I have heard that every one of us has a special music running deep inside our soul and whatever music we love in our lives has something in common with it. I always translate English lyrics into Japanese, wondering what my music sounds like.
(I'm standing on a bridge.)」 (I'm standing on the bridge.)」
Do you think the protagonist is actually waiting for someone on a bridge? Despite the music video below in which Avril Lavigne actually walking down a street in the night, I think otherwise. I think it's a metaphor for being stuck in a difficult situation. You wonder how I can be so sure. Well, the key lies in the opening line: I'm standing on a bridge. Not "I'm standing on the bridge." That means the bridge she's saying she's on is not specified. If she's actually waiting for someone (in this case the second person who knows which is the bridge she's mentioning), she would say "I'm standing on the bridge." Otherwise, the second person can't figure out where to find her. I'm With You (Avril Lavigne)
[Verse 1]
I'm standing on a bridge
I'm waiting in the dark
I thought that you'd be here by now
There's nothing but the rain
No footsteps on the ground
I'm listening but there's no sound
[Pre-Chorus]
Isn't anyone trying to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home?
[Chorus]
It's a damn cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand?
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I I'm with you
I'm with you
[Verse 2]
I'm looking for a place
I'm searching for a face
Is anybody here I know
Cause nothing's going right
And everything's a mess
And no one likes to be alone
[Pre-Chorus & Chorus]
[Bridge]
Oh why is everything so confusing
Maybe I'm just out of my mind
Yeah-he-yaa, yeah-he-yah, yeah-he-yah, yeah-he-yah, yeah!
[Chorus]
[Outro x2]
Take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I I'm with you
I'm with you
It might sound out of blue, lyrically speaking this song somehow reminds me of some of Eminem's. Does it sound outlandish? Probably so but this is what I think. In my opinion, one of characteristics that make him stand out from the crowd is that his lyrics have multiple layers of meaning. So does this song. In this song, the opening verse, for example, could be taken both literally and metaphorically. 'Long drive' could mean that they're living apart physically, mentally or maybe both. 'Burning flames' conjures up an image of a passionate but ephemeral love and of a terrible consequence at the same time. Style (Taylor Swift)
Midnight,
You come and pick me up, no headlights
Long drive,
Could end in burning flames or paradise
Fade into view, oh, it's been a while since I have even heard from you (heard from you)
I should just tell you to leave 'cause I
Know exactly where it leads but I
Watch us go 'round and 'round each time
You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style
We never go out of style
You got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt
And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style
We never go out of style.
So it goes
He can't keep his wild eyes on the road
Takes me home
Lights are off, he's taking off his coat
I say, "I heard, oh, that you've been out and about with some other girl, some other girl."
He says, "What you've heard is true but I
Can't stop thinking about you," and I...
I said, "I've been there too a few times."
'Cause you got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style
We never go out of style
You got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt
And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style
We never go out of style
Take me home
Just take me home, yeah.
Just take me home
(out of style)
You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye
And I got that red lip classic thing that you like
And when we go crashing down, we come back every time
'Cause we never go out of style
We never go out of style
Probably almost every one of you knows this song. It's one of the absolute classics from the 1970s and nobody can deny it. Although I heard someone say it's about a treatment facility for mentally disturbed people or a mental institution, which I have believed for a long time, Daily Mail November 9, 2007 reported Don Henley denied it saying "It was really about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about the uneasy balance between art and commerce." Hotel California (Eagles)
[Verse 1 - Don Henley]
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be heaven or this could be hell
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say
[Hook]
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
You can find it here
[Verse 2]
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said, we haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
[Hook]
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They living it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis
[Verse 3]
Mirrors on the ceiling
The pink champagne on ice
And she said: "We are all just prisoners here of our own device"
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
"Relax" said the night man
"We are programmed to receive
You can check-out any time you like
But you can never leave!"
* Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Bends・・・ Benzではなく,Bendsとなっていることからもtwist and bend(捩じって曲げる)という表現と掛けているように思われます
** Please bring me my wine, He said, we haven't had that spirit here since 1969 ・・・ ワインは醸造酒であり蒸留酒(スピリッツ)ではないので,fighting spirits(闘争心)のような「気概」といった意味合いであると考えられます。
Sometimes stories get blown up more than it should be and go unchallenged. Urban legends are one of those blown-up stories. This song was written after Phil Collins divorced his first wife Andrea and it's actually about his anger towards her.
Some people believe, however, there's a secret story behind the lyrics. For example, Eminem mentioned it in his Stan lyrics. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2014/01/stan-eminem.html (I don't think Em believes such a thing, of course.) Just let me make one thing absolutely clear here. That's just an urban legend and not true. In The Air Tonight (Phil Collins)
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am
Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well I remember, I remember, don't worry, how could I ever forget
It's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, oh no you don't fool me
Well the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
You know the song by Phil Collins "In the Air of the Night"
About that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drowning
But didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him
Phil CollinsのIn the Air of the Nightって曲があんだろ?
Phil Collins
http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2015/01/superheroes-script.html
Even I who doesn't know much about music can name a song titled like Hero, Heroes or Superheroes without any difficulty. Probably one of the best known one is Heroes by David Bowie. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/02/heroes-david-bowie.html
Some of you may mention The Script's Superheroes I posted last month. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2015/01/superheroes-script.html
In response to my search query as "songs titled heroes", Wikipedia listed 6 songs including the David Bowie's and the list ends with this song.
Songs titled either Heroine, Heroines or Super heroine, on the other hand, are not many. All I could find were Heroines by Diablo Swing Orchestra and Super heroine by an artist called Miwa. It seems that we need more heroes and superheroes than heroines and super heroines. Heroes (Alesso ft. Tove Lo)
We go hideaway in daylight
We go undercover when under sun
Got a secret side in plain sight
Where the streets are empty
That’s where we run
Everyday people do
Everyday things but I
Can’t be one of them
I know you hear me now
We are a different kind
We can do anything
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
Me and you
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
Me and you
We could be
Anybody’s got the power
They don’t see it
‘Cos they don’t understand
Spin around and round for hours
You and me we got the world in our hands
Everyday people do
Everyday things but I
Can’t be one of them
I know you hear me now
We are a different kind
We can do anything
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
Me and you
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
Me and you
We could be
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
Me and you
We could be
All we're looking for is love and a little light
Love and a little light
(we could be)
All we're looking for is love and a little light
Love and a little light
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
Me and you
We could be
We're living in a world where you can search almost anything: For example, when you travel, you probably use Google Map and a transportation guide to find the best route to get there and book a hotel at a website where you can find the best offers. You reserve a rent-a-car and sometimes buy a new suitcase online. I know that saves a lot of you energy and money as well as time, of course. Still I can't help feeling that something is missing, something that is very important for traveling. The Way (Fastball)
They made up their minds
And they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going without ever
Knowing the way?
They drank up the wine
And they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down they started walking
Where were they going without ever
Knowing the way?
[Chorus:]
Anyone can see the road that they walk on
Is paved in gold
And it's always summer
They'll never get cold
They'll never get hungry
They'll never get old and grey
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They won't make it home
But they really don't care
They wanted the highway
They're happier there today, today
Their children woke up
And they couldn't find them
They left before the sun came up that day
They just drove off and left it all behind 'em
But where were they going without ever
Knowing the way?
Have you ever felt this way before? When someone tells you 'Don't', that immediately makes you want to do it so badly. I have and still I do. I believe many of you feel the same way.
