（余談）

「俺がここで待ってても，迷惑がったりしないでくれよ，この場所で待ってても，お前は許してくれるだろ？(Hope you don't mind I waited, Would you mind if I wait right here?)」と相手に尋ねる主人公ですが，普通に考えれば間違いなくイヤだと思います。ことによれば警察を呼ばれるレベルです。

それはともかく，私の中ではUsher = エロという図式がガッチリ出来上がっていたので，今回歌詞を見た時には意表を突かれました。しかもその図式がなかなかに手強く，そのためにいわば「逆オオカミ少年」状態に陥ってしまい，和訳しながら「一見普通の表現だがひょっとすると裏に途轍もないエロい意味のあるスラングではないのか？」という思いが常に頭の片隅を離れず，無駄に疲れてしまいました。

Usherには芸風の統一をお願いしたいところです。

Wikipediaによると「ミュージック・ヴィデオあるいはソング・ヴィデオと呼ばれるものは，曲と映像を組み合わせることで，その曲の売り上げを伸ばしたり，その曲の芸術性を高める目的で制作される」ということらしい。David Guettaのようにあまり自分のミュージック・ヴィデオに登場しないアーティストもいる一方で，逆に出るのが当たり前で，自分が参加した曲のミュージック・ヴィデオにさえほぼ必ず登場するアーティストもいます。私の知る限り，（フィーチャリングされていながら）Usherが出てこないミュージック・ヴィデオはこれが初めてです。
Wikipedia says, "a music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes."  While some artists like David Guetta don't appear in his music video very often, some never fail to do so.  They often appear in the music video of a song in which they're featured.  As far as I know, this is the only video that I can find in which Usher doesn't appear despite his credit.

Usherらしからぬ「健全な」歌詞ですが，ひょっとすると，私の気づかない「なにか」が隠れているのかもしれません。そして仮にそうだとすると，「達人」への道はまだまだ遠そうです。（とはいうものの，達人になっていいかどうかは別の問題です。）

芸風に変化がありましたか？私にとってUsherという単語は「セックスの曲」や「裏の意味」と同義語なので，この曲のタイトルに「featuring Usher」とあるのを見て，もっと「官能的な」歌詞を予想していたのですが，意外なことに予想ほどいやらしくないのに驚きました。
Did he changed the style?  To me the name 'Usher' is a synonym for a song about sex and innuendos.  So when I saw the title saying "featuring Usher", I expected something much more sensual.  I was pretty surprised to find that this song didn't sound very suggestive.

これ以上ないほど追い込まれているこの主人公ですが，別にUsher本人の体験に基づいているわけではなく，プロデューサーのJermaine Dupriの実体験をヒントにして出来ているようです。同様の曲にはかのMichael JacksonのBillie Jeanがありますが，以前取り上げたBen FoldsのBrickなども広い意味でこの曲と同じベクトル上にあるように思われます。

Confessions アッシャー (Usher)

ご存知の方もいらっしゃると思いますがこの曲には続編があります。この曲の中で，主人公は相手（おそらく恋人か妻）に対して，街を離れていた時に本当は自分が何をしていたかを告白し，心から謝罪しています。それだけにこの曲を聞いていると，相手も主人公を許しそれから末永く幸せに暮らしたと思ってしまうのですが，実際の展開はそうではありません。
As some of you know, this song has a sequel.  In this song the narrator is offering his heart-felt apology to the second person, probably his girlfriend or wife, confessing what he actually did while he's out of town.  Listening to it, we listeners expect that the second person would forgive him for what he did and they would live happily ever after but that's not what comes next,

U Got It Bad アッシャー (Usher)

英語の二人称youには単数と複数があり，それが単数の相手を指すのか，あるいは複数（2人以上）の相手を指すのかを文法的に見極めるのはそれほど容易ではありませんが，「When you say that you love 'em（自分の気持ちを伝えたら）」この部分の歌詞に登場するyou（自分）（おそらく聴き手）は複数だと思っています。最後が「love 'em (=love them)」で終わるからです。
An English pronoun 'you' represents both the second person singular and the second person plural.  Grammatically speaking, it's not very easy to determine 'you' refers to a single person or more unless words like 'guys' and 'people' follow it.  I'm pretty sure, however, the word in a line, "When you say that you love 'em" in the lyrics represents more than one person (probably the audience) because it ends with "love 'em (love them).

