Marty Balinは当時同じスタジオの別の部屋で録音していたTony Bennettを念頭においてこの曲を作ったらしい。きっと素晴らしいものになったと思うだけに彼が歌わなかったのが残念です。

大抵の賃貸契約には退去時に「原状回復」にして返却するという条件がついており，壁や床に傷をつけてしまうと多額の修繕費用を取られるため，借り手のほとんどは家具の配置を変える程度のことしかできません。

自分がいよいよ死ぬという時に「嘆き悲しんだり（don't want nobody to mourn）」されたくないと言うこの主人公。それはそうでしょうがだからといって喜ばれるのもイヤだと思います。
The narrator says they "don't want nobody to mourn" when their time of dying.  I know they don't but they don't want other to rejoice either.

そうい意味で言えばこのViolet Gibsonの場合がまさにその「確信犯」的行為と言えるでしょう。

この曲に登場する「wren（ミソサザイ）」は，小型で茶褐色の羽毛を持スズメ目の鳥と，19世紀に一般社会の外側で生きていた女性の一団の双方を指しています。

歌詞の中で「天国に行っちまったヤツもいりゃ（Some of them fell into Heaven）」と語る主人公ですが天国というのは意に反して行く場所なのでしょうか？そうかもしれません。不快なことがなにひとつないのが天国という場所であるならそれは非常に退屈でしょうから。
In the song, the narrator says, "Some of them fell into Heaven."  Is Heaven a place to fall into?  Maybe.  If there's nothing unpleasant in Heaven, it would be extremely boring.

When I Get My Hands On You ザ・ニュー・ベースメント・テープス (The New Basement Tapes)

タイトルを見た時はてっきり仕返しの曲だと思っていました。「get one's hands on someone」という熟語があり，乱暴に人の体に触るという意味だと思ったからです。
When I saw the song title, I believed it's a song about retribution thinking "get ones hands on someone" is an idiom which means touching someone with the threat of violence.

硬化は動脈だけでなく心にも起こるのかもしれません。このブログを始めた約13年前は今よりもずっと心に響く曲が多かった気がしますが，この曲はその数少ない例外です。

（余談）

先日喫煙所のそばを通りかかりふと自分が子どもの頃は喫煙がまだ普通のことでありシャワートイレも今ほど一般的ではなかったことを思い出し，そういった「負」の情報がすっぽり抜け落ちているからこそ子ども時代の記憶がより一層輝いて見えるのではないかと思いました。

無論この曲の主人公の体験している「別れ」はリードで述べたような死別ではなくよくある普通の別れなのかもしれませんが，それでも仮に「あの世」なるものが存在するとすれば，やはり最終的にはそこで「いつか一緒になれる」のは間違いありません。
