲」）だと確信したとか。残念ですが，我が妹でありながら，どうもヤツは私に対して変な思い込みがあるようです。彼女が言うには，自分と同様に考えている人が必ずいるはずであるからUsherの曲をすべきなんだとか。そうなんですか？私にはわかりません。それはともかく，このヴィデオのダンスが素晴らしく一見の価値があると思うので投稿しました。（無論，曲も好きですよ）。

My sister told me that after reading the parentheses of "Dancing Queen"(http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/02/dancing-queen-abba.html), she was convinced the entry for the next day would be one of Usher's song. specifically a "a bit too sexy" one.  I'm afraid I should say that being my sister, she was too prejudiced to understand me.  She insisted that I should post one of his songs saying some people must have thought as she did.  Was she right?  Well, I don't know.  Anyway, I post this song because I find his dance in the music video is awesome and worth watching.  （Oh I love the music, of course.)

* ギャグのオチを解説するのくらい空しいものもないのですが，最初の方で「話のオチはしっかり受け止めろよ」と言われているので，一応解説させていただきます。

「酷い目に遭わされた」たとえとして，ドレッド・ヘアを引き合いに出していますが，ご覧いただくとわかるように，ラップを担当しているPitbullはスキンヘッドです。

** この部分，Mr. Worldwideは彼のミックス・テープの題名らしい。ただ私見ですがこのMr. Worldwideの部分には，「相手の女性の国籍は問わない」という意味もあると睨んでおります。ええ邪心持ちの誹りは甘受いたしますとも。

（余談）

いやその発想はなかったですね。実はこの曲に関して，海外の歌詞サイトに投稿されていた解釈のなかで，ひときわ目を引いたものがありました。よく言えば斬新，有体に言えば深読みしすぎだと思われるもので，一言で言えば，世紀末的世界における戦争の残酷さと司法省による権力の濫用について歌った曲なんだとか。・・・・ええ？そうですか？

このいわば「陰謀説」によれば，DJはThe Department of Justice（司法省）の略，クラブはdeath camp（死の収容所），そこでは主人公（Usher）は自分の意思で恋愛することはかなわず，権力側が女性を与える。ために「自分の身体を自分で自由に出来ない（No control of my body）」状態になるらしい。

これ以外の点についても詳細に説明してあるのですが，いちいち和訳するのが面倒なので，一番下に転載しておきました。英語ですが，興味のある方はお読みください。

ただこれだけは断言できることが一つあります。これを書いた人物は１０代男子です。日本で言うなら中学生か高校生あたり。ええ間違いありません。ソースは・・・ヒミツです。

それはともかく，そこまで深く読み込まないとわからないのでは，そもそもダンス・ミュージックの曲にして発表する意味があまりないような気がするのですが，皆様はどうお考えでしょうか？

This song is a horrific portrayal of the atrocities of war in a post-apocalyptic setting, and a critique of the abuses of power the Department of Justice is granted in America. It is quite a clever song, he is a master of the metaphor, which adds to its rich verbal depictions.

In the beginning, Usher is walking into the "club," which is a euphemism for a death camp. You can tell that there has already been a massive amount of murder that has taken place, so much in fact that the slightest movement causes the bodies he walks on to gently rock from side to side. He is thankful that another week has passed, even if he's not sure why, because he feels like a zombie only brought back to life by occasional moments of unspeakable terror.

Suddenly, a guard yells, "HANDS UP!" and every prisoner fearfully complies. Usher has no control over his body, they have taken even that from him. He seems to recognize the guard by his eyes, he is likely a former friend who is now on the other side. Suddenly, he is marched into the forced copulation room, where the Department of Justice (D.J.) has forced him to breed with a selected female. The guard taunts him, telling him to do the forbidden "dance" like it's the last night of his life, which he knows it well may be.

Usher briefly dreams of revenge as he is allowed his one drink of the day. He dreams of setting the camp on fire, even using the term "mother fucker" to describe it, a brilliant metaphor as the camp has never physically touched his mother. When the "music" (brilliant, again) of the surrounding stops, he is once more forced to put his hands up while the guard frisks him for any food or water he may be trying to feebly hold onto. Once again, he swears revenge to "get the guard right" while cursing the Department of Justice for making a mockery of love.

Pitbull then gives his account of what the death camps are like for Latin American citizens. You can see that because he is more familiar with these nation's histories of social and political turmoil, he pays little attention to the physical suffering around him, instead preferring to think of his now deceased wife, and how they used to fornicate while playing music loudly in his parent's basement, though he is sorry for her passing.