間違いありません。かのAustin Powersが「おイタはダメよ」と言うのが聞えました。おそらく今まで取り上げたなかでも最も手強い歌詞のひとつではないでしょうか。いやメタファーまみれだとか，解釈がはっきり定まらないというような理由ではありません。エロいんです。別に歌詞の内容がわからないわけではありません。わかりますとも。ただ実生活では「ことチュン」（用語集をご覧ください）なので，数年前の自分なら気が遠くなる作業だったと思います。しかし「習うより慣れろ」とよく言われます。確かにそうでした。
I swear I heard Austin Powers said, "OH, behave."  Probably this is one of the toughest lyrics I've ever translated.  Not because it's too metaphoric or too open to interpretation but it's too dirty.  I'm not saying I don't understand what the lyrics are saying.  Oh yes, I do.  Being pretty shy in real life, however, putting these lines in Japanese would have been a daunting task for me few years ago.  However, "Practice makes perfect." they say.  Yeah, it surely did.

いかがでしょうか？まず先に申し上げておきますが，この主人公，大人のくせに大変好き嫌いが多く，あれはイヤこれもイヤと金があるのをいいことにワガママ放題。特に牛肉と卵が苦手。

そこに登場するのが，カリスマ食事療法士の称号をほしいままにする彼女です。その前に相手の彼女がステーキと卵料理を作っていることからも明らかなように，ここは，彼女がこれを機に主人公の好き嫌いを直そうとしている場面です。

①の前半部分が描き出しているのは，彼女がいわば「好き嫌いを直すプロ」であり，彼女にかかれば大抵の人間は（本人の知らぬ間に）好き嫌いが直ってしまうという点です。

これに対して②の後半部分では，彼女がまるで子どもに食べさせるように（フライパンから）取り出した食べ物を主人公の目の前に差し出し「はい，アーン」とやる様子を描いております。この熟練のテクで，さしもの主人公もうっかり口を開き，苦手なはずのステーキや卵料理を口にしてしまうというわけです。

それにしても，彼の曲を取り上げるたびに何故か毎回「ハードルが上がる」ような気がするのは何故なんでしょうか。この調子で続けられたら，この主人公ならずとも「たまらずギブアップしたくなる（wanna tap out and retire）」と思います。ああ・・・あのitさえなかったら・・・。

There Goes My Baby アッシャー (Usher)

インターネット上，特に米国で，使われ過ぎている形容詞のひとつがawesome（すげえ）でしょう。時にはかなりいい加減な使われ方をされていて，そのために，Urban Dictionary では「アメリカ人はなんでもこれ（awesome）と表現する」「アメリカ人がボキャブラリのなさを補うために使う絆創膏みたいな言葉」などと定義されています。
個人的にはこういう理由で，どちらかというとcoolやamazing（これもかなり使われていますが）の方を使っているのですが・・・ウソは申しません。このカヴァーは本当にAWESOMEです。

この曲のLike waterfalls your hair falls down to your waistの箇所ですが，この歌詞を書いたRico Loveによると，これは1994年のTLCのヒット曲Waterfallsを踏まえたものなんだとか。「Usherの元彼女のRozonda Thomas (TLCのChilli) はお似合いだと思っていたから，なにかのキッカケにと思って」そうしたそうです。

カヴァーの素晴らしさにうっかり騙されて取り上げてみたものの，やはりUsherでした。最初のダンジョン（＝連）こそ問題なく通過したものの，次のダンジョンで早速ボスキャラ級の敵（twerk）が登場しました。

