I have heard that every one of us has a special music running deep inside our soul and whatever music we love in our lives has something in common with it. I always translate English lyrics into Japanese, wondering what my music sounds like.
What makes an item so rare and us appreciate it more? It's probably availability. Things you can get easily are not appreciated very much. Don't Know Why (I Just Do) (Frank Sinatra)
[Chorus] I don't know why I love you like I do I don't why, but I do I don't know why you thrill me like you do I don't know why, but you do
[Refrain] You never seem to want my romancing The only time you hold me is when we're dancing
[Chorus] I don't know why I love you like I do I don't know why, but I do
[Instrumental Break]
[Refrain] You never seem to want my romancing The only time you hold me is when we're dancing
[Chorus] I don't know why I love you like I do I don't know why, but I do
It's not very common that you see people who physically fence in others. Psychologically, however, we all do it to others. Don't Fence Me In (Bing Crosby)
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above Don't fence me in Let me ride through the wide open country that I love Don't fence me in
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees Send me off forever, but I ask you please Don't fence me in
Just turn me loose Let me straddle my old saddle Underneath the Western skies
On my Cayuse Let me wander over yonder Till I see the mountains rise
I want to ride to the ridge where the West commences And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses And I can't look at hovels and I can't stand fences Don't fence me in
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies Don't fence me in Let me ride through the wide country that I love Don't fence me in
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees Send me off forever but I ask you please Don't fence me in!
Just turn me loose Let me straddle my old saddle Underneath the Western skies Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
On my Cayuse Let me wander over yonder Till I see the mountains rise Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba
I want to ride to the ridge where the West commences And gaze at the moon 'til I lose my senses I can't look at hovels and I can't stand fences Don't fence me in
I heard Harry Belafonte once explained that this song is about a Jamaican pimp promoting her girl to prospective customers. Is it true? Jump In The Line (Lord Kitchener / Harry Belafonte)

Generally speaking, this song is labelled as a cover but a substantial part of the lyrics has changed in this cover. The original song was a blues and played as such. This is played as a country/rock song. Cotton Fields (Lead Belly / The Beach Boys)
When I was a little bitty baby My mama done rock me in the cradle In them old cotton fields back home
It was back in Louisiana Just about a mile from Texarkana In them old cotton fields back home
Let me tell you now well, I got me in a fix I caught a nail in my tire doing lickitey splits I had to walk a long, long way to town
I came upon a nice old man well, he had a hat on Wait a minute, mister, can you give me some directions? I'm gonna want to be right off for home
When I was a little bitty baby My mama done rock me in the cradle In them old cotton fields back home
It was back in Louisiana Just about a mile from Texarkana In them old cotton fields back home
Don't care if them cotton balls get rotten When I got you, baby, who needs cotton? In them old cotton fields back home
Brother, only one thing more that's gonna warm you A summer's day out in California It's gonna be those cotton fields back home
It was back in Louisiana Just about a mile from Texarkana Give me them cotton fields (It was back in Louisiana) Let me hear it for the cotton fields (Just about a mile from Texarkana) You know that there's just no place like home
Oh, boy, it sure feels good to breathe the air back home You shoulda seen their faces when they seen how I grown In them old cotton fields back home
Some people say this song might be inspired by the 1945 film "Brief Encounter" in which a married woman meets a married man at a restaurant and having an affair with him. Blondie haven't commented about this and I don't know if it's true but the story of the film coincides with lyrics perfectly. Dreaming (Dreaming)
[Verse 1]
When I met you in the restaurant
You could tell I was no debutante
You asked me what's my pleasure
A movie or a measure?
I'll have a cup of tea and tell you of my
[Chorus]
Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free
[Verse 2]
I don't want to live on charity
Pleasure's real or is it fantasy?
