どこかへ行きたいと思うなら，列車でもバスでも（勿論飛行機でも）移動手段はいくらでもあるはずなのに，何故主人公の２人は真夜中発の列車を選んだのでしょうか？値段が安かった？そうかもしれません。あるいは目的地に一番早く着けるのがその列車だったのかもしれません。それも考えられます。ただ私は彼らがこの列車を選んだのは，一刻も早くそこを離れたかったからではないかと思っています。
There are a lot of trains and buses (and planes, of course) we can take when we wan to go somewhere.  So why do the narrators take a midnight train?  It costs less.  Maybe.  It's the fastest way to arrive the destination.  It makes sense.  I think they choose the train just because they want to leave as soon as possible.

（余談）

この曲は音楽や映画の世界で成功することを夢見てロサンザルスに出てきたものの，夢破れた人々に向けた曲なんだとか。確かにそうであるとすれば，主人公２人が乗るのは，やはり普通の列車ではなく「真夜中に駅を出る（ジョージア行きの）列車」でなければいけないような気がします。
