Vow エド・シーラン (Ed Sheeran)

タイトルの「Vow」はおそらく主人公の結婚の誓いなのでしょう。いかにもな内容かもしれませんがまさにそれこそがウエディング・ソングに求められるものなのかもしれません。
The title Vow probably refers to a wedding vow the narrator is making.  It may sound cheesy and corny and that's exactly what is asked for a good wedding song.

最近知り合いで貴重な写真を含むPCのデータのすべてを失ってしまった人がいます。無論当人が最悪に落ち込んでいることはわかりますが，その写真が捉えた瞬間はまだ当人の記憶にあるように思われます。

とりわけ私の場合「永久保存版」と銘打って保存したおいた画像やヴィデオは数多あるものの，文字通り「永久」に「保存」してあるだけでほぼどれも一度も見直していないので仮に今それらが失われてもダメージは少ないように思われますし，さらに言えば失ったことすら気づかない可能性もあります。

この曲，Ed Sheeranが裁判沙汰に巻き込まれ相手側の弁護士に当時の携帯を提出することになったのがキッカケだそうで，久しぶりに電源を入れてロック解除した画面に最初に出てきたのは2022年に薬物の過剰摂取で亡くなったJamal Edwardsからのメッセージ，二番目が元カノそして三番目がもう10年くらい連絡を取っていない家族のひとりだったそうです。

その電話の中には亡くなった友人たちとの会話や友人と映っている当時の写真などが残っており，次々とそれを見ながらもう二度と会えないのだと気づき泣いたのだとか。

この曲は時差ボケに悩まされつつインドで今度のアルバムを仕上げていた日の夜中の２時に自分ひとりで書き上げ夜が明けてそのまま録音したのだそうです。

最初のヴィデオを見た時に「よくこんなにEd Sheeranに似た子を連れて来たな」と思ったのですが成長しても（当然と言えば当然ですが）やはり似ています。それにしてもこの2人を見て「もうこんなに・・・」と親戚の子どもを見るような気分になってしまい，己の年齢を痛感しました。改めて考えればこの曲を取り上げてからもう10年です。

A Teamをこちらに投稿してほぼ10年が過ぎようとしています。当時その曲にコメントをお寄せくださった方が「現時点でEd Sheeranの最高傑作はこのThe A Teamでしょう。しかし、全てではない。それを証明する、すばらしい楽曲やパフォーマンスをEdは生み出してくれる、とわたしは信じています」と仰っていましたが，まさしくその通りになりました。Almost ten years have passed since I posted his The A Team here.  One person who commented on the post said, "It's true that The A Team is his best piece so far but I don't think it's the only one.  I believe Ed Sheeran will keep writing great songs like that and show a great performance to prove his immense potential."  They proved absolutely right.

（余談）

この曲は恩師とも言うべき故Michael Gudinskiの追悼のためにEd Sheeranがオーストラリアを訪れ２週間の検疫期間のうちに書き上げた曲だと言われていますが，最初にこの曲を耳にした際にはそういった背景は知りませんでした。

ただ 「Visiting Hours ([病院での]面会時間)」というタイトルを見た瞬間，これはスゴイ曲だと予感しました。たいていの人間なら目にしている事務的な日常を感じさせる言葉でありながら，それだけで「入院中の大切な誰かを想う曲」であることを連想できたからです。

このブログも本日で１０周年となりましたが，その節目をEd Sheeranのこの曲で飾れたことがなによりの幸運です。

自分の子どもを持つというのは一般人にとって大事件であるようですが，Ed Sheeranのようなポップ・スターにとってもそれは同じで，妻から子どもが出来たと言われ，今までのような生活をしているわけにはいかないと思ったようです。

（余談）

歌詞に登場する「you」は一体何を指しているのでしょうか？一般的に考えれば主人公以外の人間ですが，The Weekndの歌詞ではそれが薬物である場合も少なくありません。

無論Ed Sheeranの場合，自分の子どもが生まれたことで（酒とパーティー三昧の）生き方を変えたと言っているのでそのセンは薄いと思われますが，仮にこの曲に登場する「you」が薬物だったとしても，それはそれで成立するような気がします。

この曲に登場する相手はEd Sheeranの妻であり，彼の娘のLyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeranの母であるCherry Seabornだと言われています。この曲に登場するのもおそらく彼女でしょう。
It's said the second person in this song is Cherry Seaborn who is wife of Ed Sheeran and the mother of his daughter Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.  Probably she's also the girl in this song.

高校時代に付き合っていたものの，大学進学をきっかけに別々の道に進み，それぞれが別れと出会いを経験し数年後に再会。片やスポーツの世界で認められる一方，大企業に就職し輝かしいキャリア形成の真っ最中，一方は音楽の世界で世界的に成功した大スター。

・・・私が編集者なら「ちょっと盛りすぎじゃないでしょうか？」とダメ出しをしそうですが，これが実話なのでどうしようもありません。

Sword from the Stone パッセンジャー (Passenger)

別にネイティヴではありませんが「ほらな俺も頑張ったけど，アーサー王とは違うから岩から剣は抜けないよ」下りに関して言えば，それまで他の誰も引き抜けなかった名剣エクスカリバーを少年のアーサーだけが埋まっている岩から引き抜けたというアーサー王伝説に因んだものだと確信しています。だとすると主人公は相手に自分が相応しくないと感じているのでしょう。
I'm no native English speaker but I'm pretty sure that the line, "And I’ve tried and I can’t pull the sword from the stone" refers to the Legend of King Arthur in which nobody else but a boy Arthur could pull a magic sword named Excalibur from a giant rock in which it's fixed.  So it means that the narrator feels themselves not good enough to be the significant other to the second person.

COVID 19の影響を最も受けている職業のひとつがミュージシャンや演劇関係者などのいわゆるパフォーマーと呼ばれる人々でしょう。あくまでも個人的な見解ですが，この曲はそういった業界に身を置く人々に向けた曲でもあるように思われます。

「afterglow」という言葉にはいくつかの意味があります。ひとつはエネルギー源を取り去った後に残る光。またそれ以外に心地よい経験をした後の気分の良さを表すこともあります。
A word "afterglow" represents few things.  One of them is the light emitted after removal of a source of energy such as the sun and fire.  It also means a comfortable feeling after a feel-good experience.

この歌詞に登場する「奇跡 (a miracle)」ですが，個人的には先ごろ生まれたEd Sheeranの娘のことではないかと思っています。理由は「miracles」ではなく「a miracle」と単数形になっている点，英語圏ではこどもを授かることを「miracle」と表現することが少なくないからです。また「afterglow」には残光という意味があるので，こちらは彼と彼の妻が年を取って弱った時のことを言っているのかもしれません。

我が家にはお土産としてもらった「いやげもの」が山のようにありますが，どういうわけか人間（自分も含めて）というものは旅に出ると突然土産を買わねばという気持ちになるようです。

（余談）

我が家にある「いやげもの」のなかでも最も処分に困っているのが「ピエロ人形」で，くれた当人はそれが大変気に入って購入したようですが，インテリアと全く合わないため部屋には飾れません。しかもモノが人形だけに無下にするとなにか祟りがありそうで怖い。

ところで今回偶然にもNancyという名前がAnnのニックネームだと知り，Wikipediaで元ファースト・レディのNancy Reaganを検索したところ，確かに「 Anne Frances Robbins」という名前で誕生したいたことが判明しました。
