若い頃人が自分のところへ話をしにくるのは助言が欲しいからだと思っていましたがそれが全くの誤りであることがわかりました。ただ自分の話に耳を傾けて理解してもらいたいだけでした。

（余談）

長い間そのことに気がつかず，自分なりに知恵を絞って「こうすればよいのではないか？」「この方法を試してみれば」と相手に告げても最終的に相手から「でも・・・」と言われてそれで終わり。

そのたびに自分が役立たず思えて非常にストレスが溜まりましたが，ある時「実は助言は求められていないのではないか？」と気がつき目からウロコが落ちました。

ロバート・ガルブレイス (Robert Galbraith)という犯罪小説の作家をご存知でしょうか？おそらくご存じないと思われますがあのハリー・ポッター・シリーズを書いたJ・K・ローリング (J.K. Rowling)はご存知でしょう？
Have you ever heard of a name Robert Galbraith who is a crime fiction writer?  Maybe not but you surely know J. K. Rowling who wrote the Harry Potter series, don't you?

（余談）

通常カヴァーというものはオリジナルの後に出てくるものですが，この曲の場合はその辺りが若干異なっています。

元々EmbraceのDanny McNamaraとColdplayのChris Martinは大変親しかったようですが，当時アルバムがヒットせずバンド活動だけでは生活を維持できず，メンバーの中にはアルバイトで食いつなぐ人もいたEmbraceの窮状を見かねたChris Martinが「あまりColdplayっぽくないから」という理由でこの曲を提供してくれたそうです。おかげでEmbraceは無事ヒットを出して返り咲くことができたのだとか。

そういう訳でこの曲のオリジナルは2002年にライヴで発表されたColdplayの曲ですが，シングルとして発売されたのはEmbraceのカヴァーの方が先で2004年，その後でColdplayもシングルTalkのB面としてオリジナルが発売したようです。

リードで述べたRobert Galbraithは実はあのJ. K. Rowlingの別名義です。彼女も犯罪小説というジャンルがハリー・ポッター・シリーズの作風にあまりふさわしくないと考えたためにこの別名義にしたのかもしれずそういった点でこの曲と似た背景があるような気がします。

ミュージック・ヴィデオのメッセージはかなり明確であり「本当の年齢がいくつであっても子どものように生きよう」ということでしょう。

この曲は鬱について語っていると言われていますが，私がこの曲を聞いて思い出したのはかつて知人から聞いた精神病院での生活でした。
They say this song is about depression.  When I heard it, I thought it's about a life in a mental institution in which a person I know was once put in.

（余談）

ある人間の人生が「毎日が本当に同じことの繰り返し」かどうかはその「データ圧縮」の程度で決まるので，我々から見れば「地位も名誉もある人々と毎日のように会って刺激的な人生を送っている」ようなセレブの生活も，強めの「圧縮」をかけてしまえばそれ自体が「毎日が本当に同じことの繰り返し」です。

Watching the music video below, you may say it's boring and cheesy.  Probably so but it's kind of relaxing as well to follow a story in which everything goes as you expect without any twist.

この曲は「ヤング・スーパーマン（Smallville）」「グレイズ・アナトミー（Grey’s Anatomy）」「ヴァンパイア・ダイアリーズ （The Vampire Diaries）」そして「コールドケース （Cold Case）」等々の様々なTVドラマに使われているようです。

それはともかく「この時計こんなに速く進んでたっけ？（This clock never seemed so alive）」の下りに唸りました。無論このヴィデオのような状況ではなく，試験に臨んだ際に残り時間が減っていくという意味ですが。

歌詞に登場する「蝶々(butterflies)」は一体何を表しているのでしょうか？いわゆる「遊び人」を指しているという人によると，「好きな人はいつだって，蝶々みたいにフラフラと遊びまわる人ばかり (this girl only sleeps with butterflies)」の下りは，主人公が恋愛関係に真面目になれない相手ばかりをいつも好きになるという意味だそうです。

「今日は大変な一日だった」と言えるのは，その一日が終わった時なので，その内容とは裏腹に，この表現からはなにかしらポジティヴなものを感じます。その一方で，人が「今日はいい日だった」というのを聞くと，わずかに不吉なものを感じてしまいます。おそらく「嵐の前の静けさ」的なものを感じてしまうからでしょう。が，単にホラーやアニメの見過ぎなのかもしれません。

（余談）

こちらを始めた頃，この曲を一度取り上げようとしたものの，その内容のあまりの難解さに1年ほど寝かした後にお蔵入りにしたことを思い出しました。あれから6年半が経ち，多少はマシになったような気がするものの，難解さは相変わらずです。

それはともかく，リードで述べた件は巷では「死亡フラグ」と呼ばれ，既にある種のカテゴリーとして成立しているような気がしますが，その後に続く展開を予想させるという意味で言えば，これは現代における「枕詞」と言えるのではないでしょうか？

（余談２）

2022年に再び修正しました。この曲の歌詞がわかりにくいのはおそらく間接話法において「一人称（I）」と「二人称（you）」をそれが何を指すのか明確にしないまま混在して使っているためだと思われます。

Verse1の「They tell me your blue skies fade to gray, They tell me your passion's gone away, And I don't need no carryin' on」を例に取りましょう。

果たしてこれは「They tell me that your blue skies fade to gray」なのか「They tell me "your blue skies fade to gray"」なのか？

前者の場合は登場人物が3人以上いて，話者である主人公（I）と相手（you）そしてそれ以外の人間（they）であり「青空に陰りが出た」のは相手ですが，後者の場合にそこに相手の姿はないので「青空に陰りが出た」のは主人公です。その後で「And I don't need no carryin' on」と歌っていることを考えあわせれば猶更です。

したがってこれを主人公が自分自身（you）に対して歌っていると考えれば問題なく理解できるのですが，その後で「So where is the passion when you need it the most?, Oh you and I, You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost」と主人公以外の他者を感じさせる歌詞になってしまっているため再び疑問が生じてしまいます。しかもミュージック・ヴィデオの作りが話者≠相手を思わせる作りになっています。

「不運がいつまでも続くわけじゃない。気にせず進んでいけ」というメッセージ自体は明確でありながら，歌詞の構成やミュージック・ヴィデオなどによって細かい部分がわかりにくく，正確なところはなかなか掴みにくいこの曲ですが，今回2022年の更新で一応完結したと考えたいと思います。

対戦相手との力の差がありすぎると，負けを認めるのもさほど難しくないような気がします。この曲の場合，主人公の「敵」に弱点があるとは思えないので，自分では相手にならないことが主人公にもわかっているようです。
I think it's not so hard for us to admit a defeat when the opponent is far more powerful for us to beat.  In this song, the person the narrator is talking about seems to be flawless.  She knows she'd never be good enough to rival the person.
