Many people think this song is about a romantic relationship. I think it can be applied to other kind of relationships such as one between a boss and their workers and a parent and their child. It's also true to a relationship between a stalker and their victim. In this case the narrator is a stalker, of course.

（余談）
「こんなに頑張ってしてやったのに」と嘆く主人公ですが，実際には相手にとってそれがさほど有難くなかったということも珍しくありません。特にリードで述べたストーカーと被害者の例などまさにそれでしょう。
仮にそうだとすれば，何かをする際には相手に懇願されて初めて行動に出る方が得策であるようにも思われるのですが，その戦略を取ったら取ったで「気が利かない」「空気を読めない」と言われかねない点が難しいところでしょう。
