薬物中毒の人が口を揃えていうことのひとつが，最初はクスリをやるとものすごく効果があって幸せになれたが次第に効き目が薄れ，逆にやらないでいると前は普通にできたことさえできなくなりそのために薬が止められなくなるということです。

恋愛関係の場合は効果が薄れるとむしろ別れやすく（＝止めやすく）なるのでそういう点では薬物とは逆なのかもしれません。

ただバンドによるとこの曲のタイトルは実際のスパニッシュ・サハラとは何の関係もなく単に悪夢のような荒れ果てた土地をイメージしたものらしい。また曲自体はトラウマを克服することや，その過程で怒りを処理できないことを歌ったもののようです。

ところで具体的な記述があまりなく解釈が聞き手に委ねられている感のあるこの歌詞ですが，この曲は2015に発表されたヴィデオ・ゲームの「Life is Strange」の最終章に使われているようです。

この曲が流れるかどうかはどのエンディングになるかによって決まるため，必ずしもプレイヤー全員がこの曲を耳にするわけではないものの，そのゲームをプレイした上でこの曲を聞けばおそらく歌詞の意味もより一層の明快さを持って迫ってくるのかもしれません。

聞くところによるとこの曲はその時の精神状態によって世の中の味方が変わることを歌ったもので，父親（養父）が突然亡くなり生きる意味を見出せなくなったことを語っているそうです。

それはともかく一体どれほど「けしからん」内容なのかとある種の憤りを感じながらヴィデオを見たものの，実際には下着姿の女性が窓辺で踊っているだけの内容で，むしろ何故か別の種類の憤りが湧いてきました。

思うに両者を隔てる条件のひとつが「想像力」の有無で，何も考えていないように見えて実はそこに入念な計画があるのが前者で，本当に何も考えていないのが後者ではないでしょうか？

そういう意味で言えば，これといった計画もなく「もう不安は消えちゃって，もう何も怖くない」と言う主人公には一抹の不安を感じてしまいます。

（余談）

実は人間は無意識のうちに自分で「あるべき自分の姿」を作り上げており，読む本からファッション，そして食べるものまで，改めて考えてみると「その姿」に合わせていることが少なくなく，そういう意味で言えば「いつもの自分ならこんなことはしないはず」という思いは気づいていない抑圧の裏返しなのかもしれません。

私にはこの曲のタイトル「Eat That Up, It's Good for You」はイヤがる子どもに食事させようとしている母親のセリフに聞こえます。
To me the song title, 'Eat That Up, It's Good for You' sounds like a mother is telling her child to eat while the child isn't willing to do so.
