このブログを始めた頃Adeleには男運がないと言ったことがあります。なにしろ彼女の曲に出て来る男が揃いも揃って「ハズレくじ」だったからですが，彼女がSimon Koneckiとの間に子どもを産んだと聞き，これでやっと彼女の男運にも光が見えたかと安堵したものです。

・・・が結局は離婚。それによって幸か不幸か自説が以前以上に力を持ってしまいました。

歌詞の中で印象に残ったのが「許そうと思ったら誰にも言わずにそうすることが一番楽なこともある（Sometimes forgiveness is easiest in secret）」の下りでした。「Sometimes forgiveness is THE EASIEST in secret」ではなく「Sometimes forgiveness is EASIEST in secret」となっているからです。

私の記憶が正しければ，theのつかない最上級は「同じものの程度を比較している」と教えられたはず。したがってこの歌詞が正しいとすると，前者が容易さを他のものと比較しているのに対し，後者は後者のなかでその容易さ程度を比較していると考えられます。

すなわち「許す（forgiveness）」のが最も容易なのは（公に許すのではなく）「こっそりと（in secret）許す」の場合だという意味になります。

確かに「ダイエット」や「抱負」は自分の心の中に秘めておいた方が失敗した時になにかと都合がいいような気がしますが，果たしてこの曲で歌われている内容がそういったものなのかは甚だ疑問です。

「良かれと思ってやってたしすごく期待してたけど (I had good intentions, And the highest hopes)」という主人公ですが，人間が積極的に相手に害をなそうとする場合はあまり多くありません。大抵の場合，相手は「良かれと思って」やっているか，少なくともそのつもりです。
"I had good intentions, And the highest hopes," the narrator says.  There aren't many cases that people actively do harm others with a malicious intention.  Most cases, they do so with a good intention or at least they thinks so.

I Found A Boy アデル (Adele)

Adeleのアルバム「21」（スタンダード・エディションを除く）に収録されている最後の曲ですが， Rolling In The DeepやTurning Tablesを含むこのアルバム全体が，正体不明の彼女の元彼に因んで作られているそうです。だとすれば，アルバムの最後にこの曲を持ってくることによって，彼女は「最高の復讐は幸せになってやること」という言葉を地で行っていることになりますね。
This is the last track from Adele's 21 album (not available in the standard edition, though).  They say the whole album including tracks like Rolling In The Deep and Turning Tables was inspired by her anonymous ex.  So closing the album with this song, she demonstrates "Happiness is the best revenge."

タイトルのWater Under The Bridgeは，実は「すでに終わってしまって変えられないこと」を意味するイディオムだとご存じでしょうか？そのことを知らないとこの曲を理解するのは難しいかもしれません。タイトルだけを見ると破局ソングかと思うこの曲ですが「まだ２人は終わりじゃないし，これからも続いてくって(Our love ain't water under the bridge)」という下りからもわかるように，実際にはむしろその逆のことを歌った曲です。

（余談）

リード文で述べた父親との一件ですが，その文脈で考えるとこの歌詞のコーラスの部分は父親がAdeleに向けて過去の自分の行為（娘と妻を捨てたこと）を詫びているように思えてきます。そして仮にそうだとすると，この歌詞は成功した娘と余命いくばくもない父親との対話と捉えられそうな気がします。

おそらく2年以上前のことですが，この曲を取り上げようとしたことがあります。ただ歌詞の内容が全く掴めずどうしようもなくなりました。この曲のメッセージがはっきりわからず，今なら難なく理解できる第１連さえ最後まで訳しきれませんでした。当時はまだ力不足だったのだと思います。まだ歌詞のなかには一点の疑問もないとまでは言い切れない箇所も存在しますが，そろそろこの曲を投稿してもいいでしょう。
Once I tried to pick up this song.  Probably more than 2 years ago.  Soon, however, I found myself lost in the lyrics, completely unable to decipher them.  The message the song was trying to deliver was unclear to me.  I couldn't even finish translating the first verse which now I have no difficulty to understand.  I think I was unprepared then.  Still some lines of the lyrics are not crystal clear to me but now it's time for me to post this.