He tries to yell at Tyrone, the guard, screaming and "hollering" out in rage, telling him he could easily jump through these "foot hoops" that he is chained in. Instead, Tyrone informs him that the chains are intentionally left loose as a sign of false hope, telling him that the new world order is "global." Dispirited, Pitbull then recalls an earlier conversation he had with his wife in Spanish, when he joked about being her OBGYN.

In the end, the two simply remind the listeners of the abuses of power that may be allowed by the Department of Justice if nobody takes action to limit them. They will force people to constantly live every night like it is their last, cursing the D.J. that they will some day get what they deserve, and, with the final line of the song, sarcastically thanking them for all that they've done to these poor two men.

Irresistible ワン・ダイレクション (One Direction)

曲のメッセージは実にシンプルです。したがってここで取り上げたのにはそれ以外の理由があります。実はこの曲，歌詞を自然な日本語のそれに置き換えるのが思う以上にも難しいからです。そもそも「It's in your lips and in your kiss, It's in your touch and your fingertips, And it's in all the things and other things」に登場する指示代名詞の「it」は何を表しているのでしょうか？そしてこの点をはっきりさせない限り，この歌詞を自然な訳文にすることはできません。そこで皆さんにお伺いします。この「it」，ここでは一体何を指しているのでしょうか？正解は（といっても私の考える正解に過ぎませんが）訳文中に出ています。
The message the song carries is quite simple.  So the reason that I picked it up here lies somewhere else.  Translating its lyrics into Japanese, especially natural sounding one isn't as easy as it seems to be.  What does "it" in lines "It's in your lips and in your kiss, It's in your touch and your fingertips, And it's in all the things and other things"represent in the first place?  Without specifying what it represents, you cannot make the lyrics sound natural.  So here's a quiz for you.  What does "it" represent here?  My answer is shown in the Japanese translation.

一方向は正統派アイドルなので，彼らの曲には，例えばオルタナ系の曲に見られるような難解さはあまりありませんが，そうはいってもどれもが「お気楽な曲」かというと意外にそうでもない場合もあります。

無論，Live While We Are YoungやKiss You，One Thing, What Makes You Beautifulのようなお気楽な曲も多い上，シングル・カットされてヒットするのはむしろそちらの方だったりするのですが，バラード系の曲には（少なくとも歌詞という点から見ると）面白いものが少なくありません。

この曲もそのひとつ。登場人物の2人は，かつては付き合っていたものの，今は付き合っていないということだけはわかるのですが，どういう経緯で2人が別れたのかがはっきりしません。海外の解釈も

①主人公が冷めてきたが，そのことを言いだせない
②相手から別れを切り出されて別れたものの，完全に縁が切れているわけではない

の２つに分かれていますが，アイドルという立場上，①ではいかにもまずいと思われるので（実際はこちらの方が説得力があったりするのですが），おそらく②でありましょう。

したがって，訳文もこちらの説に基づいて作っております。

「初恋は決して忘れない」とか。その真偽はともかくとして，本館に最初にコメントがついた時の気持は決して忘れられません。昨年の1月のことです。James MorrisonのThe Pieces Don't Fit Anymoreについたものが最初のコメントでした。それを記念して翌月2月を（勝手に）James Morrison 特別（強化）月間にしてしまいました。以来，毎月最低でも１つは彼の曲を取り上げることにしています。そして今月の曲がこちらです。
"You'll never forget your first love," they say.  I'm not sure if it's true or not but I'll never forget how I felt when I got the first comment on my blog.  In January 2012, I got a comment on James Morrison's "The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore," which  was the first time.  I was so elated and made last February "James Morrison Special Month" in honor of it.  Since then I have kept picking up at least one song from his discography as my blog entry every month.  This is the latest on the list.