The song is from the soundtrack of a film Fifty Shade of Grey Soundtrack. The music video below features one of the main stars, Dakota Johnson and contains some explicit scenes, including nudity and BDSM theme. It's NSFW (Not Safe For Work). Make sure no one's around before playing it. Earned It (The Weeknd)
[Verse 1]
You make it look like it’s magic
Cause I see nobody, nobody but you, you, you
I'm never confused
Hey, hey
I'm so used to being used
[Pre-Hook]
So I love when you call unexpected
Cause I hate when the moment's expected
So I'ma care for you, you, you
I'ma care for you, you, you, you, yeah
[Hook]
Cause girl you're perfect
You're always worth it
And you deserve it
The way you work it
Cause girl you earned it
Girl you earned it
[Verse 2]
You know our love would be tragic
So you don't pay it, don't pay it no mind
We live with no lies
Hey, hey
You're my favorite kind of night
[Pre-Hook & Hook]
[Verse 3]
On that lonely night
We said it wouldn't be love
But we felt the rush
It made us believe it was only us
Convinced we were broken inside, inside
The song may be about an unhealthy relationship which the protagonist experienced in the past. Together with the unsettling music video, however, the song seems (at least to me) to be about DV-related (domestic violence) issues. Surprisingly large number of people, an estimate says it's about 1.3 million, are suffering from the problem in this globe. Although about 85 percent of the victims are women, anyone could be a victim.
Run (Nicole Scherzinger)
[Verse 1]
Here's some advise for the next one
Don't let him lead you to the dark
Don't tell him all your secrets
He'll leave you with a broken heart
He'll try and tell you that he wants you
Just to keep you on the line
And right when you're about to move on
He pulls you back in every time
[Hook]
Here's advice for the next one
Run, run, run
Here's advice for the next one
Run, run, run
[Verse 2]
Darling I know that you're just like me
You give your love up way too fast
But once it's gone it's gone forever
And there's no coming back from that
He's got this perfect way about him
He'll make you think that you come first
But you'll get lost in the challenge
You're trying not to get hurt
[Hook]
Here's advice for the next one
Run, run, run
Here's advice for the next one
Run, run, run
[Bridge]
Don't even search for that four-letter word
You'll never get it out
You try, and try, and try
But he'll just shut you down
Don't wanna say I told you so
So please go now
[Hook]
Here's some advice for the next one
Run, run, run
Here's some advice for the next one
Run, run, run
Don't let him lead you to the darkにあるthe darkですが,訳文ではこれを実際の「暗がり」と捉え「あいつに言われても,暗がりには行かないで」としています。
http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2014/04/broken-jake-bugg.html
In today's music world, I don't think it's very uncommon that a song is re-written or re-recorded by the artist for much wider audience. One of these examples is Broken by Jake Bugg I posted before. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2014/04/broken-jake-bugg.html
Lay Me Down was originally released in 2014 as the first single from his debut album. Thanks to his commercial success, it was re-recorded to re-released this year 2015. Lay Me Down (Sam Smith)
Yes, I do, I believe
That one day I will be where I was
Right there, right next to you
And it's hard, the days just seem so dark
The moon, the stars are nothing without you
Your touch, your skin,
Where do I begin?
No words can explain the way I’m missing you
Deny this emptiness, this hole that I’m inside
These tears, they tell their own story
You told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling’s overwhelming, it's much too strong
Can I lay by your side, next to you, you
And make sure you’re alright?
I’ll take care of you,
And I don’t want to be here if I can’t be with you tonight
I’m reaching out to you
Can you hear my call? (who's to say you won't hear me?)
This hurt that I’ve been through
I’m missing you, missing you like crazy
You told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling’s overwhelming, it's much too strong
Can I lay by your side, next to you, you
And make sure you’re alright?
