「help」の同義語は「save（救う）」だと思っていませんか？学生時代私はそう思っていたわけですが実は違います。実際には「aid（援助する）」「assist（手伝う」「support（支援する）」などが「help」の同義語だからです。そのため「ご自由にどうぞ (Help yourself)」という表現を初めて目にした時には「ちょっと待ってよ。どうやって自分を自分で『助ける』られるわけ？助けてくれるのは他人でしょ？」と思ってしまいました。
Don't you think 'help' is a synonym for 'save'?  Actually it's not but I believed so when I was in school.  Synonyms for 'help' are 'aid', 'assist' and 'support'.  An idiom "Help yourself" meaning "Please take what you want without asking permission"confused me a lot when I came across it for the first time.  I was thinking like, "Hey wait!  How can I help myself?  It should be someone else who helps me."

思わず笑ってしまうほど自信たっぷりの主人公ですが，「ご自由にどうぞ」と言った相手から「いや結構です」と言われるかもとは思わないんでしょうか？・・・思わないんでしょうね。