（余談）

ところでこの曲に限らず，ラヴソングには「ただ一人の人」的表現がお約束ですが，以前どこかで「人間は一生に３回恋をする」というのを読んだことがあります。何故３回なのかはわかりませんが，どうやらそうであるらしい。

ただ周囲を見渡すと，「３回？一桁違うだろ？」と言いたくなるようなヤツも少なくない。また彼らにこの「人生恋は３回説」を教えると，反論されるかと思いきや，皆一様に「全くだ」と納得する。これが個人的にずっと理解できませんでした。

しかしこれはアレなのですね。ビルボード・チャート。数多ある恋愛のうちから，トップ３だけを選んで「恋」として認定するという。これなら母集団がどれほど大きくとも何の問題もありません。

こうして考えてみると，件の「人間は一生に３回恋をする」という表現の真の意味は，「人間は自分の恋愛のトップ３だけを『恋』に認定し，それ以外は『気の迷い』や『錯覚』として却下する」ということなのかもしれません。

それで題名のTwenty Eightは一体何を表しているんでしょうか？（28グラムは約１オンスであり，ために違法薬物の取引をほのめかしているという説，The Weekndにとって，これが28曲目に発表した曲であり，なおかつ初めてのボーナス・トラックであるとする説などがありますが，真相は定かではありません。個人的には，単に相手を連れ帰ってから28日（4週間）が経過したという意味だと想っています。
それはともかく，ここでお願いしたいことがあります。下のヴィデオをご覧になる場合には，まず周囲に人がいないことを確認なさってください。理由ですか？トップレスの女性が複数登場するからです。したがって現場を目撃されると，特に職場では，まずいことになる可能性が出てきます。

The Weeknd，何度見ても久保田利伸に見えて仕方ないのは私だけでしょうか？あるいはトミーズ雅にも似ているような気が・・・・。そう思うともう虚心では彼の顔が見られなくなります。

それにしても，My Chemical RomanceのGerard Wayといい，このThe Weekndといい，トミーズ雅の守備範囲の広さには驚かされるばかりです。

歌詞に登場する相手は文字通り「彼を起こした（＝目覚めさせた）」のでしょうか？それともこれはメタファーなんでしょうか？最初は文字通り「起こした（＝目覚めさせた）」のだと思っていたのですが，それだけではないのではないかと思い始めました。仮にそうだとすると，もう一つの「起こした」というのは一体どういうことなのでしょうか？個人的には，主人公（の彼）の相手（の彼女）に対する見方が変わったのだと思っています。それ以前，主人公は相手のことを単なる友人だと思っていたが，今は恋人（彼女／妻）の候補として見るようになったというわけです。
それはともかく，小説やＴＶドラマそして映画などにはこういう話がよく登場します。すなわち，長い間ずっと友人だったのに，ある日相手のことが好きになってしまうというアレです。こういう事はよくあるんでしょうか？個人的にはそういう経験がないのでわかりません。友人に聞いてみたいと思います。
Did the second person in the lyrics literally "wake him up" or metaphorically do?  I first thought she (maybe) did literally, but soon started thinking otherwise.  Specifically, she "woke him me up" in both ways   If so, what does "wake him up" metaphorically represent then?  I think he starts looking the second person from a different perspective.  Before he regarded her as a friend but now he starts looking at her as a potential partner (girlfriend/wife).

一体主人公は相手に何をしたのか？

ここからは私の勝手な想像なのですが，前の晩，主人公と相手は「ルビコン川を渡ってしまった（←わかりにくかったらすみません）」のだと思われます。

ゲームの下りからもわかるように，おそらく主人公は，彼女の兄弟（確率的に兄でしょう）の友人で，彼女とは旧知の仲だったのですが，以前はただの友人だったのでしょう。

しかしなにかのはずみで前の晩に「ルビコン川を渡って」しまい，そして翌朝，自分を起こしてくれた彼女の意外なかわいさに気付くというストーリーです。

またそう考えると，冒頭のタトゥの下りに説得力が出ます。急に気分が盛り上がってしまって，妄想が炸裂するという流れですが，確かに身に覚えがあります。まだなにも確実なものがないのに，気持ちだけが先走るというアレです。

かのSpitzも「チェリー」で「愛してるの響きだけで強くなれる気がしたよ」と歌っておりますが，ひょっとするとこういう「大いなる勘違い」が人類の繁栄に大きく貢献しているのかもしれません。

（余談）

おお，流石は名うての刺客，Ed Sheeranです。特に劇的な事件が起こるでもない（いや実際にはおそらく前の晩に起こっているのですが），有体に言えばどうでもいいことを，見事にロマンティックに歌い上げています。凡人には到底真似が出来ません。

とりわけハートのペンダントにふれた下りなど，その圧倒的な描写力に思わず唸りました。このテクをもってすれば，余程の強敵でない限り，容易く「殺られ」るものと思われます。