歌詞に登場するthe cityが具体的にどこを意味するのかはわかりませんが，Adele自身はロンドンの出身らしいので，そこを指しているのかもしれません。

AdeleのRolling In The Deepを聴いた時，私は即座にその曲にハマり，「どうして今までこの曲に気付かなかったのか」と驚き，続けてSomeone Like Youを聴いて，また同じ状態になりました。 それ以来，「どうして今までこの曲に気付かなかったのか」が彼女の曲に対する，いわば枕詞になったわけですが，今回はやや事情が違っていました。この曲を聴いて私がつぶやいたのは，「あの説は本当かもしれん・・・」だったからです。
この曲はつまらないとか凡庸だと言いたいわけではありません。ただこの曲，He Won't GoやChasing The Pavementsなどの他の作品に匹敵するとはどうも言い難い。勿論，私が全くわかっていないだけかもしれません。できることならそうであって欲しいと願っていますし，その方がむしろ嬉しいのですが。
When I heard Adele's Rolling In The Deep, I was hooked instantly, saying "OMG!  How could it be?  I didn't know the song."  Then I heard Someone Like You and said that to myself again.  Soon the phrase became a set epithet for her songs.  It wasn't, however, what came out of my mouth when I listened to the song.  "Oh....The theory might be true...." came instead.
I'm not saying it's boring or mediocre but I don't think it rivals to other songs of hers, including He  Won't Go or Chasing The Pavements.  Maybe I'm dead wrong.  I rather would like someone to prove me wrong.  I would be happier then.

（補足）

音楽好きの友人曰く，この曲の依頼が来た時，体験をもとに曲を作っているという理由でAdeleは断ったものの，先方からそれでもいいのでと強く依頼されたとか。それを聞くと，私の感想も強ち的外れとは言えないのかもしれません。

さて，個人的に，この歌詞の前半部分は主人公のJames Bondが語っているような気がするのですが，後半は相手役（映画を見ていないのであくまでも推測ですが）の女性が語っているような気がします。

仮にこのように話者が入れ替わる場合であっても，英語では二人称は単数・複数ともyouただひとつなのでさほど変化はありません。しかし，日本語にはそれとは比べものにならないくらいの二人称が存在するため，その点がわからない限り，完全に訳出することができません。

最初にこの曲の歌詞を見た時に，多少の違和感を感じたのは，前半では相手を拒絶するような印象であるのに対して，後半ではその逆の印象を受けるからです。

この歌詞の主人公は同じ１人の人間なのか。それとも前半・後半で別の人間に変わっているのか（NickelbackのFar Awayがこのタイプです。http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.jp/2012/05/far-away-nickelback.html），そして相手（you）も，前半・後半で同じ１人の人間を指すのか。それとも別の人間なのか，あるいは複数の人間を指すのか。

今回一応投稿することにしたものの，今後確認して修正をかける可能性が多分にあることをお伝えしておきます。

（余談）

以前別館でもお話したことがるのですが，絵画に限らず，歌詞であれ曲であれ，およそアーティストという人々が提示する世界というのは，その人というフィルターを通して現れてくる世界です。したがって，そのフィルターの目が細かければ細かいほど，出来上がってくる作品の精度（個性）は上がります。

私見ですが，そのフィルターの目の細かさを決定づけているのがその人の受けた「感動」だと思います。感動だけではなく，怒りや悲しみといったもので心が大きく動いた時，フィルターの目は細かくなり，その感動を表すのに必要最小限のものだけしか通しません。そのため，出来上がった「作品」の純度は上がり，その人以外の人間にも訴えかけてくる。

しかし，そこに「強い心の動き」がなければ，フィルターの目は粗いまま。不純物もすり抜けてしまうので，出来上がった作品の精度も落ちてしまいます。そして幸か不幸か，人間は満足してしまうとその必要な「強い心の動き」を失ってしまいます。

Adeleは先日子どもを出産しました。婚約者の男性とも上手くいっているようです。「アーティスト不幸説」は私の持論ですが，その理由はこの辺にあるのかもしれません。

（追記）

多くの方のご意見を参考に，映画を見ていない私が作った訳文（ベータ版）ですが，コーラスの部分の2人という箇所を削った以外は特に手を加えておりません。

誰がどの部分を語っているかに関しては，最初の２連は007が，コーラスの部分はＭ，敵役，007の全員ということで解釈しております。理由は主語がweであるためです。

人称代名詞を省くという点に無駄にこだわりのある私は，通常歌詞にweが登場した場合には「2人」「お互い」「一緒」というように訳しております。というのも歌詞，とりわけラヴソングに登場するweは，ほぼ常に2人の人間を指しているからですが，we本来の語義としては，2人以上であればよいわけで，そこが3人であろうと70億人であろうと問題はありません。ゆえにこの場合は，この映画の主要登場人物3人を指しているのではないかと考えました。

