I have heard that every one of us has a special music running deep inside our soul and whatever music we love in our lives has something in common with it. I always translate English lyrics into Japanese, wondering what my music sounds like.
The song title didn't ring a bell but I recognized the song the moment when it started. I didn't know it's one of Celine Dion's songs. Wikipedia says it's written by David Foster and and Edgar Bronfman, Jr., specially for a Japanese drama. That explains a lot. To Love You More (Celine Dion)
[Verse 1]
Take me back in the arms I love
Need me like you did before
Touch me once again
And remember when
There was no one that you wanted more
Don't go you know you will break my heart
She won't love you like I will
I'm the one who'll stay
When she walks away
And you know I'll be standing here still
[Chorus]
I'll be waiting for you
Here inside my heart
I'm the one who wants to love you more
You will see I can give you
Everything you need
Let me be the one to love you more
[Verse 2]
See me as if you never knew
Hold me so you can't let go
Just believe in me
I will make you see
All the things that your heart needs to know
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
And some way all the love that we had can be saved
Whatever it takes we'll find a way
(I only hear what I want to)」のはなにも主人公だけではありません。
The narrator isn't the only one who "only hear what they want to". Admit it or not, we're all the same as the narrator in a way or another. People call it 'confirmation bias' and that often feeds our prejudice as well as a faith in ourselves. Stay (I Missed You) (Lisa Loeb)
You say I only hear what I want to
You say I talk so all the time. So?
And I thought what I felt was simple
And I thought that I don't belong
And now that I am leaving
Now I know that I did something wrong cause I missed you
Yeah, I missed you
And you say I only hear what I want to:
I don't listen hard
I don't pay attention to the distance that you're running
Or to anyone, anywhere
I don't understand if you really care
I'm only hearing negative: no, no, no (bad)
And so I, I turned the radio on, I turned the radio up
And this woman was singin' my song:
The lover's in love and the other's run away
The lover is crying cause the other won't stay
Some of us hover when we weep for the other who was
Dying since the day they were born
Well. Well, this is not that:
I think that I'm throwing, but I'm thrown
And I thought I'd live forever, but now I'm not so sure
You try to tell me that I'm clever
But that won't take my anyhow, or anywhere with you
You said that I was naive
And I thought that I was strong
I thought, "hey, I can leave, I can leave."
Oh, but now I know that I was wrong, cause I missed you
Yeah, I missed you
You said you caught me ‘cause you want me
And one day you’d let me go
You try to give away a keeper, but keep me cause you know you're just so scared to lose
And you say, "Stay."
In many films and TV series, especially in American ones cars are described as a symbol to represent something very important to people's lives. So damaging someone's car deliberately often is a way to express the magnitude of anger that the perpetrator has towards the owner.
It holds true with songs as well. For example, in Carrie Underwood's Before He Cheat the narrator "I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4-wheel drive carved my name into his leather seats I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights Slashed a hole in all 4 tires." Bust Your Windows (Jazmine Sullivan)
I bust the windows out your car
And, no, it didn't mend my broken heart
I'll probably always have these ugly scars
But right now, I don't care about that part
I bust the windows out your car
After I saw you laying next to her
I didn't wanna, but I took my turn
I'm glad I did it cause you had to learn
I must admit it helped a little bit
To think of how you'd feel when you saw it
I didn't know that I had that much strength
But I'm glad you see what happens when
You see you can't just play with people's feelings
Tell them you love them and don't mean it
You'll probably say that it was juvenile
But I think that I deserve to smile
I bust the windows out your car
You know I did it cause I left my mark
Wrote my initials with a crowbar
And then I drove off into the dark
I bust the windows out your car
You should feel lucky that was all I did
After 5 whole years of this bullshit
Gave you all of me and you played with it
I must admit it helped a little bit
To think of how you'd feel when you saw it
I didn't know that I had that much strength
But I'm glad you see what happens when
You see you can't just play with people's feelings
Tell them you love them and don't mean it
You probably say that it was juvenile
But I think that I deserve to smile
I bust the windows out your car
But it don't come back to my broken heart
You could never feel how I felt that day
Until it happens, baby, you don't know pain
Oh, yeah, I did it. You should know it
I ain't sorry. You deserved it
After what you did to me
You deserved it. I ain't sorry no, no
You broke my heart, so I broke your car
You caused me pain, so I did the same
Even though what you did to me was much worse
I had to do something to make you hurt
Oh, but why am I still crying?