そう考えながら，ふとアルバム・ジャケットに目をやったところ，一瞬彼が愛用のM16アサルト・ライフルで標的を狙うゴルゴに見えました・・・・。

お察しの通り，Zara Larssonつながりでこの曲を選んだのですが，実はそれだけが理由ではありません。実は，ABBAのAgnetha Fältskogが，WestlifeやBritney Spearsのヒット曲を手掛けたJörgen Elofssonと組んで，今年英語のアルバムを出すべく準備しているという話を聞いたからです。
Wikipediaによると，彼女は1950年生まれで現在62歳。年齢のことを考えると，音楽業界にカムバックするのはそれほどたやすくないと思うので少し心を動かされました。

映画「マンマ・ミーア」のせいなのか？音楽には全く詳しくないので，その理由はわかりませんが，この曲を聞くと何故か「健全」な感じがします。実際には，歌詞を仔細に読めばわかるように，17歳の少女が夜遊びする話なので，健全どころか教育委員会からクレームのひとつも入りそうな内容です。

ここ本館ではすでに500曲以上を和訳してきましたが，そのかなりの部分がラヴソングです。そしてその中の90曲以上がGotyeのSomebody That I Used To KnowやAdeleのRolling In The Deepのような破局ソングであり，50曲ほどが. Bruno MarsのJust The Way You AreやJason MrazのLuckyといったロマンティックな（正統派）ラヴ・ソングです。
この曲はどちらとも違います。確かにタイトルは  Love Songsですし，ギクシャクしはじめた恋愛関係を歌っているようにも聞えますが，実際には恋愛とは関係のない曲です。聞くところによると，Sara Bareillesは，意思に反してラヴソングを書くよう強要するレイベルに対してこの曲を 書いたのだとか。それを踏まえて歌詞を見ると，なるほど説得力があります。
I've already translated more than 500 songs into Japanese and a significant part of them are love songs.  More than 90 of them are breakup songs like Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know and Adele's Rolling In The Deep.  About 50 are romantic ones like Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars and Lucky by Jason Mraz.
This song is different from both of them.  It's true that the song carries the title of "Love Songs" and sounds like it's about a faltering relationship but in fact it has nothing to do with it.  They say Sara Bareilles wrote this to her label who insisted her to write love songs which she didn't want to.  Keeping that in mind, you'll find the lyrics more convincing.

この箇所，具体的に何を指しているのかが今一つ不明です。「灯り」は何のメタファーなのか。レイベルへのf*** youソングだとすると，Sara Bareillesの「芸風」と考えるのが妥当なのでしょうが確信はありません。

ここ本館で取り上げた彼女の曲はこの他にもう一曲あって，それがKing of Anythingなのですが，http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2011/09/king-of-anything-sara-bareilles.html こちらも（真偽のほどはともかく）レイベルとの関係を歌ったもの。

こういう場合，レイベルとしてはどうなんでしょうか？現実的には曲がヒットするのですから文句はないのかもしれませんが，私がレイベルなら面白くないと思います。しかもコケにされた曲ばかりがヒットするとあっては猶更です。

ただそこまで想定した上でのことであれば，それはもうレイベル（の重役）が一枚上手です。以前投稿したLinkin ParkのOne Step Closerにも似たような背景があったように記憶していますが，もしこうなることがすべて織り込み済みなのだとしたら，そのレイベル（の重役），人心の掌握及び操作という点において，なかなかに侮れません。

仮にそうであった場合，それほどの能力を一企業で終わらせるのは余りに惜しい。色々と問題が山積している昨今，是非それを国家外交レベルで活かして欲しいところです。

Uncover ザラ・ラーソン (Zara Larsson)

最初この曲を聴いた時，「あれ，これってEmeli SandeのRead All About It と RihannaのDiamondsを合わせたような曲だなあ」とつぶやいてしまいましたが，おそらくこう感じるのは私だけではないと思います。ただそれならこの曲がイヤなのかというと実は違います。むしろ好きなのですが，その理由は彼女の声にあります。少女っぽい（実際15歳なので少女なのですが）外見とは裏腹に，彼女の声はRihannaに似ています。またCharliceの声に似ている時もあります。
Listening to the song for the first time, I told myself, "Hey, isn't this a combination of Emeli Sande's Read All About It and Rihanna's Diamonds"?  I'm sure I'm not the only one who think this way.  Do I hate the song, then?  No, not at all.  Actually I love it.  It's her voice that made me love the song.  Despite her rather girlish looking (well, she is 15 and really is), her voice sounds like that of Rihanna.  It sometimes reminds me of that of Charlice, too.

