Hunting the Wren ランクム (Lankum)

この曲に登場する「wren（ミソサザイ）」は，小型で茶褐色の羽毛を持スズメ目の鳥と，19世紀に一般社会の外側で生きていた女性の一団の双方を指しています。
The wren in this song refers to a family of small brown passerine birds and a group of women who dropped out of the society of 19th century.

** Donnelly's hollow　・・・　アイルランドにある石碑。１815年アイルランド人ボクサーDan Donnelly（グローブはなし）がイギリス人チャンピオンGeorge Cooperを相手に素手で戦い，死闘の末に１１ラウンドで相手を倒したことを記念している碑のある窪地。

（余談）

「Wren of the Curragh」と呼ばれたグループの所属していた女性には，性的サービスを提供する者，未婚の母，従来の考え方に迎合しない者，定住地を持たない放浪者，前科者，季節労働者などが含まれていたようですが，これが当時から２５０年が経った今であっても，こういった女性の社会的立場はさほど変わっていないのではないでしょうか？