Why am I the one who's still crying?
Oh, oh, you really hurt me, baby
You really, really hurt me, baby
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Now, watch me you
Now, watch me you
I bust the windows out your car
This song won the Grammy award for the Song of The Year in 1973. The singer Roberta Flack sings the joy of finding 'the one' by depicting various stages in the narrator's relationship with the second person. The writer Ewan MacColl wrote this song for his lover Peggy Seeger, who was married to another person then and later became his wife. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack)
The first time, ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars
Were the gifts you gave
To the dark, and the endless skies
My Love
And the first time, ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like the trembling heart
Of a captive bird
That was there, at my command
My Love
And the first time, ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy
Would fill the earth
And last, til the end of time
My Love
And last, 'til the end of time
My love
The first time, ever I saw
Your face
Your face
Your fa-ace
Your face
What does 'Constant Craving' mean? Probably I'm not the only one who has the question. I read that someone once asked k. d. lang about the meaning of the song on Twitter and she replied to it, saying it's about "divine dissatisfaction". I don't know why she put 'divine' before 'dissatisfaction' but maybe it's dissatisfaction that has been keeping us human moving forward Constant Craving (k. d. lang)
Even through the darkest phase
Be it thick or thin
Always someone marches brave
Here beneath my skin
And constant (Constant)
Craving (Craving)
Has always (Always)
Been (Been)
Maybe a great magnet pulls
All souls to what's true
Or maybe it is life itself
That feeds wisdom to its youth
Constant (Constant)
Craving (Craving)
Has always (Always)
Been (Been)
Craving
Ah, constant craving
Has always been
Has always been
Constant (Constant)
Craving (Craving)
Has always (Always)
Been (Been)
Constant (Constant)
Craving (Craving)
Has always (Always)
Been (Been)
Craving
Ah, constant craving
Has always been
Has always been
Has always been
(Has always)
Always been

Sometimes music videos mislead us. In this case, the music video below is telling us that people are having a good time in a party venue called Love Shack. That makes it TV friendly but I don't believe that's what the lyrics suggesting. Love Shack (The B 52's)
If you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says
"15 miles to the
Love Shack"
Love Shack, yeah, yeah
I'm headin' down the Atlanta highway
Lookin' for the love getaway
Headed for the love getaway
I got me a car, it's as big as a whale
And we're headin' on down to the Love Shack
I got me a Chrysler, it seats about 20
So hurry up and bring your jukebox money
The love shack is a little old place where we can get together
Love Shack, baby (a-Love Shack, baby)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
(Love, baby, that's where it's at)
Sign says (woo) "Stay away, fools"
Cause love rules at the Love Shack
Well, it's set way back in the middle of a field
Just a funky old shack and I gotta get back
Glitter on the mattress
Glitter on the highway
Glitter on the front porch
Glitter on the highway
The Love Shack is a little old place where we can get together
Love Shack, baby (Love Shack, baby)
Love Shack, that's where it's at
Love Shack, that's where it's at
Huggin' and a-kissin'
Dancin' and a-lovin'
Wearin' next to nothin'
Cause it's hot as an oven
The whole shack shimmies
When everybody's movin' around
And around and around and around
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin', baby
Folks linin' up outside just to get down
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin', baby
Funky little shack
Funky little shack
Hop in my Chrysler, it's as big as a whale and it's about to set sail
I got me a car, it seats about 20
So come on and bring your jukebox money
The Love Shack is a little old place where we can get together
Love Shack, baby (a-Love Shack, baby)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
(Love, baby, that's where it's at)
Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby
Knock a little louder, sugar
Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby
I can't hear you
Bang, bang on the door, baby
Bang, bang on the door
Bang, bang on the door, baby
Bang Bang
Your what?