違います！喫煙しても寿命は延びませんし逆効果です。肺のテストももうさんざんやっているでしょうから，これ以上テストする必要はないはずです。
それはともかく，この点については賛成できないものの，賛成できる点もないわけではありません。例えば「大体人生に意味なんてないだろ？ドキドキもワクワクもない平凡な毎日なら」の部分。至言です。
何かを始める時「こんなことしたら周囲からバカでどうかしてると思われるんじゃなかろうか」などと考え，ちょっとしたことでやる気が失せたり，すぐに諦めてしまうことが少なくありません。確かにそうかもしれませんが，人生は一度しかありませんし，この人生は周囲の人達の人生でもありません。自分の人生です。James Morrisonもこう言っています「人生は一度きり，だから思ったように生きていけ」。

Ludacrisを知ったのは，何を隠そうあのJustin BieberのBabyでした。彼(Ludacris)のラップがカッコよくて覚えようとしたのですが，なにしろあまりに早すぎて覚えきれませんでした。

さて歌詞の中で墓碑銘の話が出てきます。元の英語歌詞は「Woman, weed and alcohol」で「女とマリファナとアルコール」としましたが，これだと大変「ロケンロール」な感じがするのに，これが「女と煙草と酒」（←意味はほぼ同じです）だと，いきなり昭和演歌の世界が広がるような気がするのは私だけでしょうか？

ところで，音楽の世界で悪癖と言えば「ドラッグ」を抜きには語れません。子どもの頃は「覚醒剤」という名称を聞くたびに「カクセーザイ」という外来語かと思っていたのですが，あれは「覚醒（意識がはっきりする）」するクスリだったわけですね。

したがってその意味で言えば，この世の中には全く合法的な「カクセーザイ」も多数存在するわけです。デス・メタル好きの友人はチルドレン・オブ・ボドム(Children of Bodom)（略してチル・ボド）の曲を聴いて目を覚まし仕事に行くと言っているので，彼にとってはチル・ボドがカクセーザイと言えましょう。

また私の妹は「イケメン」という単語を聴くと，どれほど上の空で会話を聞いていても，一瞬にして居住まいを正して身を乗り出すという体質の持ち主なので，彼女にとってはイケメンがカクセーザイと言えるのかもしれません。・・・・まあ確かに中毒性はありますけどね。

Burn アッシャー (Usher)

この曲のストーリーは，GotyeのSomebody That I Used To Knowのそれとほぼ同じ。ある男性がなにかのきっかけで自分に自信を持ってしまい，そのせいで当時付き合っていた彼女が物足りなく思えて別れてしまった。しかし後になってそれが勘違いだったと気づき，どうにかして縒りを戻そうと必死にやってみるも後の祭りで激しく後悔するという話だと思われます。同じでしょう？
それはともかく，この曲でUsherの曲の中にもエロくないものはあるのだなということがわかりました。よく「人を見た目で判断するな」と言われますが，全くもって仰る通りです。
The underlying story of the song is almost identical with that of Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know.  A guy who's somewhat convinced that he's too good for his girl breaks up with her and later find out that's not true.  He desperately tries to take her back but he is not be so successful and regrets greatly.  See?
Anyway, now I know all that Usher sings are not too sexy.  They say you cannot judge a book by its cover.  Totally.

