日本人にとってbigという形容詞は「巨大な・壮大な(colossal)」や「重要な(important)」といった肯定的な意味なので，ある肥満気味の女性が自分のことを「太ってる (big)」と表現しているのを聞き，この言葉に「太っている」あるいは「肥満である」という意味があると気づいて驚きました。
To us Japanese, an adjective 'big' has some positive connotations only, such as 'colossal', 'huge' and 'important.'  So I was surprised to find it has a negative one like fat or obese when I heard a woman who seemed to be pretty overweight describe herself  as 'big.'