I’ll take care of you
And I don’t wanna be here if I can’t be with you tonight
Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side
Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side
A writer listed Eagle Eye Cherry as one of "10 One-Hit Wonder Bands From The 90s That Still Rock" but I have been totally ignorant of the song. It's the first time for me to hear this song and I quickly came to love it. The song could be interpreted in many ways. The protagonist could be leaving for school or job. Or he might be dying, leaving his love behind. Save Tonight (Eagle Eye Cherry)
Go on and close the curtains
'Cause all we need is candlelight
You and me, and a bottle of wine
To hold you tonight (oh)
Well we know I'm going away
And how I wish - I wish it weren't so
So take this wine and drink with me
And let's delay our misery
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
There's a log on the fire
And it burns like me for you
Tomorrow comes with one desire
To take me away (ohh it's true)
It ain't easy to say good-bye
Darlin' please, don't start to cry
'Cause girl you know I've got to go (oh)
And Lord I wish it wasn't so
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow comes to take me away
I wish that I, that I could stay
But girl you know I've got to go (oh)
And Lord I wish wasn't so
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight and fight the break of dawn
Come tomorrow - tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Tomorrow I'll be gone
Save tonight
Save tonight
Save tonight
Save tonight
Oh that's right
Save tonight
Save tonight

(Your paradise is something I've endured)」がその「決めのフレーズ」となりました。
Just a line in the lyrics would be enough for me to pick up the song as my blog entry. When I find it interesting or I can relate to, the song is very likely to appear on my blog as a post. This time, it was the line "Your paradise is something I've endured" that I found well said. I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore (Rise Against)
(Lyric Video)
On pins and needles we are waiting for the fall
We count the days scratching lines on the wall
Wait in the wings at someone's beck and call
No longer recognize the place that I call home
No longer recognize this face as my own
Somewhere, this fate, I lost control
We backed down, we took no for answers far too long
We felt those walls close around
I don't want to be here anymore
I know there's nothing left worth staying for
Your paradise is something I've endured, whoa whoa
See I don't think I can fight this anymore
I'm listening with one foot out the door
And something has to die to be reborn
And I don't want to be here anymore
On hand and foot we answered every single call
Weathered every day like passing storms
But when they break we will all be gone
Won't back down, won't take no for answers anymore
These walls close, we pace back and forth
I don't want to be here anymore
I know there's nothing left worth staying for
Your paradise is something I've endured, whoa whoa
See I don't think I can fight this anymore
I'm listening with one foot out the door
But something has to die to be reborn
I don't want to be here anymore
The point where we break gets closer everyday
But where do we go? But where do we go?
I don't want to be here anymore
I know there's nothing left worth staying for
Your paradise is something I've endured, whoa whoa
See I don't think I can fight this anymore,
I'm listening with one foot out the door
But something has to die to be reborn
And I don't want to be here anymore
Anymore
The Free Dictionary defines 'closing time' as 'the time at which pubs must legally stop selling alcoholic drinks' and Google does as 'the regular time at which a restaurant, store, or other place closes to the public each day'. Watching the music video, you may think the lyrics are about being asked to leave a bar and pretty self-explanatory but actually they're not. The entire song is a metaphor for 'being born' and the song title 'Closing Time' represents a 'birth'. Closing Time (Semisonic)
Closing time
Open all the doors and let you out into the world
Closing time
Turn the lights up over every boy and every girl.
Closing time
One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer.
Closing time
You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home
Closing time
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from.
Closing time
This room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters come.
So gather up your jackets, and move it to the exits
I hope you have found a friend.
Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.
