友達とカフェやレストランにいるとしましょう。流行っている店で周りには多くのお客さんがいます。本来ならうるさすぎて友達の話が聞こえなくなるはずですがそうはなりません。これが選択的注意というものです。
You're in a restaurant or cafe with your friends.  It's a pretty busy place and there are so many people around you.  It should be too noisy for you to listen to what your friends are talking but you have no difficulty in doing so.  That's how the selective attention works.

（余談）

リードで述べたように「選択的注意」が働くと，関係のない情報を排除して必要な情報だけに集中することができますが，その一方で「選択的注意」が働き過ぎると，普通であれば入ってくる情報も入らなくなってしまいます。

人生の悪い面にばかり注目していると，この主人公のように上を向けばそこに美しい虹が出ているにもかかわらず，それがわからないまま無駄に悩み苦しむことになりかねません。

時には立ち止まって上を見ることも必要なのかもしれません。