ところで，*の部分「2人ずっと一緒にいれば，このまま決して変わらない」ですが，英語歌詞をご覧いただくとおわかりのように一種の掛詞になっています。

したがって，なろうことならこの部分，訳文にも反映させたかったのですが，私の力ではどうしても無理でした。いや，実は全く考えないわけではなく；

2人（ににん）が幸（し）あわせになる　＝　２×２＝４というのも考えてみたのですが，ロマンティックな気分が台無しになるだけでなく，いきなりそこに「大喜利」の世界が展開してしまい，完全に元の歌詞世界に戻れなくなってしまうので思いとどまりました。

この曲，私が利用している歌詞サイトのトップ100に先日登場したばかりですが，ここにはいわゆるチャートの常連アーティストの曲以外に，海外ドラマや映画，オーディション番組などで使用された曲がよく登場します。これらの曲は，数か月後日本でも注目されることが少なくないので今回取り上げてみました。

ところで，なんとなく「コブシ」が回っているような気がするのは私だけでしょうか？そう考えてみると，彼女の声が石川さゆりに聞こえて，今にも「津軽海峡ぉお～冬ぅう～景ぇぇ～色ぃぃぃい～」と始まりそうな気が・・・・。

One Way Or Another ブロンディ／ワン・ダイレクション (Blondie / One Direction)

この曲，映画「コヨーテ・アグリー」に使用されていますが，そもそも一体何について歌った曲なのでしょうか？これまでそのことについて考えたことはないのですが，なんとなく片思いの曲であって，相手のことが好きになった主人公が，どうにかして相手と付き合おうとする曲だと思っていました。
しかし実際は違います。先日投稿したEvery Breath You Take同様，ストーカーの曲であるようです。
リード・ヴォーカルのDeborah Harryは，これは70年台に付き合っていたストーカーチックな元彼について書いた曲だと語っています。当時まだ「ストーカー」という言葉はなかったと思いますが，そういう人間は間違いなく存在したわけですね。
The song was featured in a Hollywood film "Coyote Ugly."  Anyway, what's this song exactly about in the first place?  I've never wondered about it before and had a feeling that the song is about a crush.  The protagonist falls for the second person and is desperate to be together with the person.
Well, actually it's not.  It's a stalker song as well as Every Breath You Take I posted last month.
Deborah Harry, the lead vocal told she wrote this for her ex. boyfriend back in 1970s who was pretty much a stalke.  There's no word like "staler" for such a person at that time but he did exist.

* ショッピング・センターの箇所に登場する「rat food」という単語。これが一体何を表しているのかは明確ではありません。「最終的にネズミに食われてしまうもの」という意味であるとすれば「食料品」というほどの意味でしょうが，一応訳文では「ネズミのエサ」とそのまま訳しました。

ただこの単語を最初に目にした時，最初に脳裏に浮かんだのは，実は「殺鼠剤」でした。そして仮にこの意味だと考えると，恐ろしさに一層拍車がかかりそうです。

先日取り上げたEvery Breath You Takeとともに，王道の（？）ストーカー・ソングです。明るいアップテンポの曲調とは裏腹に内容はとにかく怖い。

この曲，リードでも述べたように，主人公は男性（元彼）だと思われます。ただ日本語と異なり，英語はあまり性を意識させない（gender-conscious）言語なので，主人公が女性と考えることも可能です。

ただそれならいささかでも怖さが和らぐかというと，決してそうではなく，むしろその場合，ストーカーに加えて「肉食系」となります。しかも歌っているのがあのDeborah姐さんです。「狙われてる」とか「ロック・オン」とかそういった単語が脳裏に浮かぶのは私だけでしょうか？

実はこの曲，かの一方向がカヴァーするという話を先日小耳に挟みました。先日東京で行ったライヴでもや歌ったらしいのですが，何故彼らがストーカーソングを？思わずにはいられません。むしろストークされてる方だと思うんですがね。

銃乱射事件や連続殺人事件などを耳にするたび，「生まれつきの殺人鬼」や「犯罪者」というものが存在するのだろうかと考えてしまいます。どんな犯罪者であっても，犯罪者として生まれてきたわけではなく，たとえどれほど冷酷極まりない犯罪者であっても，かつては無邪気な赤ん坊だったはず。一体何が原因でそうなってしまったのでしょうか？「タラレバ」には何の意味もないとわかっていますが，それでも考えずにはいられません。

