かの天文学者ケプラーは，占星術を「賢い母親（天文学）のバカな娘（占星術）」と言って切り捨てたそうですが，実際には，勤め先の給料がほとんどなかったため，生活を維持すべく，金持ちの依頼人に占星術のアドヴァイスを与えたり，軽蔑していた「教育のない大衆」に向けて天文学のデータを改ざんして提供したりしていたようです。
そういう事情があったためかどうかはわかりませんが，その後「娘が稼がなければ，母親は飢え死にする」と言って態度を軟化させたのだとか。
これを「節を曲げた」ととるか「大人になった」ととるかで，その人の精神年齢がある程度わかるような気がします。
