Holding Back the Years シンプリー・レッド (Simply Red)

歌詞の中で主人公は自分の両親を「父さんあるいはオヤジ」ではなく「父親 (pater)」，そして「母さんあるいはママ」ではなく「母親 (mater)」と呼んでいますが，これは助けが欲しい時に側にいて支えてくれなかった両親に対する主人公の心理的な距離を表しているそうです。
In the lyrics, the narrator refers his parents as 'pater' and 'mater' not as 'father or dad' and 'mother or mom'. People say that represents the narrator's emotional distance from his parents who were not there when he needed their help and support.

(余談）

Simply RedのMick Hucknallは，３歳の時に母親が家を出たため父親に育てられたそうで，この曲はそのことを元に書かれたと言われていますが，そのことと上のミュージック・ヴィデオを併せて考えると，この曲は「過去との決別」といったものがテーマのような気がします。