（余談）

よくある話じゃないでしょうか。元彼女との復縁を切に願う主人公ですが，ただ彼，仮に彼女と縒りが戻ったとしてもまたいずれ別れます。

私見ですが，これはおそらくアレじゃないでしょうか。「限定〇食」とかいうアレ。最初にそれを勧められたものの，その時はさして魅力的にも思えず，別にいいやと思って別の品を注文。

ところが，後から来る客がみなそれを注文している。心の中で自分が注文した料理でいいんだとは思うものの，やはり気にかかる。ええいそっちも頼んでしまえと決心し，注文を告げるも「申し訳ありません。さっき最後の1食が出ちゃいまして」と断られた上，今日で今年分のその料理は終わりだと告げられる・・・・。こみあげる「やってもた」感。

・・・その悔しさを噛みしめながら待つこと1年。その間似た料理を見るたびに「あの時何故注文しなかったんだろう」と後悔の念にかられる。しかも何故か周囲から「あれは美味しかった」などという声ばかりが聞こえてくる。

そして遂にやってくるリベンジの日。期待に胸を膨らませて注文し，早速食べてみるも，期待ほどではない。自分の直感は正しかったと納得する一方で，抑えきれず湧き上がる「何やってたんだろ，この1年」的挫折感。

妹曰く，Dancing Queenの余談( http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/02/dancing-queen-abba.html )を読んで翌日の投稿はUsherの曲（具体的に言うと「エロい曲」）だと確信したとか。残念ですが，我が妹でありながら，どうもヤツは私に対して変な思い込みがあるようです。彼女が言うには，自分と同様に考えている人が必ずいるはずであるからUsherの曲をすべきなんだとか。そうなんですか？私にはわかりません。それはともかく，このヴィデオのダンスが素晴らしく一見の価値があると思うので投稿しました。（無論，曲も好きですよ）。

My sister told me that after reading the parentheses of "Dancing Queen"(http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/02/dancing-queen-abba.html), she was convinced the entry for the next day would be one of Usher's song. specifically a "a bit too sexy" one.  I'm afraid I should say that being my sister, she was too prejudiced to understand me.  She insisted that I should post one of his songs saying some people must have thought as she did.  Was she right?  Well, I don't know.  Anyway, I post this song because I find his dance in the music video is awesome and worth watching.  （Oh I love the music, of course.)

* ギャグのオチを解説するのくらい空しいものもないのですが，最初の方で「話のオチはしっかり受け止めろよ」と言われているので，一応解説させていただきます。

「酷い目に遭わされた」たとえとして，ドレッド・ヘアを引き合いに出していますが，ご覧いただくとわかるように，ラップを担当しているPitbullはスキンヘッドです。

** この部分，Mr. Worldwideは彼のミックス・テープの題名らしい。ただ私見ですがこのMr. Worldwideの部分には，「相手の女性の国籍は問わない」という意味もあると睨んでおります。ええ邪心持ちの誹りは甘受いたしますとも。

（余談）

いやその発想はなかったですね。実はこの曲に関して，海外の歌詞サイトに投稿されていた解釈のなかで，ひときわ目を引いたものがありました。よく言えば斬新，有体に言えば深読みしすぎだと思われるもので，一言で言えば，世紀末的世界における戦争の残酷さと司法省による権力の濫用について歌った曲なんだとか。・・・・ええ？そうですか？

このいわば「陰謀説」によれば，DJはThe Department of Justice（司法省）の略，クラブはdeath camp（死の収容所），そこでは主人公（Usher）は自分の意思で恋愛することはかなわず，権力側が女性を与える。ために「自分の身体を自分で自由に出来ない（No control of my body）」状態になるらしい。

これ以外の点についても詳細に説明してあるのですが，いちいち和訳するのが面倒なので，一番下に転載しておきました。英語ですが，興味のある方はお読みください。

ただこれだけは断言できることが一つあります。これを書いた人物は１０代男子です。日本で言うなら中学生か高校生あたり。ええ間違いありません。ソースは・・・ヒミツです。

それはともかく，そこまで深く読み込まないとわからないのでは，そもそもダンス・ミュージックの曲にして発表する意味があまりないような気がするのですが，皆様はどうお考えでしょうか？

This song is a horrific portrayal of the atrocities of war in a post-apocalyptic setting, and a critique of the abuses of power the Department of Justice is granted in America. It is quite a clever song, he is a master of the metaphor, which adds to its rich verbal depictions.

