「モットー」とは「理念や目標，理想などを表した短い文」で例えばGoogleの「Don't be evil（汚いことをするな）」のようなものですが，往々にしてダメになってしまいます。
Motto is "a brief statement used to express a principle, goal, or ideal" such as Google's "Don't be evil". Unfortunately, more often than not it goes wrong and compromised.

（余談）
なにしろ法律と違い「理念」には罰則がありません。他の方はともかく己の実体験に照らすと，人間というものは罰則という外的要因（＝縛り）がない限りそこから外れていくのが自然です。
したがってそれがいかなる「motto（オキテ）」であろうとも，軍資金が底を尽いたり年を取って体力が追いつかなくなったりすればあっという間に廃れてしまいますが，私の場合はそもそも「やれたらやる」がモットーなので守るのは意外なほど容易です。
