In fact many fairy tales are not that innocent or happy as we usually believe. Actually some of them are quite gruesome. For example, in the Brother's Grimm version of Cinderella, the mean step-sisters are advised by their mother cut off their toes and heels to make them fit in the slipper the Prince brought. Despite their 'bloody' effort, he chose Cinderella instead. What's worse they end up in being picked their eyes out by the doves from the heaven and had to live the rest of their lives as a blind.

（余談）
冒頭で述べたシンデレラの話ですが，全部が全部このグリム兄弟 (the Brother Grimm)版のような，まさに「残酷で陰鬱な (grim)」作りかというと決してそうではなく，ペローによるフランス版では，姉もハンサムな貴族と結婚して幸せに暮らすことになっています。
恨み骨髄であるはずの義理の姉に対してもこの好待遇。フランスにおける「博愛 (fraternité)」の精神を見たような気がします。