Reel to reel is living rarity
People stop and stare at me
We just walk on by - we just keep on dreaming
[Bridge]
Feet feet, walking a two mile
Meet meet, meet me at the turnstile
I never met him, I'll never forget him
Dream, dream, even for a little while
Dream, dream, filling up an idle hour
Fade away, radiate
[Verse 3]
I sit by and watch the river flow
I sit by and watch the traffic go
Imagine something of your very own
Something you can have and hold
I'd build a road in gold just to have some
[Chorus]
Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free
Dreaming, dreaming is free
When we gossip, we often speak low. It's unusual for us to speak aloud about other's secrets but why? I think it's because we know we shouldn't. We know gossiping is not something we're very proud of. Whispering Grass (The Ink Spots)
Why do you whisper, green grass?
Why tell the trees what ain't so?
Whispering grass
The trees don't have to know, no no
Why tell them all your secrets
Who kissed there long ago
Whispering grass
The trees don't need to know
Don't you tell it to the breeze
For she will tell the birds and bees
And everyone will know
Because you told the blabbering trees
Yes, you told them once before
It's no secret anymore
Why tell them all the old things
They're buried under the snow
Whispering grass, don't tell the trees
'Cause the trees don't need to know
[Spoken]
Now, don't you tell it to the breeze
'Cause she'll run 'n' tell it to the birds and bees
And everyone will know
Because you done told the blabberin' trees
Yes you did, ya told 'em once before
So that's why it ain't no secret anymore
[Singing]
Why tell them all the old things
They're buried under the snow
Whispering grass, don't tell the trees
'Cause the trees don't need to know
This song was released in 1945 at the end of the WWII. The narrator is a person who's been long waiting for someone they love to come home. Considering the release time, it's safe to say they're sent to the battlefield. It's Been A Long Long Time (Harry James and His Orchestra)
Kiss me once, then kiss me twice, then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Haven't felt like this, my dear, since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time
You'll never know how many dreams I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once, then kiss me twice, then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Ah, kiss me once, then kiss me twice, then kiss me once again
It's been a long time
Haven't felt like this, my dear, since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time
You'll never know how many dreams I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you
So kiss me once, then kiss me twice, then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Long, long time
Her voice triggered something deep inside of my soul such as despair and sadness, making me feel uneasy. I was standing there and kept saying to myself "Wow...it's just...." when I heard it for the first time. Trouble So Hard (Vera Hall)
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Don't nobody know my troubles but God
Don't nobody know my troubles but God
Went down the hill
Other day
My soul got happy
And stayed all day
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Don't nobody know my troubles but God
Don't nobody know my troubles but God
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Went in the room
Didn't stay long
Looked on the bed and
Brother was dead
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Don't nobody know my troubles but God
Don't nobody know my troubles but God
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard
Famous songs sometimes play a trick on our memory. This song was played in an American film Casablanca (1942). Whenever I hear it, it always conjures up the last scene in which the two protagonists are saying goodbye at the airport. That makes me believe I have watched it before but actually I didn't. As Time Goes By (Dooley Wilson)
You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by
And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs never out of date
Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate
Woman need man and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs never out of date
Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate
Woman need man and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by
In war times, keeping up people's morale high is essential to the administration. They use every possible way to ensure it. Churchill's famous speech, "We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender." is said to have greatly contributed to lift the morale of British people. (There'll Be Bluebirds Over) White Cliffs of Dover (Vera Lynn)
[Chorus]
There'll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow, just you wait and see
[Verse 1]
I'll never forget the people I met
Braving those angry skies
I remember well as the shadows fell
The light of hope in their eyes
And though I'm far away
I still can hear them say
"Thumbs up!"