第一連に登場する「spider」と「V」。調べてみたのですが，残念ながら現時点ではこれらが一体何を指すのかが判然としません。

ただ前者の候補としては，「裏切り者」「密告者」という線が濃厚です。一方，後者の候補としては，車（vehicle），薬物（varium)などが挙げられています。個人的には，前後の文脈から「さっさとそういう生活を止めろ」と言っているように思えるので，ここでは自動車のV (vehicle）と考え，暫定的に「有り金を持ってここから出てけ」と訳しておくことにします。

さて，このK Kokeというラッパー，Wikipediaによると2011年に27歳男性に対する殺人未遂容疑等で10代の少年4人とともに告訴されたものの，結局すべての罪状について無罪判決を受けていますが，これによって歌詞に一層説得力が加わるような気がします。

（余談）

基本的にここ本館では英語歌詞は海外のサイトからそのまま引っ張ってきているのですが，洋楽の歌詞というのは，この曲の歌詞のように掲載しているサイトによって微妙に異なる場合が少なくありません。特にラップの場合はそれが著しいような気がします。

したがってどの歌詞を採用するかで訳文も多少変わってしまいます。無論曲の大筋が変わってしまうことはほとんどありませんが，それでもそれに続く箇所の意味合いが変わってくることは少なくありません。

さらに厄介なのが，筋の通る歌詞が必ずしも正しいわけではないという点です。明らかに文法的におかしい歌詞が実はCDブックレットに記載されている正式なものである場合もかなりあります。

こういう場合，別ヴァージョン（＝筋の通る歌詞）を採用したくなるのが人情。内心「ああ～こっちの歌詞にしてくれりゃよかったのに」と思いながら，わけのわからない「正式」な歌詞を和訳していると，一抹の空しさを覚えたりします。

高校生の頃，とにかく歴史の授業がキライでした。全く興味が持てず，試験のために過去の単調な歴史を暗記するなど時間の無駄だと思っていました。バカでしたね。今はわかります。歴史は単なる過去の出来事ではない。むしろ「現在の記憶」です。そしてその一部はこの曲のように音楽のなかにその姿を留めます。今のこの瞬間もすぐに通り過ぎて歴史の一部です。

この曲は，ベルリンの壁が崩壊する以前，その壁の上の砲塔の下で毎日デートを重ねていたドイツ人のカップルの話だそうです。David Bowieは当時ベルリンに住んでいて，その話にインスピレーションを得てこの曲を書いたというのが有名な話です。この点についてDavid Bowieは2003Performing Songwriter magazineに次のように語ったとか：

「これは今だからできる話。当時はいつも（曲のモデルは）ベルリンの壁の側にいた恋人達と言ってきたけど，本当はTony Viscontiと彼女がモデルだ。当時Tonyには妻がいたから（相手の）正体は明かせなかったけど，今ならもう大丈夫。（曲のモデルは）Tonyと彼がベルリン在住時に出会ったドイツ人の彼女。本人から許可も取ってある。多分当時彼は既に離婚寸前だったと思う。それに相手とは本気だったから感動した。これがきっかけでこの曲が誕生した。」

"I'm allowed to talk about it now. I wasn't at the time. I always said it was a couple of lovers by the Berlin Wall that prompted the idea. Actually, it was Tony Visconti and his girlfriend. Tony was married at the time. And I could never say who it was (laughs). But I can now say that the lovers were Tony and a German girl that he'd met whilst we were in Berlin. I did ask his permission if I could say that. I think possibly the marriage was in the last few months, and it was very touching because I could see that Tony was very much in love with this girl, and it was that relationship which sort of motivated the song."

この曲の背景については，当時BowieがレコーディングをしていたHansaスタジオの窓から見えた恋人達をモデルにしたという話が定説だったようですが，流石にマニアの世界は奥深い。ファンの声のなかに「自分はその同じスタジオにレコーディングに行ったけど，そこからベルリンの壁は見えない」というものがあって個人的に感動しました。こういう鋭い指摘は余程この曲に思い入れがないとできないからです。是非ともその方に直接お目にかかり，詳しくお話を伺いたいところです。

この曲より長いヴァージョンもあるのですが，ヴィデオが短い方を採用しているのでそちらに合わせました。

今まで手掛けたなかでも１・２を争う手強い歌詞でした。最初に聞いたのが昨年の7月で，それからすでにほぼ8か月が経過しました。もう覚えていませんが，こんな曲やらなきゃよかったと何度思ったことか。実際1度はお蔵入りしたのですが，その後考え直して今に至っています。（そうでなければこのリード文を読むことはなかったでしょう。）
この曲，聴いてみるとあの有名な曲が浮かびます：ひとつは"Let it Be" (The Beatles) でもうひとつが"A Whiter Shade Of Pale" (Procol Harum／邦題：青い影).

