タイトルからもわかるようにMaren Morrisはこの曲の中に木に関連するメタファーを散りばめており，例えば主人公は，大きな古い木すなわち家族の影に隠れている若木に自分をたとえています。
As the title implies, Maren Morris sprinkles tree related metaphors into the song.  For example, the narrator depicts themselves as a young tree which is growing under the shadow of the big old one representing their family.

（余談）

一般的には「愛情」「支え」「保護」などのポジティヴな意味あいで語られる「家族」ですが，そうでない場合も決して少なくないことは，児童虐待や家庭内暴力のニュースを聞いても容易に察せられます。

この主人公と家族の関係が具体的にどんなものだったのかは不明ですが，親木のすぐ近くに落ちた種から芽を出した若木がほとんどの場合数年以内に枯れてしまう点，英語で家系図のことを「family tree」という点などを考え併せると，タイトルの「the tree」は実に優れたメタファーであると思われます。
