This Gift 98ディグリーズ (98 Degrees)

Metrolyricsが選ぶ「もっと評価されるべきクリスマスソング」（The Most Underrated Christmas Songs）のトップが彼らのThis Giftでした。その時はこの曲のことも彼ら（98 Degrees）のことも知らなかったのですが，下のヴィデオを見て，その選択に納得したところです。ここで取り上げる大方のクリスマス・ソングは，クリスマスをちょっと斜めに見たものだったり，悲しい感じのものだったりするのですが，そういった曲とは違い，これはシンプルかつロマンティックなラヴ・ソングです。リラックスして彼らの美しいハーモニーをお楽しみください。
Metrolyrics picked their The Gift as the top of The Most Underrated Christmas Songs.  I didn't know either of the song or the band, 98 Degrees at that time but after watching the video below, I was convinced they're right.  Unlike other Christmas songs I usually pick up here which are often a bit sarcastic or sad, it's a simple and romantic love song.  So just lean back and relax.  Enjoy their beautiful harmony.

（余談）

歌詞に登場するI'm down on my knees（だから今ここで跪づくよ）という箇所ですが，これは何も主人公がここで「神に祈る」わけでも，いわんや「正座をする」わけでもありません。（跪いて）恋人の彼女（彼かもしれませんが）にプロポーズするつもりです。

したがって，タイトルのThis Giftはおそらく「婚約指輪」だと思われますが，歌詞の中に「お金じゃ絶対買えないものが，心の中にあるってことに」と出てくるため，その点を考慮すれば，いわゆる「愛」ということになるのかもしれません。

まさか，お約束の「アタシがプレゼントよ♪」よろしく「主人公自身がプレゼント」という線はないと思いたいのですが，こればかりはわかりません。とにかくそうでないことを祈るばかりです。

それにしても，まだ本館を始めて日も浅かった２年前，James BluntのGoodbye My Loverに，同じ表現が出てきたのですが，当時は何故突然主人公が「跪（ひざまづ）く」のかがなかなか理解できず，大変に苦労しました。あれから２年・・・私も大人になりました。
