Better Man パール・ジャム (Pearl Jam)

James Morrisonのファンなので，Songfacts.comでこのBetter Manというタイトルを見た時には彼の曲だと思ったのですが，実際にはあちらのBetter Manではなく，Pearl Jamの曲でした。この曲はEddie VedderがPeral Jamに加入する前に作った曲で，彼の母親と彼女が再婚した義理の父親について書かれているそうです。
As a big fan of James Morrison, what I thought of was his Better Man when I spotted the title on Songfacts.com.  This is not, however, that Better Man.  This is one by Pearl Jam written by Eddie Vedder before he joined the band.  He said it's about his mother and his stepfather she's married to.

（余談）

歌詞の後半部分で主人公は「世話だって焼いてやらなきゃならなくてそれでまた戻ってしまう (She feeds him, yeah, That's why she'll be back again)」ことになっていますが，実際には彼女をfeedsしているのは彼の方なのでしょう。

恋愛も薬物やアルコールと同様に依存の一種というのが私の持論ですが，この曲はまさにその典型であり，「あいつ」が薬物やアルコールのことだと考えてもこの曲はそれなりに筋が通ってしまいます。

それはともかく，Eddie Vedderはこの曲をコンサートで何度か義理の父親に捧げているそうですが，仮に私がその父親の立場だったら心中は複雑だと思いますね。
