The Sign エイス・オブ・ベイス (Ace of Base)

19世紀後半に日本が鎖国政策を廃止して以来，日本語は大量の英語を輸入してきましたが，時間の経過とともに意味が変化していき，最終的に日本語で別のものを指すようになってしまったものもあります。そのひとつが「サイン (sign)」という言葉です。
Japanese language has imported so many English words since Japan ended its close-door policy in late-nineteenth century.  Some of them have been modified over time and came to represent something different in Japanese.  One of them is a word 'sign'.

（余談）

日本語でも「サイン（する）」といえば，通常は「署名（する）」を意味しますが，いわゆる有名人のautographを「サイン」と呼んでいる場合も少なくありません。

これに対して英語の場合，「sign」には：
①看板や標識など
②（病気などの）兆候
③（$などの）記号
④（占星術における）星座のシンボル
などの意味があるものの，上で述べたような「有名人のautograph」という意味はありません。