仮にそうであるとするならば，これ以降の連は007以外の2人の主要人物，すなわち敵役とMがそれぞれ語っていると考えるのが相応しいように思われます。

そこで「Skyfall is where we start」で始まる次の連は敵役，最後の連はＭが語り手ということで解釈いたしました。

各連及びコーラスの冒頭には，わかりやすいよう，その連の主人公（と私が考える）人物のイニシャルをつけておきました。

あららやっちゃいましたね。彼女（主人公です）は恋人を束縛しすぎたんだと思います。気の毒だとは思いますが，心情としては私は彼（恋人）側ですね。以前にも申し上げた（Amy WinehouseもLove Is A Losing Gameでそう申しております）ように，愛（特に恋愛）というのは，パワー・ゲームでして「惚れた方が負け」なんです。主人公は最初は優位に立っていたものの，次第に相手が離れていったんでしょう。「しばらく離れてひとりにしてあげた」と言ってますが，多分違うと思いますね。
それにしても，彼女は自分のことを「お天気屋なのに皮肉ばかりで，気が多いくせに暗いヤツ」と言ってますが，それが本当なら，相手の男はそもそも一体その彼女のどこが良くて好きになったんでしょうか？ひょっとしてマニア？
Oooh, the protagonist in the lyrics has gone too far.  She seems to have put her boyfriend in a tight spot.  I feel sorry for her but I guess I'm on his side.  As I said (and Amy Winehouse did in her Love Is A Losing Game) before, love (especially a romantic one) is a power struggle.  One who loves the other more always loses.  I think she had a high ground at the beginning but gradually started losing him.  She says she gave him the space so he could breathe.  Did she?  Sorry but I don't think so.

最初に聴いた時にはよくある別れの歌だと思っていましたが，ネットでAdeleがこの曲を友人2人のために書いたという投稿を見つけました。その2人は付き合っていて，男性の方がヘロイン依存症で治療中だったとか。 想像以上に深い内容の曲だったわけです。
このブログを始める前は，歌詞とりわけ英語の歌詞というものにそれほど関心を払っていませんでした。もしブログを始めていなかったら，これほど美しく力強いこの曲を，内容も理解せぬまま通り過ぎていたでしょう。そのことを考えると，いかに自分がラッキーだったかを思い知らされます。
When I first listened to the song, I thought it was one of breakup songs.  However, I found a post on the Internet, saying Adele wrote it for two of her friends.  According to the post, she said in an interview that the two were in a relationship together and one of them (man) went through a rehab to get out of his addition to heroin.  That was much deeper than I had expected.  Before I started this blog, I didn't pay much attention to song lyrics, especially English ones.  If I had not, I would never be appreciate such a beautiful and powerful song.  Thinking of what I might have missed, I'm amazed to realize how lucky I was.

Chasing Pavements アデル(Adele)

彼女のひとつ前のアルバム19からの曲。別れの曲を書かせたらAdeleの右に出るものはいないと思っているのは私一人ではないはず。彼女のミドルネームはbreakupなんじゃなかろうかと思えるほどです。
この曲、特に「どうにか立ち直ったけど、なかなか思い切れなくて、決定的な何かが起こるのを待ってた　だけどそろそろだっていう予感がする　これがそうなのかな？」では、覚えがあるのに言葉には出来ない感情を見事に表現しています。真のアーティストのみに許されることでしょう。こんな曲が書けて彼女のように歌えたらと思いますね。
こんなに素晴らしい才能があると、あの悪名高いに２７才クラブの入会資格が十分にあるわけですが、どうかその誘いが来ても断ってもらいたいですね
This is from her previous album 19.  I'm quite sure that I'm not the only one who thinks Adele is the master of breakup songs. It seems to me that her middle name is "breakup".
In this song, especially the part "I build myself up, And fly around in circles, Waitin' as my heart drops, And my back begins to tingle, Finally, could this be it" she successfully describes what many of us have experienced before but cannot express in words.  Only a true artist can do this and she is.  I wish I could write a song like this and sing like her.
Having such an amazing talent, she is already entitled to be a new member of the notorious 27 club.  I hope she will not accept their invitation.

Single Ladiesの時にも言ったと思いますが、恋愛関係における主導権は頻繁に両者の間を移動します。この曲では、最初は男性側にあった主導権が彼女の側に移ります。そしておそらく彼女の現彼へと移行すると思われます。この曲が収録されているアルバム「２１」について Adele自身「元彼への恨み節」と語っています。この曲を聴いて思い出したのが、あのMichael Buble。彼は数年前に婚約していた女性と別れ（二股ではない模様）、今年10歳以上年の離れた女優・モデルの女性と結婚しました。彼女は Haven't Met You Yetのヴィデオにも登場します。
As I mentioned in the post of Single Ladies, the high ground of love often moves back and forth between two parties.  In this song, it stayed with her boyfriend at first, but then moves to her and eventually will move to her new boyfriend.  Speaking of her album 21, Adele herself said it was sort of "bitching about an ex-boyfriend".  This song reminds me of Michael Buble who was married to an actress/model who was more than 10 years younger than him this year after breaking up with his long-term girlfriend (and fiance) few years ago.  She appeared in his video "Haven't Met You Yet".

