「Way hay and up she rises （そいつがグッとせり上がってくる）」という下りに登場する「she（そいつ）」は一体何を意味しているのでしょうか？最初にこの曲を聞いた時には「船」を表していると思いましたし，そう考えている人も少なくないのですが，この「she」が「太陽」を表していると考える説，そしてその「酔っ払いの船乗り (drunken sailor)」の生殖器官だとする説もあります。
What does she in "Way hay and up she rises" is referred to?  When I heard it first, I thought it stands for the ship the drunken sailor is aboard.  Many seem to agree with me but some people think represents the sun.  Others think it's the sailor's reproductive organ.

リードで述べた「彼女がグッとせり上がってくる」という下りは，錨を上げて船が航行できるようになった状態を表しているのだとか。

（余談）

「そいつ」が何を表しているのかという点に関しては「太陽」と「生殖器官」のセンは薄いと考えています。というのも「女性 (she)」として表現される「月」と異なり，前者は「男性 (he)」で表現されるのが一般的だからです。いわんや後者をや。

それはともかく，酔っぱらって遅刻あるいは欠勤したからといって，当人の了解なしに「剃毛」あるいは「上司の娘の寝室に放り込む」などという行為を行っては（日本の法権が及ぶかどうかはともかくとして）刑法208条の暴行罪が成立します。