Yeah, I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home
Closing time
Time for you to go out to the places you will be from
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home
Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end
(I know who I want to take me home)」や「次にお前の弟妹(きょうだい)が,ここにやってくるまでは,この店は開かないよ(This room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters come)」といった箇所も腑に落ちます。
This song is nominated for Academy Award Best Original Song. According to IMDB and Wikipedia, it's a romantic drama between two people: one is a talented young female artist who is struggling to overcome the psychological pressure in the music industry. The other is a young police officer who has a political ambition. Wow, sounds really exciting, doesn't it? (Well, not really.) Sorry but I'm not a big fan of romantic movies. Grateful (Rita Ora)
There were a lot of tears I had to cry through
A lot of battles left me battered and bruised
And I was shattered, had my heart ripped in two
I was broken, I was broken
There were a lot of times I stumbled and crashed
When I was on the edge, down to my last chance
So many times when I was so convinced that
I was over, I was over
But I had to fall yeah
To rise above it all
I'm grateful for the storm
Made me appreciate the sun
I'm grateful for the wrong ones
Made me appreciate the right ones
I'm grateful for the pain
For everything that made me break
I'm thankful for all my scars
'Cause they only make my heart
Grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful
Grateful
I was sinking, I was drowning in doubt
The weight all of the pain was weighing me down
Pulled it together and I pulled myself out
Learned a lesson, learned a lesson
That there's a lot you gotta go through, hell yes
But that's what got me strong, I got no regrets
And I've got only love, got no bitterness
Count my blessings, count my blessings, yeah
I'm proud of every tear, yeah
'Cause they got me here
I'm grateful for the storm
Made me appreciate the sun
I'm grateful for the wrong ones
Made me appreciate the right ones
I'm grateful for the pain
For everything that made me break
I'm thankful for all my scars
'Cause they only make my heart
Grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful
Grateful
There is nothing I would change
That even one mistake I made
I got lost, found myself, found my way
I'm grateful for the storm
Made me appreciate the sun
I'm grateful for the wrong ones
Made me appreciate the right ones
I'm grateful for the pain
For everything that made me break
I'm thankful for all my scars
'Cause they only make my heart
Grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful, grateful, oh
Grateful
You know that I'm grateful
You know that I care
No time for the wrong ones
I'll always be there
Grateful
Woah (Grateful, grateful, grateful)
I'm grateful, oh yeah (Grateful, grateful)
(I'm grateful for the storm, Made me appreciate the sun, I'm grateful for the wrong ones, Made me appreciate the right ones)」と語る主人公ですが,前半はいいとしても,後半まで言い切ってしまって本当にいいんでしょうか?

Ooh, you make me live
Whatever this world can give to me
It's you, you're all I see
Ooh, you make me live now honey
Ooh, you make me live
You're the best friend
That I ever had
I've been with you such a long time
You're my sunshine
And I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
You're my best friend
Ooh, you make me live
I've been wandering round
But I still come back to you
In rain or shine
You've stood by me girl
I'm happy at home (happy at home)
You're my best friend.
Ooh, you make me live
Whenever this world is cruel to me
I got you to help me forgive
Ooh, you make me live now honey
Ooh, you make me live
You're the first one
When things turn out bad
You know I'll never be lonely
You're my only one
And I love the things
I really love the things that you do
You're my best friend
Ooh, you make me live.
I'm happy, happy at home
You're my best friend
You're my best friend
Ooh, you make me live
You, you're my best friend.
http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/07/i-need-your-love-calvin-harris-ft-ellie.html
"Why should it be 'every other day' not 'every day'?" was what came to me when I read the lyrics. Someone says it represents the distance between them. Could be.
By the way, they say it's a sequel to their previous collaboration I Need You Love in which the protagonist was trying to taking back the second person's love knowing she'll never make it. It makes sense to me. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/07/i-need-your-love-calvin-harris-ft-ellie.html Outside (Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding)
Look at what you've done
Stand still, falling away from me
When it takes so long
Fire's out, what do you want to be?
Now I'm holding on
Myself was never enough for me
Gotta be so strong
There's a power in what you do
Now every other day I'll be watching you
I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
We did everything right
Now I'm on the outside
I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
We did everything right
Now I'm on the outside
So, you give me no reason
For me to stay close to you
Tell me what lovers do
How are we still breathing?
It's never for us to choose
I'll be the strength in you
Now I'm holding on (I'm holding on)
Myself was never enough for me
Gotta be so strong
There's a power in what you do
Now every other day I'll be watching you
I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
We did everything right
Now I'm on the outside
I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
We did everything right
Now I'm on the outside
I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
I'll show you what it feels like
I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
We did everything right
Now I'm on the outside
We don't know what's going to happen in the next day or the next moment. This moment might be the last chance we can tell others that we're sorry or we love them. I have never told my grandmother that I loved her so much while she was still alive. I always thought I had another chance but she passed away before I actually did so. I wish I could rewind but I know I can't. When you want to tell someone that you're sorry or you love them, don't be shy to say so. Mad (Ne-Yo)
She's staring at me, I'm sitting wondering what she's thinking
Ummm nobody's talking, 'cause talking just turns into screaming (oh,)
And now as I'm yelling over her, she yelling over me,
All that that means is neither of us are listening,
And what's even worse, that we don't even remember why we're fighting
So both of us are mad for nothing (fighting for),
Nothing (crying for),
Nothing (ooh,h)
But we won't let it go for nothing (don't let for),
Nothing.
