Gordon Lightfootはこの曲は自身の結婚生活が上手くいかなくなったことで思いついたと語っています。70年代の曲によくあることですが，現在の曲に比べて当時の曲はヴァースに重点が置かれています。この曲もヴァース（連）が４つあるだけでコーラスもブリッジもありません。歌というよりも詩のようなものだと思います。
The singer Gordon Lightfoot once explained that he's inspired to write this song by his failing relationship.  As is often the case with many songs of '70s, they put more emphasis on verses compared with those in these days.  This song comprises of four verses.  No chorus and no bridge.  I think it's more of a poem than a song.

1987年にLightfootは，Witney Houstonの「The Greatest Love of All」が彼のこの曲の24小節分を盗作したという訴えを起こしましたが，そうすることで作曲者ではなく彼女の評判に傷がつくという理由で訴えを取り下げました。
