大抵の賃貸契約には退去時に「原状回復」にして返却するという条件がついており，壁や床に傷をつけてしまうと多額の修繕費用を取られるため，借り手のほとんどは家具の配置を変える程度のことしかできません。

おそらくこの主人公が「心は自分の盾だから下ろして心を開くとかそんなことは絶対しない，
失敗するのが怖いからやってみるってことさえしない」というのも，主人公にとって人生がまだ「借り物」であるという認識だからではないでしょうか？

自分がいよいよ死ぬという時に「嘆き悲しんだり（don't want nobody to mourn）」されたくないと言うこの主人公。それはそうでしょうがだからといって喜ばれるのもイヤだと思います。

我々は日常生活で「確信犯」という言葉を「悪いと知りつつ敢えてする行為」という意味で使いがちですが「確信犯」という言葉は厳密には「自分の道徳・宗教・政治・経済などの理念を確信して実行される犯罪であり，己の信念に基づいて実行される犯罪」です。

そうい意味で言えばこのViolet Gibsonの場合がまさにその「確信犯」的行為と言えるでしょう。

この曲に登場する「wren（ミソサザイ）」は，小型で茶褐色の羽毛を持スズメ目の鳥と，19世紀に一般社会の外側で生きていた女性の一団の双方を指しています。

歌詞の中で「天国に行っちまったヤツもいりゃ（Some of them fell into Heaven）」と語る主人公ですが天国というのは意に反して行く場所なのでしょうか？そうかもしれません。不快なことがなにひとつないのが天国という場所であるならそれは非常に退屈でしょうから。
In the song, the narrator says, "Some of them fell into Heaven."  Is Heaven a place to fall into?  Maybe.  If there's nothing unpleasant in Heaven, it would be extremely boring.

「やかんを火にかける（Put the kettle on）」は文字通りヤカンをガスコンロに置くという意味ですが，メタファーとしてはお茶を淹れるという意味です。

事故というものは起こるものですし場合によっては予想だにしない起こり方をします。この曲については1980年にMark David Chapmanに殺害されたJohn Lennonのことだと考える人もいます。

タイトルを見た時はてっきり仕返しの曲だと思っていました。「get one's hands on someone」という熟語があり，乱暴に人の体に触るという意味だと思ったからです。
When I saw the song title, I believed it's a song about retribution thinking "get ones hands on someone" is an idiom which means touching someone with the threat of violence.

（余談）

先日喫煙所のそばを通りかかりふと自分が子どもの頃は喫煙がまだ普通のことでありシャワートイレも今ほど一般的ではなかったことを思い出し，そういった「負」の情報がすっぽり抜け落ちているからこそ子ども時代の記憶がより一層輝いて見えるのではないかと思いました。

無論この曲の主人公の体験している「別れ」はリードで述べたような死別ではなくよくある普通の別れなのかもしれませんが，それでも仮に「あの世」なるものが存在するとすれば，やはり最終的にはそこで「いつか一緒になれる」のは間違いありません。

タイトルの「Northern Sky」は憂鬱でパッとしない主人公の人生を指すメタファーでしょう。「北」あるいは「北方」という言葉をさほど楽しくはない事に結び付けるのはNick Drakeや我々の住む北半球ではさほど難しくありません。
I think the title Northern Sky is a metaphor for the narrator's gloomy and miserable life.  In the northern hemisphere where Nick Drake and we live, it's not very hard to associate words like north and northern with something less cheerful.

今日アイルランドにも「wake」と呼ばれるものが存在することを知りました。大雑把に言うと日本の「通夜」に相当するもので，葬儀の前に故人のために人々が集まりその故人について語り合う機会です。