Tin roof, rusted
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at, yeah)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Huggin' and a-kissin'
Dancin' and a-lovin'
At the Love Shack
I didn't know this song was produced by Mark Ronson who teamed up with Bruno Mars (King Midas of Pop in my opinion) for their Uptown Funk. He certainly has the Midas touch, too. Rehab (Amy Winehouse)
[Chorus]
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
[Verse 1]
I'd rather be at home with Ray
I ain't got seventy days
Cause there's nothing
There's nothing you can teach me
That I can't learn from Mr. Hathaway
I didn't get a lot in class
But I know it don't come in a shot glass
[Chorus]
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
[Verse 2]
The man said 'why do you think you here?'
I said 'I got no idea'
'I'm gonna, I'm gonna lose my baby
So I always keep a bottle near'
He said, "I just think you're depressed"
This me "Yeah, baby, and the rest"
[Chorus]]
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know...
[Bridge]
I don't ever wanna drink again
I just, ooh, I just need a friend
I'm not gonna spend ten weeks
Have everyone think I'm on the mend
It's not just my pride
It's just 'til these tears have dried
[Chorus]
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said, 'No, no, no.'
Yes, I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
An American researcher conducted an interesting experiment on the way our brain works. He had a volunteer sit on a chair in a show window on a busy street with a sign reading "Look at me!" over their head to see how the subject (volunteer) would react. While an adult subject handles the gaze of passer-by in a controlled manner, an teenage volunteer couldn't do so with her heat beats skyrocketing. Beautiful (Christina Aguilera)
[Intro]
Don't look at me
[Verse 1]
Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly it's hard to breathe
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed
[Chorus]
I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today
[Verse 2]
To all your friends you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill emptiness
The pieces gone, left the puzzle undone
Is that the way it is?
[Chorus]
You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today
[Verse 3]
No matter what we do
No matter what we do
No matter what we say
No matter what we say
We're the song inside the tune
Full of beautiful mistakes
And everywhere we go
And everywhere we go
The sun will always shine
The sun will always, always shine
And tomorrow we might wake on the other side
[Chorus]
We are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring us down
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today
[Outro]
Oh, Yeah, don't you bring me down today, yeah, ooh
Don't you bring me down ooh
Today
In the lyrics, two girls seem to argue wth each other over one man they unwillingly share. In the reality, it's very likely there's another party involved in this case, I mean another girl. I don't think those who play both sides limit themselves to only two sides. The Boy Is Mine (Brandy and Monica)
[Hook: Monica & Brandy]
You need to give it up
Had about enough
It's not hard to see
The boy is mine
I'm sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine
[Verse 1]
[Brandy]
Think its time we got this straight
Sit and talk face to face
There is no way you could mistake
Him for your man are you insane
[Monica]
But see I know that you may be
Just a bit jealous of me
But you're blind if you can't see
That his love is all in me
[Brandy]
See I tried to hesitate
I didn't want to say what he told me
He said without me he couldn't make it
Through the day, Ain't that a shame
[Monica]
But maybe you misunderstood
Cause I can't see how he could
Wanna change something that's so good
All my love was all it took
(The boy is mine)
[Hook]
[Verse 2]
[Monica]
Must you do the things you do
You keep on acting like a fool
You need to know it's me not you
And if you didn't know it's cause it's true
[Brandy]
I think that you should realize
And try to understand why
He is a part of my life
I know its killing you inside
[Monica]
You can say what you wanna say
What we have you can't take
From the truth you can't escape
I can tell the real from the fake
[Brandy]
When will you get the picture
Your the past I'm the future
Get away it's my time to shine
If you didn't know the boy is mine
[Hook]
[Verse 3]
[Monica]
You can't destroy this love I've found
Your silly games I won't allow
The boy is mine without a doubt
You might as well throw in the towel
[Brandy]
What makes you think that he wants you
When I'm the one that brought him to
The special place that's in my heart
He was my love right from the start
The title of this song, Take A Bow is defined as "to acknowledge applause by inclining the head, as of an artist after a performance." This fits perfectly in the context of the song: The protagonist is telling the second person (probably her boyfriend) they're over and she's leaving him after learning (probably) his cheating. She compares him to a brilliant actor who successfully convinced her to believe that he's faithful. Take A Bow (Rihanna)
How 'bout a round of applause?