It should be nothing
To a love like what we got oh, baby
I know sometimes it's gonna rain,
But baby can we make up now
'cause I can't sleep through the pain (can't sleep through the pain)?
Girl I don't wanna go to bed mad at you
And I don't want you to go to bed mad at me
No I don't wanna go to bed mad at you
And I don't want you to go to bed mad at me (oh, no)
Umm
And it gets me upset girl when you're constantly accusing
(asking questions like you already know)
We're fighting this war, baby, when both of us are losing
(this ain't the way that love is supposed to go. What happened to working it out?)
We fall into this place where you ain't backing down, and I ain't backing down,
So what the hell do we do now?
It's all for nothing (fighting for)
Nothing (crying for),
Nothing... (ooh,h)
We won't let it go for nothing (don't let for),
Nothing.
It should be nothing
To a love like what we got oh, baby
I know sometimes it's gonna rain (Oh, it's gonna rain),
But baby can we make up now
'cause I can't sleep through the pain (can't sleep through the pain)?
Girl I don't wanna go to bed mad at you
And I don't want you to go to bed mad at me
No I don't wanna go to bed mad at you
And I don't want you to go to bed mad at me (oh, no)
Oh, baby this love ain't gon' be perfect (perfect, perfect oh, no)
And just how good it's gonna be
We can fuss and we can fight
Long as everything is alright
Between us before we go to sleep...
Baby we're gonna be...
Happy....
Oh, ....oh,
Baby, I know sometimes it's gonna rain (it's gonna rain),
But baby can we make up now (can we make up now?)
'cause I can't sleep through the pain (can't sleep through the pain)?
Girl I don't wanna go to bed mad at you
And I don't want you to go to bed mad at me
No I don't wanna go to bed mad at you
And I don't want you to go to bed mad at me (oh, no, no, no)
Last month on January 15th which was the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. I posted Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday. I came to know the song just because my friend mentioned it during our conversation last year. This song Glory is featured in Selma is a 2014 American film depicting 1960s the Civil Rights Movement. When I came across this song in the course of finding songs nominated for the 2015 Academy Awards Best Original Song, I felt as if I had been led to this song in some mysterious way. Glory (John Legend ft. Common)
[Chorus: John Legend]
One day when the glory comes
It will be ours, it will be ours
One day when the war is won
We will be sure, we will be sure
Oh glory
[Verse 1: Common]
Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weapon
Formed against, yes glory is destined
Every day women and men become legends
Sins that go against our skin become blessings
The movement is a rhythm to us
Freedom is like religion to us
Justice is juxtapositionin' us
Justice for all just ain't specific enough
One son died, his spirit is revisitin' us
True and livin' livin' in us, resistance is us
That's why Rosa sat on the bus
That's why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up
When it go down we woman and man up
They say, "Stay down", and we stand up
Shots, we on the ground, the camera panned up
King pointed to the mountain top and we ran up
[Chorus]
[Bridge: John Legend]
Now the war is not over, victory isn't won
But we'll fight on to the finish
And then when it’s all done
We'll cry glory, oh glory
We'll cry glory, oh glory
[Verse 2: Common]
Selma is now for every man, woman and child
Even Jesus got his crown in front of a crowd
They marched with the torch, we gon' run with it now
Never look back, we done gone hundreds of miles
From dark roads he rose, to become a hero
Facin' the league of justice, his power was the people
Enemy is lethal, a king became regal
Saw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagle
The biggest weapon is to stay peaceful
We sing, our music is the cuts that we bleed through
Somewhere in the dream we had an epiphany
Now we right the wrongs in history
No one can win the war individually
It takes the wisdom of the elders and young people's energy
Welcome to the story we call victory
Comin' of the Lord, my eyes have seen the glory
[Chorus]
[Outro: John Legend]
When the war is done, when it's all said and done
We'll cry glory, oh glory
(You're what you love, not who loves you)」と言っています。http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/04/save-rock-and-roll-fall-out-boy-ft.html
Who are we? What defines us? Scientists say it's our genome but Fall Out Boy say "You're what you love, not who loves you" in their Save Rock'n Roll. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2013/04/save-rock-and-roll-fall-out-boy-ft.html
Religious leaders and theologians would have a different answer to the question and this is mine: I think it's our memory that defines us. That's why we're so afraid of losing it.
