The Great Pretender ザ・プラターズ (The Platters / Freddie Mercury)

カヴァーがオリジナルを凌ぐ場合があります。正確に言えばオリジナルを再定義してしまう場合です。Freddie Mercuryがこの曲をカヴァーしていますが，タイトルを知らなければそれがカヴァーだとは気付かなかったでしょう。歌詞のメッセージに反してオリジナルはかなり楽天的でのんきな感じがするのですが，これに対してFreddie Mercuryのカヴァーは，彼のセクシャリティとも相まって，まるで告白のように思えます。
Sometimes a cover outshines the original.  More precisely it redefines the original.  Freddie Mercury covered this song.  I wouldn't have recognized it as a cover if I had not known the titles.  He owned it.  Despite the message the song delivers, the original sounds pretty optimistic and happy-go-lucky, focusing less on it.  On the other hand, considering his sexuality, the cover sounds like a confession.

（余談）

「大嘘つき(the great pretender)」であることを嘆く主人公ですが，それが乳児でない限り，人間社会で生きていく以上，どんな人間であれ多かれ少なかれ「大嘘つき」であるのが当然でしょう。そもそも自分の感情を純度100％で放出していては，当人は勿論のこと周囲にいる人間もたまったものではありません。お互いに大変な目に遭ってしまいます。