Standin' ovation
Oh
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
You look so dumb right now
Standin' outside my house
Tryin' to apologize
You're so ugly when you cry
(Please)
Just cut it out
Don't tell me you're sorry cause you're not
Baby when I know you're only sorry you got caught
[Chorus]
But you put on quite a show
You really had me goin'
But now it's time to go
Curtains finally closin'
That was quite a show
Very entertaining
But it's over now
Go on and take a bow
Grab your clothes and get gone
(You better hurry up)
Before the sprinklers come on
Talkin' 'bout "Girl, I love you you're the one"
This just looks like a re-run
(Please)
What else is on?
And don't tell me you're sorry cause you're not
Baby when I know you're only sorry you got caught
[Chorus]
And the award for the best liar goes to you
For makin' me believe
That you could be
Faithful to me
Let's hear your speech out
Oh
The protagonist in the music video is the young wife of a wealthy but unfaithful husband. I think, however, a feeling like "I'm not the only one" is quite universal. It's not limited to a romantic relationship and could be applied to any kind of relationship. A child who has their baby sister or brother would also feel this way thinking they are not the only one for their parent(s). I believe everybody knows that kind of feeling. I'm sure I'm Not The Only One. I'm Not The Only One (Sam Smith)
You and me, we made a vow
For better or for worse
I can't believe you let me down
But the proof's in the way it hurts
For months on end I've had my doubts
Denying every tear
I wish this would be over now
But I know that I still need you here
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one
You've been so unavailable
Now sadly I know why
Your heart is unobtainable
Even though Lord knows you have mine
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one
I have loved you for many years
Maybe I am just not enough
You've made me realize my deepest fear
By lying and tearing us up
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one
You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done
But when you call me hazy
I know I'm not the only one
I know I'm not the only one
I know I'm not the only one
And I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, and I know, know
I know I'm not the only one
I solemnly declare that the underlying message of this song is "Be true to yourself and seize the day" and nothing else. Taking a look at the lyrics, it's clear that the protagonist is now in love with an amazing girl and completely infatuated wit her. It's so called "honeymoon period" in love. I think someone should tell him that the period doesn't always last very long. I'm sure he won't listen to anyone even if he is told, though. Any Way You Want It (Journey)
Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it
She loves to laugh
She loves to sing
She does everything
She loves to move
She loves to groove
She loves the lovin' things
Oh, all night, all night
Oh, every night
So hold tight, hold tight
Oh, baby, hold tight
Oh, she said
"Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it"
(any way you want it)
She said, "Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it"
I was alone, I never knew
What good love could do
Then we touched
Then we sang, about the lovin' things
Oh, all night, all night
Oh, every night
So hold tight, hold tight
Oh baby, hold tight
Oh, she said
"Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it"
(any way you want it)
I said "Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it"
She said, "Ooh, hold on, hold on, hold on"
Oh, she said
"Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it"
(anyway you want it
Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it
...