For when the dawn comes up
[Chorus]
There'll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow, just you wait and see
There'll be love and laughter
And peace ever after
Tomorrow, when the world is free
[Bridge]
The shepherd will tend his sheep
The valley will bloom again
And Jimmy will go to sleep
In his own little room again
[Chorus]
There'll be bluebirds over
The white cliffs of Dover
Tomorrow, just you wait and see
I have believed the opening of this song was "Everybody loves somebody SOMEHOW" not 'sometime'. So I thought this song's about an innocent but silly infatuation or crush in our teens seen from the perspective of an adult. Everybody Loves Somebody (Dean Martin)
Everybody loves somebody sometime
Everybody falls in love somehow
Something in your kiss just told me
My sometime is now
Everybody finds somebody someplace
Theres no tellin' where love may appear
Something in my heart keeps sayin'
My someplace is here
If I had it in my power
I'd arrange for every girl to have your charm
Then every minute every hour
Every boy would find what I found in your arms
Everybody loves somebody sometime
And although my dream was overdue
Your love made it well worth waiting
For someone like you
(If I had it in my power)
I'd arrange for every girl to have your charm
(Then every minute every hour)
Every boy would find what I found in your arms
Everybody loves somebody sometime
And although my dream was overdue
Your love made it well worth waiting
For someone like you
(Everybody loves somebody sometime)
Pete Seegerは,元々は「We WILL overcome」だったこの曲の出だしの部分をわずかに変えて「We SHALL overcome」にしました。
A single small change sometimes gives a huge impact on the whole. Pete Seeger changed the opening line which was originally "We WILL overcome" slightly to "We SHALL overcome". He downplays his contribution to the song but to me the change seems to make a big difference. We Shall Overcome (Pete Seeger)
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart,
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day.
We'll walk hand in hand,
We'll walk hand in hand,
We'll walk hand in hand, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart,
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day.
We shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace, some day.
Oh, deep in my heart,
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day.
We are not afraid,
We are not afraid,
We are not afraid, TODAY
Oh, deep in my heart,
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day.
The whole wide world around
The whole wide world around
The whole wide world around some day
Oh, deep in my heart,
I do believe
We shall overcome, some day.
"You're nobody til somebody loves you", the narrator says. I think what they're trying to say is that love is much greater than money. That could be true but how can he be so sure about it? People say money makes the world go round and ...
Erm... do family members count? You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You (Dean Martin)
You're nobody til somebody loves you
You're nobody til somebody cares
You may be king, you may possess the world and it's gold
But gold won't bring you happiness when you're growing old
The world still is the same, you never change it
As sure as the stars shine above
You're nobody til somebody loves you
So find yourself somebody to love
The world still is the same, you never change it
As sure as the stars shine above
Well, you're nobody til somebody loves you
So find yourself somebody to love
I knew the song. I heard it on TV so many times and believed it's a classical one. I've never imagined it's a piece written by one of jazz legends, Cole Porter. Despite quite passionate and positive lyrics, the melody sounds sad and hence it feels to represent all about love to me somehow. Song starts about 0:45. So In Love (k. d. lang)
Strange dear, but true dear
When I'm close to you, dear
The stars fill the sky
So in love with you am I
Even without you
My arms fold about you
You know, darling why
So in love with you am I
In love with the night mysterious
The night when you first were there
In love with my joy delirious
When I knew that you could care
So taunt me, and hurt me
Deceive me, desert me
I'm yours till I die
So in love
So in love
So in love with you, my love, am I
I heard this song in a TV show about old home movies. Those who appeared in these movies were ordinary people just like us. They were running, singing and smiling in them. I don't know why but I got a bit emotional watching them. Again (Doris Day)
Again, this couldn't happen again
This is that once in a lifetime
This is the thrill divine
What's more, this never happened before
Though I have prayed for a lifetime
That such as you would suddenly be mine
Mine to hold as I'm holding you now and yet never so near
Mine to have when the now and the here disappear
What matters, dear, for
When this doesn't happen again
We'll have this moment forever
But never, never again (never, never)
We'll have this moment for ever
But never, never again (never, never)
At first I didn't understand what this title meant. Yes, I know 'I love you' part but what's 'sentimental reasons'? How can you 'love' someone for anything other than 'sentimental reasons'? Of course, not. You can't if you truly 'love' the person. That means if you can, that means you don't truly love them. (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons
I love you for sentimental reasons
I hope you do believe me
I'll give you my heart
I love you and you alone were meant for me
Please give your loving heart to me
And say we'll never part
I think of you every morning
Dream of you every night
Darling, I'm never lonely
Whenever you are in sight
I love you for sentimental reasons
I hope you do believe me
I've given you my heart
I love you for sentimental reasons
I hope you do believe me
I've given you my heart
Although this is widely recognized as the signature song of Etta James, hers isn't the original. Written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren in 1941 for a musical film Orchestra Wives and sung by Ray Eberle and Pat Friday was the original. It's performed live by Beyonce for President Obama and first lady's first dance in 2009, At Last (Etta James)
At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over and life is like a song, oh yeah
At last the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up clover the night I looked at you
I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill I've never known, oh yeah
You smiled, you smiled oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in Heaven
For you are mine at last
歌詞に登場する「ねえこのお酒,一体何が入ってるの?(Say, what's in this drink?)」
http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2011/09/ill-be-there-jackson-5.html
As for this song, recently some people started criticizing it as a song about date rape, saying a line like "Say, what's in this drink?" was hinting it . To me, however, it seems a bit far-fetched because I think songs are intertwined with the culture in which they're written and shouldn't be discussed independently.
