英語には他動詞と自動詞があると知ったのは高校生の時でした。前者の他動詞 (vi.)はその行為を目的語が受ける場合に使うのに対して，後者の他動詞 (vr.)はその行為を受ける目的語が存在しない場合に使いますが，大部分の動詞にはそのどちらの意味もあります。

（余談）

リードで自動詞と他動詞の話をしたのは，タイトルでbreakが自動詞として使われているからです。歌詞では「you/he/she broke my heart」という他動詞形で目にすることが多いこのbreakですが，それを「nothing breaks like a heart」と敢えて自動詞にしたことによって，この別れが誰のせいでもないと考える主人公の気持ちが表現されているように思われます。