(any way you want it)
When the world is seeing yellow
I only see gray
When everybody sees the rainbow
I'm stuck in the rain
You take a little piece of me
Every time you leave
I don't think that I'll ever find that silver lining
Or a reason to smile
You know I used to paint such vibrant dreams
Now I'm colorblind colorblind
When did my heart
Get so full of the never mind never mind
Did you know
That you stole the only thing I needed
Always black and white in my eyes
I'm colorblind
Ain't it funny that you managed
To just wash away
Even pictures that you're not in
Have started to fade
I tried to play my favorite songs
But I can't sing along
The words don't feel the same
You've taken all the best things from me
And thrown them away
You know I used to paint such vibrant dreams
Now I'm colorblind colorblind
When did my heart
get so full of the never mind never mind
Did you know
That you stole the only thing I needed
Always black and white in my eyes
I'm colorblind
I'll wait
For roses to be red again
And I hate
That you took my blue from the ocean
Give me back green greens and goldens
My purples my blues you stole them
How long will I be broken
You know I used to paint such vibrant dreams
Now I'm colorblind colorblind
When did my heart
get so full of the never mind never mind
Did you know
That you stole the only thing I needed
Only black and white in my eyes
I'm colorblind
It's only black and white in my eyes
I'm colorblind
What a sad song. Listening to this song, anybody who knows she's lost her boyfriend July 2013 would feel very sorry for her.
They say when he died, she decided to put her debut album on hold, despite having already completed it the previous month. She talked with Sia Furler, an Australian singer song writer and wrote this song with her help. Michele herself admits it's a very very intense and personal song for her. If You Say So (Lea Michele)
It's been seven whole days, seven whole days
Since you paralyzed me
Seven whole days, seven whole days
Since you lost your fight
And I can't get the last words that you said
Can't get those words out of my head
Seven whole days, seven whole days and four words
And I can't get away from the burning pain
I lie awake
And the fallen hero haunts my thoughts
How could you leave me this way
It's been seven whole days without your embrace
I wanna see your face
I got some things to say
Was just a week ago
You said I love you girl
I said I love you more
And a breath, a pause, you said, if you say so
If you say so
If you say so
It's been seven whole days, seven whole days
Since I heard the phone ring
Seven whole days, seven whole days
Since I heard your voice
And I can't get the last words that you say
Can't get those words out of my head
It's been seven whole days, seven whole days of pure hurt
And I can't get away from the burning pain
I lie awake
And the fallen hero haunts my thoughts
How could you leave me this way
It's been seven whole days without your embrace
I wanna see your face
I got some things to say
Was just a week ago
You said I love you girl
I said I love you more
And a breath, a pause, you said, if you say so
If you say so
If you say so
I can't believe it's true
I keep looking for you
I check my phone and wait to hear from you in a crowded room
The joker is so cruel
And now I'll never know if all I've been told is just a lie so false
I thought we would grow old
Mirrors in the smoke
Left me here to choke
It's been seven whole days without your embrace
I wanna see your face
I got some things to say
Was just a week ago
You said I love you girl
I said I love you more
And a breath, a pause, you said, if you say so
If you say so
If you say so
例えばSantana Lopezを演じていたNaya Riveraは婚約者のBig Seanと共演したSorryという曲でデヴューしており,Diana Agronは以前取り上げたThe KillersのJust Another Girlのミュージック・ヴィデオに出演しています。 http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2014/01/just-another-girl-killers.html
Some of Glee cast seem to seek a solo career. For example, Naya Rivera who portrayed Santana Lopez on Glee released her debut single "Sorry" featuring her fiance Big Sean and Diana Agron appeared in the music video of Just Another Girl (The Killers) which I posted before. http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2014/01/just-another-girl-killers.html
As for the lyrics, knowing the tragic accident recently occurred to her, I think the protagonist should be a girl who's lost something very important to her life. Cannonball (Lea Michele)
(Audio)
Break it down
Break it down
Break it down
I was scared to death I was losing my mind
Break it down
I couldn't close my eyes I was pacing all night
I think I found the light out the end of the tunnel
I couldn't find the truth I was going under
But I won't hide inside
I gotta get out, gotta get out
Gotta get out, gotta get out
Lonely inside and light the fuse
Light it now, light it now, light it now
And now I will start living today
Today, today I close the door
I got this new beginning and I will fly
I'll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I'll fly, I'll fly, I'll fly like a cannonball
Freedom
I let go of fear and the peace came quickly
Freedom
I was in the dark and then it hit me
I chose suffering and pain in the falling rain
I know, I gotta get out into the world again
But I won't hide inside
I gotta get out, gotta get out
Gotta get out, gotta get out
Lonely inside and light the fuse
Light it now, light it now, light it now
And now I will start living today
Today, today I close the door
I got this new beginning and I will fly
I'll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I'll fly, I'll fly, I'll fly like a cannonball
Break it down
I was scared to death I was losing my mind
Break it down
I gotta get out into the world again
And now I will start living today
Today, today I close the door
I got this new beginning and I will fly
I'll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I'll fly, I'll fly, I'll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I'll fly, I'll fly, I'll fly like a cannonball
The girl appears in the video is Diana Agron who portrayed Quinn Fabrey, a cheerleader in a TV show Glee. Playing Brandon Flowers, she walks through some famous scenes of their music videos.
