I don't know what type of crime the narrator has committed and was charged of for three year prison sentence.  In Connecticut, for example, as of 2008 the mandatory minimum sentence for crimes such as murder and manslaughter was 25 years.  Considering it, it's not very likely the narrator killed someone.

（余談）

「あの懐かしい樫の木に，100本も黄色いリボンが結んであった (A hundred yellow ribbons 'round the ole oak tree)」と言う主人公ですが，私が個人的に気になったのは，リボンの数が「数百 (hundreds)」でも「たくさん (a lot of)」でもなく，正確に「(a hundred)」である点です。

なにしろこの主人公がその木を見ているのは，走っているバスのしかも窓越しにです。にもかかわらず，キッチリ100と断言していうあたり，この主人公，刑務所に行く前は

間違いなく「日本野鳥の会」に所属していたと思われます。
