To me the title 'silver lady' conjures up an image of a woman in her sixties or seventies with rich gray hair. Taking a look at the lyrics, you see that's not what the song's about. Some people say in the song David Soul's talking to his wife who gets tired of his being alcoholic. I'm not sure about it, though.

70年代イギリス北部の地域では，それまで地域を支えていた炭鉱，造船、繊維などといった産業に陰りが見え始め，生活が苦しくなった労働者がアメリカにおける黒人の状況のなかに自らのそれを見たたため，当時アメリカで流行していたソウルやR&Bがイギリス北部で爆発的に広まったんだとか。
この曲はイギリスで大ヒットしたそうですが，その背景にはこういう事情があったのかもしれません。