The protagonist's trying to convince himself he should let his girl go recalling his friends said "She's just another girl." He doesn't seem to be successful or convinced. Just Another Girl (The Killers)
[Verse 1]
Step out into the Indian dust
I can feel the cracks in my spirit
They're starting to bust
Drive by your house
Nobody's home
I'm trying to tell myself that I'm better off alone
[Chorus]
All my friends say I should move on
She's just another girl
Don't let her stick it to your heart so hard
And all my friends say it wasn't meant to be
And it's a great big world
She's just another girl (another girl)
[Verse 2]
I went to see a fortune teller, that was a trip
Maybe this confusion's got me losing my grip
I can't believe you're out there flying with someone else
Now Jason's getting married in the blink of an eye
I got an invitation but I didn't reply
Tell your little brother that we put down the gloves
And give him all of my love
[Chorus]
All my friends say I should move on
She's just another girl
Don't let her stick it to your heart so hard
And all my friends say it wasn't meant to be
And it's a great big world
She's just another girl (another girl)
[Bridge]
I could be reeling them in left and right
Something's got a hold on me, tonight
Well maybe all of my friends should confront
The fact that I don't want another girl
All of my friends say I should move on
All of my friends say
All of my friends say
All of my friends say
She's just another girl
Now why can't I sleep at night
And why don't the moon look right
It sailed off but the TV's on
And it's a great big world
[Outro]
She's just another girl,
Don't let her stick it to your heart so hard
She's just another girl
All my friends say she's just another girl
Another girl
あのSomeone Like YouやSomebody That I Used To Knowと同様に,タイトルのJust Another Girlを見ただけでこの曲が「振られ男の恨み節」だとある程度予想がつきます。
I have a rule for my blog that I don't pick up a song which is already translated and featured in an episode of Glee even if I love the song very much. It's because I think watching the episode (with subtitle) would largely affect my translation.
However, every rule has an exception as you know. Since I haven't watched the episode in which this song is used yet, I believe it'd be OK for me to pick this up this time. Marry You (Bruno Mars)
It's a beautiful night, we're looking for something dumb to do
Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you
Is it the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice
Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you
Well I know this little chapel on the boulevard
We can go
No one will know
Oh c'mon girl
Who cares if we're trashed
Got a pocket full of cash we can blow
Shots of Patron
And it's on girl
Don't say no no no no no
Just say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
And we'll go go go go go
If you're ready, like I'm ready
'Cause it's a beautiful night, we're looking for something dumb to do
Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you
Is it the look in your eyes or is it this dancing juice
Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you
Oh
I'll go get a ring
Let the choir bell sing like ooh
So what you wanna do
Lets just run girl
If we wake up and you want to break up
That's cool
No I won't blame you
It was fun girl
Don't say no no no no no
Just say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
And we'll go go go go go
If you're ready, like I'm ready
'Cause it's a beautiful night, we're looking for something dumb to do
Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you
Is it the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice
Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you
Just say I do
Tell me right now baby
Tell me right now baby, baby
Just say I do
Tell me right now baby
Tell me right now baby, baby
Oh
It's a beautiful night, we're looking for something dumb to do
Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you
Is it the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice
Who cares baby, I think I wanna marry you
When a cellphone was nothing but an imagination, the word, 'telephone' represented a land-line phone. In those days, not answering a phone call meant either the other party wasn't home or they ignored the call no matter who made it.
