自分に自信があれば脅かされているとは感じにくいものですが，不安にかられていると，周りに怯えることも少なくありません。この主人公の場合も，元カノと電話で話している相手に対して「どうすんの？」と繰り返し聞き続けています。
If you're confident and have a faith in yourself, you're not easily threatened.  If you're insecure, however, you'd feel threatened of others quite often.  The narrator keeps asking the second person what they're gonna do, watching they're talking their ex. on the phone.
