「お互い自分の言い分を，通そうとしているうちに，言いたいことがズレてって，合わなくなっていくんだよ(We follow the lines 'til they get twisted out of place.)」という一節には大変覚えがあります。他人と議論すると，ともすれば相手を論破することに気持ちが向きすぎて，自分の言いたいことの趣旨がズレてしまうことがあるからです。さんざん口喧嘩した挙句，実は相手と同じことを言っていたと気づくことも珍しくありません。
"We follow the lines 'til they get twisted out of place" sounds very familiar to me.  When we argue with others, we often focus so much on tearing down their argument that we miss the point of our argument.  It's not very rare that we find what we're insisting is practically the same as what they're doing after a fierce quarrel.

（余談）

歌詞にlines, side, war, fight for, battle linesなどの言葉が登場することからみて，おそらくこの曲のメタファーのテーマは「戦争」であり，したがってタイトルのOn The Same Sideは味方同士という意味になると思われます。

この曲は2009年に発売された彼のSongs for You, Truths for Meの2枚組デラックス版(2-disc deluxe edition)に収録されており，アルバムのタイトルからもわかるように，広い意味で人間関係を歌ったものだと個人的には思っています。

歌詞に登場する相手が恋人であっても，あるいは友人や家族であってもこの曲は成立すると思いますが，I need to get back but there's nowhere ever feels this safeという一節があることを考えると，友人関係というよりはむしろ家族や恋人との関係を歌ったものと考える方が相応しいのかもしれません。