One of the toughest lyrics I've ever translated.  I first heard the song last July and almost 8 months have passed since then.  I don't remember how many times I wished I hadn't picked this up for my blog entry.  Actually, I dumped it once but had a second thought.  (Otherwise you'll never read this.)

Wikipediaによると，歌詞に登場するLast Postというのは，イギリス連邦諸国の軍隊において，戦没者の葬儀や記念式典で演奏される曲ということです。また，同じ行に登場するflagsですが，こちらは調べてみたものの，これといった回答が得られませんでした。もしご存じの方がおいでになったら，コメント欄等でお知らせくださればと思います。

（余談）

先日投稿したGabrielle AplinのSalvationと同様，イメージの羅列なので大変歌詞の内容が掴みにくい曲です。実は今も完全には理解できていない状況ですが，ここで無理に筋を通そうとすると，それはそれでまた別の問題が生じるような気がします。

さて，この曲，イントロからProcol HarumのA Whiter Shade Of Pale （青い影）を思い出します。ただ歌詞の内容は全く違います。あちらは酔っぱらって，そこにいた女性を口説こうとしたものの，あまりの下品さに相手に引かれた（だから顔面蒼白Whiter Shade of Paleらしい）という曲らしいです。・・・・どんなに哀愁漂う歌詞かと思ってたのに，知らなきゃ良かった。あれくらい曲調と内容がかけ離れてる曲もそうないですね。

Russians スティング (Sting)

以前の知り合いにソヴィエト時代に生れたロシア人がいました。彼女に出会う前まで，ハリウッド映画の影響を多大に受けたせいで（というよりおそらく正確には「洗脳」されたせいで）私にとってソビエトは，現在の北朝鮮のような「悪の帝国」だったのですが，彼女が聞かせてくれたソヴィエト時代の日常生活の話はまるで戦前の日本でした。当時ソヴィエトの人々はアメリカが攻めてくるのを大変怖れていて，どうにかしてそのＸデーに備えようと必死だったらしい。彼らの日常も日本人のそれと少しも違わない。仕事をして，勉強をして，子どもを可愛がる。違いなんかないと思いました。その時浮かんできたのがこの曲です。
I used to have a Russian friend who was born in her Soviet era.  Heavily bombarded (or practically brainwashed) with the Hollywood stereotype, I believed the country was an "Evil Empire" like current North Korea before I met her.  She told me her everyday life there in the period and what I heard from her sounded like ours before WWII.  People in the Soviet were so scared of being invaded by the US at that time and tried to prepare for the X-day.  Their lives weren't very different from ours.  They work, they study and they love their children.  There's no difference.  This was the song coming to my mind when I heard her story.

この曲の「本歌」はSergei ProkofievのLieutenant Kije//Romanceという曲です。

2010年World Entertainment New NetworkのインタヴューでStingは，衛星を使ってソヴィエトのＴＶを見たことがきっかけでこの曲を書いたと語っています：

大学に友人がいて，そいつがロシアのＴＶの衛星信号を盗んだ。よくビールを飲みながらこの小さな階段に腰掛けてロシアのＴＶを見てた・・・ある夜はセサミ・ストリートみたいな子ども番組しかやってなかったけど，その番組が子ども向けにきちんと作ってあることに感動した。今現在戦ってる相手（アルカイダ）には（こういう）同じ倫理観がないのが残念だ。

In his 2010 interview with World Entertainment News Network Sting admitted that the song was inspired by watching Soviet TV via satellite.

I had a friend at university who invented a way to steal the satellite signal from Russian TV. We'd have a few beers and climb this tiny staircase to watch Russian television... At that time of night we'd only get children's Russian television, like their 'Sesame Street'. I was impressed with the care and attention they gave to their children's programmes. I regret our current enemies haven't got the same ethics.