In the beginning, Usher is walking into the "club," which is a euphemism for a death camp. You can tell that there has already been a massive amount of murder that has taken place, so much in fact that the slightest movement causes the bodies he walks on to gently rock from side to side. He is thankful that another week has passed, even if he's not sure why, because he feels like a zombie only brought back to life by occasional moments of unspeakable terror.

Suddenly, a guard yells, "HANDS UP!" and every prisoner fearfully complies. Usher has no control over his body, they have taken even that from him. He seems to recognize the guard by his eyes, he is likely a former friend who is now on the other side. Suddenly, he is marched into the forced copulation room, where the Department of Justice (D.J.) has forced him to breed with a selected female. The guard taunts him, telling him to do the forbidden "dance" like it's the last night of his life, which he knows it well may be.

Usher briefly dreams of revenge as he is allowed his one drink of the day. He dreams of setting the camp on fire, even using the term "mother fucker" to describe it, a brilliant metaphor as the camp has never physically touched his mother. When the "music" (brilliant, again) of the surrounding stops, he is once more forced to put his hands up while the guard frisks him for any food or water he may be trying to feebly hold onto. Once again, he swears revenge to "get the guard right" while cursing the Department of Justice for making a mockery of love.

Pitbull then gives his account of what the death camps are like for Latin American citizens. You can see that because he is more familiar with these nation's histories of social and political turmoil, he pays little attention to the physical suffering around him, instead preferring to think of his now deceased wife, and how they used to fornicate while playing music loudly in his parent's basement, though he is sorry for her passing.

He tries to yell at Tyrone, the guard, screaming and "hollering" out in rage, telling him he could easily jump through these "foot hoops" that he is chained in. Instead, Tyrone informs him that the chains are intentionally left loose as a sign of false hope, telling him that the new world order is "global." Dispirited, Pitbull then recalls an earlier conversation he had with his wife in Spanish, when he joked about being her OBGYN.

In the end, the two simply remind the listeners of the abuses of power that may be allowed by the Department of Justice if nobody takes action to limit them. They will force people to constantly live every night like it is their last, cursing the D.J. that they will some day get what they deserve, and, with the final line of the song, sarcastically thanking them for all that they've done to these poor two men.

題名を耳にした時，私を含めた邪心持ちの方は，これもまたUsherお得意の曲だとお考えになったでしょう。私自身はそれを否定しませんが，Usherはこの曲は恋愛関係を歌ったものであってセックスを歌ったものではないと説明しております。が，人間は必ずしも常に真実を語るわけではありません。我が師匠のAdam LevineもThe Man Who Never Liedで「なんでも正直に言えばいいってもんじゃない，知りたくないことだってあるだろ？」と歌っております。ですからご存分に妄想なさってください。
I'm sure that when you hear the song title, "Climax", those who are dirty-minded like me may think this is just another song of his.  I don't deny it but Usher himself explained that the song is about a relationship and not even about sex.  However, we don't always tell the truth, don't we?  As Adam Levine sings in his "The Man Who Never Lied" which I posted few days ago, "Sometimes honesty is the worst policy."  So go fantasize.

この曲，2012年2月14日のヴァレンタイン・デイに，ファンに向けたプレゼントとしてTwitter経由でリリースされたそうで，今年2013年のグラミー賞R&B部門にノミネートされています。またTime誌の2012年のベスト・ソングの1位にも選ばれたとか。（因みに2位はPSYのGuangnam Styleらしい）。

（余談）

それにしてもこの曲，リード文で述べたようにUsherは言っていますが，個人的には全く信じておりません。「ウソ」です。あまりに出来過ぎてます。間違いなく「狙って」います。仮にこれがJames MorrisonやColdplayの曲であったなら，私も己の邪心を恥じるところですが，なにしろあのUsherですから。
