Do They Know It's Christmas? バンド・エイド(Band Aid)

'84年末に結成されたイギリスとアイルランドのスーパーバンド、バンド・エイド（Band Aid）
の曲です。爆発的に売れて提唱者のボブ・ゲルドフ（Bob Geldof）は叙勲を受けました。
チャリティソングとしては米国のWe Are The Worldの方が有名ですが、思うにその原因は歌詞にあるのではないでしょうか。聴く者の良心に訴える後者のWe Are The Worldとは異なり、この曲ではアフリカでは多くの人が餓死しているという現実を突きつけ、その具体的な問題解決法として募金を呼びかけます。メロディーも後者の方がキャッチーです。
ただ音楽史上でこの曲が果たした役割は後者に比べはるかに大きく、そういう意味でももっと認識されるべき曲ではないかと思います。
"Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid, a charity supergroup of British and Irish musicians.  The song became a blockbuster immediately after the release and brought an honorary knighthood to its founder Bob Geldof.   
Despite their preceding success, now we hear "We Are The World" much more often as a charity song than this.  I think one of the reasons lies in their lyrics.  While the lyrics of the latter asks those who have to show love and compassion toward those who don't,  that of the former blames us for not sharing our wealth with the malnourished in Africa.  The melody of the former seems to be less catchy than that of the latter.  
Considering the importance in the music history, however, I believe this song is greatly underrated and should deserve more.
