「いつまでもあると思うな親と金」とよく言われます。我々はともすれば今あるものはあって当然と考えてそれ以上を求めてしまうため，自分のことを一番大切にしてくれる相手に限って一番傷つけたりするものですが，この機会に相手がしてくれたことを相手に感謝するのも悪くないかもしれません。
People say "You don't know what you have until it's gone,"  It's so easy for us to take what we have now for granted and to ask more.  Therefore those who you let down most are often those who love and care you most.  So it's not a bad idea to appreciate what they did for you and thank them whenever you have a chance.

Last night I was out driving
Coming home at the end of the working day
I was riding alone through the drizzling rain
On a deserted stretch of a county two-lane
When I came upon a wreck on the highway

There was blood and glass all over
And there was nobody there but me
As the rain tumbled down hard and cold
I seen a young man lying by the side of the road
He cried "Mister, won't you help me please"

An ambulance finally came and took him to Riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And I thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway

Sometimes I sit up in the darkness
And I watch my baby as she sleeps
Then I climb in bed and I hold her tight
I just lay there awake in the middle of the night
Thinking 'bout the wreck on the highway

昨日の晩は
外で車を運転してた
その日の仕事が終わった後で
家に戻るとこだった
小雨がしとしと降る中を
一人で車に乗ったまま
寂れた田舎の２車線の
道路の上をとばしていたら
ハイウェイの
衝突事故に出くわした

壊れたガラスの破片とか
血が飛び散っていたけれど
人の姿は見えなくて
そこいたのは自分だけ
冷たい雨が降って来て
雨脚も強くなって来た頃に
その道路の片隅に
若い男が一人
倒れてるのに気が付いた
ヤツにこう言われたよ
「すみません，どうか助けてください」って

救急車が
一台ようやくやって来て
Riverside病院へ
そいつを乗せて運んで行った
救急車が遠ざかるのを
見送りながら考えた
そいつの彼女や奥さんのこと
真夜中に警察が
玄関先までやって来て
ハイウェイの
事故で亡くなりましたって
そんな風に言うんだろう

部屋の灯りを消したまま
ベッドの上に身を起こし
あいつが眠っているとこを
眺めていることがある
それからまたベッドに戻り
あいつのことを抱きしめて
そこで寝転がったまま
ハイウェイの
事故のことを考える

（余談）

個人的に「やらなきゃ（言わなきゃ）良かった」よりも「やっておけば（言っておけば）よかった」の方が後悔が大きいような気がします。
