優れたメタファーというのは一体どういうものなのでしょうか？私は誰でも知っていて，特定のものと結び付けやすいもの，希望や愛を表す光や夜明け，絶望や苦境を表す暗闇や夜などが優れたメタファーになると考えています。
したがって，一部の人しか知らないようなものをメタファーにするのは難しいでしょう。例えば，一部の人にとってプログラミング言語のPerlは，自分の言いたいことをすぐにわかってくれる相手を表す絶好のメタファーかもしれませんが，他の人間にとってはそうとは言えません。
What makes a good metaphor?  I think it should be something everybody knows and can easily associate it with a certain thing, such as light and dawn, or darkness and night representing hope/love and despair/hard times respectively .
 It's hard to make a thing which only a limited number of people know about a metaphor isn't easy.  For example, to some people, Perl, a programming language would be a perfect metaphor for a significant other who instantly understands what they want but to others it's not.

（余談）

季節による変動はあるものの，我々が暮らすこの世界では，昼と夜は同じように訪れるものであり，それゆえdark timesが「失意の時」を表すメタファーとして成立するのだと思われます。

仮にこれが1000年に一度しか朝が来ない，基本的に暗闇の世界であったとすれば，dark timesはおそらく「日常」というほどの意味しか持たないような気がしますし，逆に1000年に一度しか「夜」が来ない世界では，dark timesは我々の想像するアルマゲドン的な意味になってしまうのかもしれません。
