John Newtonという名前は知らなかったものの，これほどの美しい曲を書く人は高潔な人物に違いないという私の思い込みとは裏腹に，実際のJohn Newtonは元は海軍の船乗りで後に奴隷貿易に手を染めた人物でした。彼は1748年にひどい嵐から生還した際にこの曲の第一連を書いたそうですが，その話を聞いて「神の怒り」という言葉が頭に浮かんだのは私だけではないと思います。
The lyrics of this song were written by an English poet and clergyman John Newton as a poem and no music was accompanied before 1835.
I have never head of his name but I somehow believed that a person who wrote such a beautiful song must have been a man of integrity. Actually John Newton was not. He was a navy seaman before got involved in slave trade. He wrote the verse after he survived a terrible storm in 1748. Am I the only one who got 'the wrath of God' in mind?

なんていい響きだろう
それがあるから自分みたいな
人でなしでも救われる
堕落したこともあるけど

同時にそれがあったから
不安からも救われた

この曲の最後の連はJohn Newtonが書いたわけではなく19世紀初頭に匿名で付け加えられたそうです。
それはともかく，ここまで悔い改めたような歌詞を書いておきながら，John Newtonはその後もしばらく奴隷貿易に手を染めていたんだとか。彼が一体どういうつもりでそういう生活を続けていたのかは他人にはわかりませんが，実入りのよくない仕事でなかったことだけは間違いなさそうです。
