歌詞の中で相手は主人公に公衆電話から電話をかけようとしていますが，ここは文字通り受け取っていいのか，あるいはメタファーと捉えた方がいいのでしょうか？携帯電話が容易に手に入る現代社会に生きていることを考えれば，ここはメタファーと解釈すべきなのでしょうが，この曲についてJames Bayが「一緒にいられなくなったとても親しい人(somebody very close to me, who had to move away)」とのことを歌った」と言っているので，その点を考慮すれば文字通りに解釈するのが正しいのかもしれません。また「 そのポケット一杯の，コインを全部使っても，大したことは話せない，二言三言交わすだけ(And for all the pennies in your pocket, We barely get a second just to speak)」という箇所についても同様でしょう。
In the song, the second person is trying to make a payphone call to the narrator.  Should we take it literally?  Or should we take it as a metaphor?  In this modern society where a cellphone is widely available, a metaphorical interpretation seems to be more likely.  Considering James Bay said the song's about "somebody very close to me, who had to move away," it should be taken literally.  So should be lines like "And for all the pennies in your pocket, We barely get a second just to speak",

（余談）

リード文で述べた箇所ですが，ここを文字通りに解釈するとある疑問が浮かんできます。すなわち「相手は一体どこにいるのか？」という疑問です。

公衆電話のある場所なのは間違いありませんが，チベットの山の中でさえ携帯が通じるこのご時世であるにもかかわらず公衆電話を使わねばならない場所と言えば，個人的には「あの場所」しか考えられません。

しかも「両手もすっかり冷たくなって，唇の色も変わってる，きっと震えているんだな」ということは公衆電話の周囲の気温が低いということです・・・まさかシベリアあたりの「塀の中」じゃないですよね？
