日本はかなり均質的な社会ですが，そのような社会においても，我々はみな社会階層やデモグラフィーの透明な層で隔てられていると感じることがあります。我々が日常生活で出会う人々は大抵自分と同じ世界の人間でそうでない場合は稀ですが，時としてそれが問題になることがあります。例えば「アップグレード」して上の層やデモグラフィーに入ってしまうと，それまで上手くやれていた周囲の人と合わなくなっていることに気付いたりします。
Sometimes I feel that even in a pretty homogenous society like Japan, we're all separated by transparent layers of social class or demography.  People we interact with in our daily lives are usually those who belong to the same demography as we do.  Otherwise would be rare.  That sometimes causes a trouble.  When you move up to a different layer or demography of the society, by 'upgrading' yourself,  you'd often find yourself uncomfortable with those people around you who you used to get along with.

（余談）

「自分の常識と世間の常識は同じではない」と言う言葉を聞いたことがありますが，リードで述べたように，日常生活で出会うほとんどの人間が自分と同じ世界の人間であるとすると，自分の常識が世間の常識だと考えてしまうのも無理からぬことでしょう。

ただ世界の政治的・宗教的対立を見ていると「自分の常識＝世間の常識」と考えてしまうことこそが世の中の紛争の根本原因のかなりの部分を占めているようにも思われます。