For example, I'll Be There (The Jackson 5) which I posted before was definitely recognized as a sweet and caring love song when it's released in 1970s. (Otherwise people wouldn't let 11-year-old Michael Jackson sing it.) http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2011/09/ill-be-there-jackson-5.html
Now it's often listed as one of stalker songs. Some song acquire a whole new meaning as the time passes. Baby It's Cold Outside (Louis Armstrong)
I really can't stay
(But baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away
(But baby, it's cold outside)
This evening has been
(Been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice
(I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start to worry
(Beautiful, what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor
(Listen to the fireplace roar)
So really I'd better scurry
(Beautiful, please don't hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more
(Put some records on while I pour)
The neighbors might think
(Baby, it's bad out there)
Say, what's in this drink?
(No cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how
(Your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell
(I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
I ought to say no, no, no, sir
(Mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried
(What's the sense in hurting my pride?)
I really can't stay
(Baby, don't hold out)
Oh, but it's cold outside
I simply must go
(But baby, it's cold outside)
The answer is no
(But baby, it's cold outside)
This welcome has been
(How lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm
(Look out the window at that storm)
My sister will be suspicious
(Gosh, your lips look delicious
My brother will be there at the door
(Waves upon a tropical shore)
My maiden aunt's mind is vicious
(Ooh, your lips are delicious)
But maybe just a cigarette more
(Never such a blizzard before)
I've got to get home
(But baby, you'll freeze out there)
Say, lend me your comb
(It's up to your knees out there)
You've really been grand
(I thrill when you touch my hand)
But don't you see
(How can you do this thing to me?)
There's bound to be talk tomorrow
(Think of my life long sorrow)
At least there will be plenty implied
(If you caught pneumonia and died)
I really can't stay
(Get over that old doubt)
Oh, but it's cold outside
(If only in my dreams)」で終わっているからです。
This song was released around Christmas in 1943. Many of us think it's a classic Christmas song describing the anticipation of spending Christmas holidays with person (or people) the protagonist loves. That's not true. The song lyrics end with a line, "If only in my dreams,"
The song was written from a perspective of a soldier who served overseas during WW2 writing a letter to his family. So it's not very likely for the protagonist to be home for Christmas.
This song haunted me yesterday. It played over and over again and never stopped in my head throughout the day. So probably that could be a sign. I don't know what the sign is for, though. I'll Be Home For Christmas (Bing Crosby)
(Frank Sinatra Cover)
I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
If only in my dreams
I should thank Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga for their duet which brought me to this song. As it's such a well-known song, I must have heard it before. It was when I heard their duet on YouTube that I realized the beauty of the song. Some artists get more media attention from what they do in their private lives than what they do on stage. I guess Lady Gaga is one of them. It's a shame that people are often unaware that actually she CAN sing. Nature Boy (Nat King Cole)
(Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga cover)
There was a boy
A very strange, enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far
Very far, over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise was he
And then one day,
One magic day he passed my way
While we spoke of many things
Fools and Kings
This he said to me:
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return".
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return".
[Instrumental]
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return".
