この曲は以前取り上げた「august」と「cardigan」とともにテイラー・スウィフトのいわゆる「ティーンエイジ三部作」のひとつであり，3人の10代の主人公たちの三角関係を描いています。

この主人公がとっているいわゆる「イヤならやめろ」戦略は通常上手くいくものですが，差し出されたもの（it）を相手側が評価していない場合はその限りではありません。

今日アイルランドにも「wake」と呼ばれるものが存在することを知りました。大雑把に言うと日本の「通夜」に相当するもので，葬儀の前に故人のために人々が集まりその故人について語り合う機会です。

（余談）

この曲はTaylor Swiftの祖母でありオペラ歌手で2003年に亡くなったMajorie Finleyについて歌ったものだそうで，冒頭の「そんなに優しくしなくていいの，利口になれなくなっちゃうし，そこまで利口になっちゃダメ，優しくできなくなちゃうよ」の下りはおそらく彼女の言葉なのでしょう。

とはいうものの，どこからが「優しくする」でどこからが「利口になる」のかの基準はひとつではなく，人によって異なるので，当人にとっては「優しくしている」つもりでも，相手にとっては十分に「利口になっている」という場合も存在するのでしょう。

何事につけても初期値が高ければ高いほどそれに応じて期待値も高くなるため必然的に減点方式に傾きがちですが，逆に初期値が低ければわずかな改善であっても大きく評価されやすくなります。