リード文で述べたような理由もあって，個人的にはこれが一番好きなStingの曲かもしれません。とにかく「Russians love their children, too」と聞いた時，いわば世界が180度ひっくりかえったような気がすると同時に，情報を鵜呑みにすることの恐ろしさも感じました。その意味で私にとってはepoch-makingな曲です。

ロマンティックな曲ではありませんが，ヴァレンタインデーに相応しい曲だと思ったので取り上げました。

Just Give Me A Reason ピンク (P!nk ft. Nate Ruess)

やっぱり彼の声には鉤爪がついています。YouTubeで見たヴィデオには，P!nk以外の名前が表記されていなかったのですが，今なら理由がわかります。不要だからです。曲の中で男性の声が聞こえてくるとすぐに誰が歌っているのかわかります。まあ少なくとも私はそうでしたし，当然のことながらそれで正解でした。
歌詞では男女間の食い違いを描いています。アメリカでは夫は常に妻に自分の愛情を伝えるべきで，それを怠ると離婚に発展する場合もあると聞いた時，そんなバカな，ギャグだろと思ったのですが，・・・大きな間違いでした。大真面目のようです。
I knew his voice does have a hook.  The video I saw on YouTube didn't have any other name credited except for P!nk herself.  Now I know why.  It's just unnecessary.  You can tell who's singing right after hearing the male voice in the song.  Well, at least I did and was right, of course.
The lyrics depict discrepancies between a man and a woman.  When I heard that a husband should keep expressing his love to his wife otherwise that could cost him his marriage in the US.  I thought it's ridiculous and must be some kind of joke.  No, I was dead wrong and they seem dead serious.

Don't let insecurity ruin your relationship 「心配し過ぎて相手との仲をダメにするなよ」と言ってやりたい気持ちですね。以前何かの本で，「こっちの服とこっちの服，どっちがいいと思う？」と聞かれた場合，「どっちでもいい」や「わからない」，「大して変わらない」などという答えはもってのほか，さらに自分がいいと思う方を言ってもダメで，正解は「どっちを着てもかわいいよ」であると読みました。

しかしそこまで読み込まなければならないとしたら，プロファイラー並みの洞察力を要求されるのではないでしょうか。いやそれが難なく出来るAdam Levine師匠とか，師匠とか，師匠とかの「選ばれし者」は別格として，一般人にはなかなかに難しいことに思えます。

私の周囲でこの手の質問をしてくるのは母ですが，私の場合，自分がいいと思った方を正直に言うと，なぜか「やっぱりそうよねえ」と納得してもらえます。・・・まあ母ですけどね。

Everybody Knows ジョン・レジェンド (John Legend)

「ああ・・・確かに」。John Legendが「だってみんな知ってることなんだ，本当は誰でも悩んでるんだって，好きな人と上手くやっていくためには，一体どうすればいいんだろう？そして別れることになった時，どうやって苦しい想いを消せばいいのか，みんなわからず悩んでる（Cause everybody knows, that nobody really knows how to make it work or how to ease the hurt）」と歌った時，思わずそうつぶやいてしまいました。ただ，この歌詞の中で私の心を打ったのはそこではありません。
それは「でも幸せにはなってほしい」という箇所にある「でも～には」という短いフレーズです。
例えば，本当に好きな相手と付き合っていたものの，次第にうまくいかなくなり，結局別れることになったとしましょう。この場合，相手を恨むことで忘れようとする人もいますが，逆に相手への思いを断ち切れぬまま，それでも相手の幸せを願おうとする人もいると思います。この「でも～には」には，後者のそういう切ない気持ちが込められています。
"Ah....so true..." I said to myself when I heard John Legend sing "'Cause everybody knows, that nobody really knows how to make it work or how to ease the hurt." It's not, however, the line I relate to most in this song.
Actually, it's a short phrase "I guess" in a line "I wish your best, I guess."
Suppose your relationship with someone who you really love turns sour and the person moves on after the breakup.  Some of you may try to let it out by hating the person.
Some of you, on the other hand, miss the person very much but still try to wish the best for the person.  The part, "I guess" represents such a bitter-sweet feeling of a breakup.

（余談）

連休明けのしかもヴァレンタインデーを前に「振られ男の恨み節」でもなかろうよと思わないでもないのですが，リード文でも述べた「I guess」にやられました。昨年末に投稿したミダス王のWhen I Was Your Manといい，どうやらこういう「切ないやせ我慢」系の曲に弱いようです。

このI guess，単独で日本語にするとしたら「多分」ですが，確信の度合いという意味でProbablyよりもかなり低い感じがします。おそらくmaybeよりも低い。（なにしろ「純国産」なので間違っていたら訂正をお願いします）。日本語で言うところの「微妙」に違い感じもします。