Nowadays, a cellphone instantly tells us who the caller is. Now that (not answering your call) probably means they can't answer it for some reason, such as their phone is out of service and they're not around it. Otherwise, it means they don't want to pick up YOUR call. I think it would make us feel much lonelier All By Myself (Eric Carmen)
When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
Living alone
I think of all the friends I've known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody's home
All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself any more
All by myself
Don't want to live all by myself any more
Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure
All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself any more
All by myself
Don't want to live all by myself any more
When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself any more
All by myself
Don't want to live all by myself any more
All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself any more
All by myself
Don't want to live all by myself any more
All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself any more
(But when I dial the telephone, Nobody's home)」の箇所が哀しい。
You've Lost That Loving Feelingの他にこの曲が上がってきました。
When I searched for a video of You've Lost That Loving Feeling for my blog entry on YouTube, using a keyword "bill medley" this song came up as well. It's from the soundtrack of an American film Dirty Dancing (1987).
It's a so-called boy-meets-girl story. A girl from a wealthy family who spends a summer at a resort meets a boy who is a dance instructor there. They fall in love but her parents and his boss are not happy about it. In the meanwhile they entered a dance competition there and... that kind of story. (I've Had) The Time of My Life (Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes)
Now I've had the time of my life
No, I never felt this way before
Yes I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I owe it all to you
I've been waiting for so long
Now I've finally found someone to stand by me
We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical fantasy
Now with passion in our eyes
There's no way we could disguise it secretly
So we take each others' hand
'Cause we seem to understand the urgency
Just remember
You're the one thing I can't get enough of
So I'll tell you something
This could be love because
I've had the time of my life
No, I never felt this way before
Yes I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
Hey, baby
Hey, baby
With my body and soul
I want you more than you'll ever know
So we'll just let it go
Don't be afraid to lose control
Yes, I know what's on your mind
When you say, "Stay with me tonight"
Just remember
You're the one thing I can't get enough of
So I'll tell you something
This could be love because
I've had the time of my life
No, I never felt this way before
Yes I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I've searched through every open door
'Til I found the true truth
And I owe it all to you
I've had the time of my life
No, I never felt this way before
Yes I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
I've had the time of my life
No, I never felt this way before
Yes I swear, it's the truth
And I owe it all to you
'Cause I've had the time of my life
And I've searched through every open door
'Til I found what is true
And I owe it all to you
映画のタイトルが「ダーティ・ダンシング(Dirty Dancing)」である上,歌詞の中に「(With my body and soul, I want you more than you'll ever know, So we'll just let it go, Don't be afraid to lose control)」などという箇所が登場するので,どれほどエロいのかと思いますが,幸か不幸かさにあらず。
Glee Season 5
An episode of Glee Season 5 brought me to this song. I heard a cover sung in the episode first. It sounded much more folk-country ballad. I was a bit surprised to find the original sounded much more rock and uplifting.
They say that Springsteen wrote this about the inspirational power of Rock music. It came to represent his friendship with members of his band. I'm sure that's the reason it's featured in the episode.
Part of the chorus provided the title for Jean-Claude Van Damme's first movie, No Retreat, No Surrender. The original title was "Brothers Under The Bridges." No Surrender (Bruce Springsteen)
We busted out of class had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes and follow your dreams down
We made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat no surrender
Now young faces grow sad and old and hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home across the open yards
Well maybe we could cut someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars
Blood brothers in the stormy night with a vow to defend
No retreat no surrender
Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
you say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath peaceful skies in my lover's bed
with a wide open country in my eyes
and these romantic dreams in my head
Somebody That I Used To Knowの邦題が「失恋サムバディ」なのはまだいいとしても,凄腕の刺客のWe're Never Ever Getting Back Togetherが「私たちは絶対に絶対にヨリを戻したりしない」と聞いては「直訳にもほどがあるだろ!」