A country singer Glen Campbell has been battling Alzheimer's disease for more than four years and moved into an Alzheimer's long-term care and treatment facility last year. This song is the theme of a 2014 American documentary film, Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me. It's nominated for the Academy Awards Best Original Song. I'm Not Gonna Miss You (Glen Campbell)
I'm still here, but yet I'm gone
I don't play guitar or sing my songs
They never defined who I am
The man that loves you 'til the end
You're the last person I will love
You're the last face I will recall
And best of all, I'm not gonna miss you
Not gonna miss you
I'm never gonna hold you like I did
Or say I love you to the kids
You're never gonna see it in my eyes
It's not gonna hurt me when you cry
I'm never gonna know what you go through
All the things I say or do
All the hurt and all the pain
One thing selfishly remains
I'm not gonna miss you
I'm not gonna miss you
You're the last person I will love
You're the last face I will recall
And best of all, I'm not gonna miss you
Not gonna miss you
特に太字にしたthe last person...the last face という表現です。 You're the last person I expected to see here.(まさかここで会うとは思いませんでした)というように,字面とは逆の意味で使われるのですが,この映画の重要なテーマのひとつ,アルツハイマー病という文脈で考えると,ここは字義通りに取りたくなります。
(And best of all, I'm not gonna miss you)」という文が続くため,その意味で取ると辻褄が合いません。
(You're never gonna see it in my eyes)」や「そのことで,たとえお前が悲しんでも,それさえ何とも思わなくなる
http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2012/01/all-of-lights-kanye-west-ft-rihanna-kid.html
When I posted his All of The Lights in which he collaborated with Rihanna, I didn't hesitate for a second to label it as 'hiphop'. It was indeed a hiphop song and I believed nobody would argue about it. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2012/01/all-of-lights-kanye-west-ft-rihanna-kid.html Seeing Kanye and Rihanna teamed up again, you may think it goes straight to the 'hiphop' category. This time I'm not sure about it. It sounds rather country than hiphop. For Five Seconds (Rihanna ft. Kanye West and Paul McCartney)
I think I've had enough
I might get a little drunk
I say what's on my mind
I might do a little time
Cause all of my kindness
Is taken for weakness
Now I'm FourFiveSeconds from wildin'
And we got three more days 'til Friday
I'm just tryna make it back home by Monday mornin'
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
Ooh, that's all I want
Woke up an optimist
Sun was shinin', I'm positive
Then I heard you was talkin' trash
Hold me back, I'm 'bout to spaz
I'm FourFiveSeconds from wildin'
And we got three more days 'til Friday
I'm tryna make it back home by Monday mornin'
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
Ooh, that's all I want
And I know that you're up tonight
Thinkin', "How could I be so selfish?"
But you called 'bout a thousand times
Wondering where I've been
Now I know that you're up tonight
Thinkin' "How could I be so reckless?"
But I just can't apologize
I hope you can understand
If I go to jail tonight
Promise you'll pay my bail
See they want to buy my pride
But that just ain't up for sale
See all of my kindness
Is taken for weakness
Now I'm FourFiveSeconds from wildin'
And we got three more days 'til Friday
I'm tryna make it back home by Monday mornin'
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
Ooh, that's all I want
FourFiveSeconds from wildin'
And we got three more days 'til Friday
I'm just tryna make it back home by Monday mornin'
I swear I wish somebody would tell me
That's all I want
