リミックスには発表当時さほど話題にならなかった原曲を世に知らしめるという役割があるように思います。私の場合，原曲が誰かの死を悼んでいるように思える一方，リミックスの方は（何故か）破局ソングに聞こえます。
I think a great remix often serves as a tool to bring the original song which was little known to the world when they're released to a wider audience.  While the narrator in the original by Antony and The Johnsons sounds like mourning someone , the remix by Avicii somehow sounds more like a breakup song to me.

（余談）

この原曲，タイトルを見た時に連想したのは「千の風になって」でしたが，実際に聞き始めて感じたのは「もののけ姫」でした。
