歌詞に登場する「in the dark」は不安やウツを表していると最初は思っていたものの，Charlie XCXの説明によれば，この曲は夜遊びやパーティを通して本当に大切で心の通い合う相手と出会うことを歌ったものだそうです。
At first I thought "in the dark" refers to things like anxiety and depression.    Charlie XCX explains this song is about finding the people you truly love and connect with through nights outs and partying.

（余談）

この曲を和訳する際，冒頭から続くのCharlie XCXのパートは比較的楽に訳せたものの，Sam Smithのパートに至ってピタッと手が止まりました。

決して内容がわかりにくかったわけでも文法的に訳しにくかったわけでもありません。むしろ訳しやすい内容だったわけですが，デュエットという構成上，ここはいわゆる「男言葉」で訳す方が良いように思われたのでそうしようとしたことが理由でした。

どうしても彼のパートの訳文が「女言葉」（具体的に言えばマツコ・デラックスが喋っている感じ）」で頭に浮かんできたからです。

結局しばらく悩んだ末に「男言葉」にする違和感を拭いきれず，自分の直観に従い頭の中で聞こえて来たマツコ・デラックスの声で和訳しました。

・・・またこの２人声が似てるんですよ。
