（余談）

1066年にイングランドを占領したかのノルマンディー公ギョーム（のちのウィリアム一世・ウィリアム征服王）は，船から降りて敵地のイングランド南岸に攻め込む際，勢い余って海岸の砂に足を取られ，そのままそこに倒れ込んでしまったそうです。

通常なら不運の兆しと取られかねないこのアクシデントですが，そこはさすがに征服王，地面の砂をしっかり掴んで立ち上がり「私はすでにこの大地を手にした！」と周囲に誇示して兵の士気を挙げたんだとか。

無論その辺りの因果関係はいまだ定かではありませんが，その後彼はヘイスティングスの戦いで時のイングランド王ハロルド２世に勝利し，イングランド国王となって結果的に「この大地を手にした」わけですから，物は言いよう気は持ちようとはまさにこのこと。

まさに「人生これで終わりじゃない」ですね。