説明は不要でしょう。実はこの曲のことは知っていたのですが、作曲がBob Dylanとは知りませんでした。Garth Brooks、Bryan Ferry、Billy Joelといった面々がカヴァーしています。Bob Dylanと聞いて頭に浮かぶのは、反逆だの、反体制だの、反戦だのといった単語で、こんな美しいラヴソングを書いているとは思いませんでした。
ここでは，本家の他にもカヴァーを２つ取り上げました。一つはAdeleのものでもう一つはEd Sheeranのものです。どちらも素晴らしい。後者のヴィデオでは 1:45-48と2:47の辺りに中断による間が出来てしまっていますが、それでも十分楽しめます。

No explanation would be necessary.  Honestly, I knew the song but didn't know Bob Dylan wrote it.  Artists including Garth Brooks, Bryan Ferry and Billy Joel have covered it.  The name Bob Dylan reminds me of words like rebel, anti-establishment and anti-war but not of a beautiful love song.

Here I picked up two covers as well as the original:  One by Adele and the other by Ed Sheeran.  Both are great covers.  Sorry for the break around 1:45-48 and 2:47 in the latter video but still you can appreciate the song.

蛇足かもしれませんが，英語歌詞に登場するI'd go black and blueという箇所は，おそらく(be) black and blue（全身あざだらけ）という表現の変形であると思われるため，その文脈で和訳しています。

One And Only アデル(Adele)

優れたアーティストについての私の仮説を覚えておいででしょうか。Adele自身によると、この曲のモチーフになった人物ですが、その後「ものすごいバカ」だったということがわかったそうです。彼女のアルバム「２１」のなかで元彼のことを歌ってないのはこの曲だけ。元彼とのイザコザで成長していたらもっとマシな人に出会ってるハズなんですけどね。男運の悪さを楽しんでるようにも見えます。
ところでいわゆる「自分に相応しい運命の人」を表現する時、英語ではこの曲のタイトルのようにOne and Onlyと表現しますが、日本語では「赤い糸で結ばれた相手」と表現します。これが非常に興味深い。英語の運命の人は単数ですが日本語の赤い糸で結ばれた相手なら複数の場合もありうるからです。（糸は何本でも結べます）。これはキリスト教や神道と関係があるんでしょうか。前者は一神教ですが後者は八百万の神ですからね。
余談ですが、このヴィデオ（ライヴ）では曲のつなぎがアルバムとは違い少し短めになっています。
Do you remember my theory about an outstanding artist?  According to Adele herself, this song is written about a guy but she realized that he was a "complete dickhead".  This is the only song on her album 21 that is not about her ex-boyfriend.  If she had learned from her bout with her ex, she should have met a decent man.  Is she addicted to a certain kind of bad luck?
To represent the right person for us, English often use "the one and only" while Japanese does "the person tethered (to us) by a red thread".  I find it very interesting because "the one and only" should be singular but "the person(s) tethered by a red thread" could be plural.  Does this have anything to do with Christianity and Shintoism?  The former is monotheism and the latter polytheism.  
The bridge in this take (LIVE) is different from that in the album take.  This is a little shorter.

Set Fire To The Rain アデル(Adele)

アデルは男運にあまり恵まれていないようだというお話を以前にしたかと思いますが、この曲を聴いてそれが確信に変わりました。ただ私にはアーティストに関して独自の持論があります。すなわち、非凡な才能を持つアーティストとなるためには、特定分野の才能に恵まれていると同時に、それ以外の分野ではまったく恵まれていないということが必要です。彼女の場合、音楽的才能について異議を唱える人はまずいないと思います。（彼女のもつ「何か」は「才能」などという普通の言葉では表現しきれないところがありますが）。この持論に従うと、音楽的才能以外の点では｢恵まれてない」ことが必要になりますが、彼女の「男運の悪さ」はそれを裏付けています。
余談ですが、プロデューサーに減量するよう言われた際、自分が作っているのは見て楽しむ音楽ではなく、耳で聴いて楽しむ音楽であると一蹴したとか。その自信が好きです。
ところで妙な話ですが、この曲を聴くと何故か’７０年代の日本の歌謡曲を思い出すのですが、残念なことに題名が思い出せません。どなたかご存知の方はいらっしゃいませんか？
Did I tell you that Adele doesn't seem to be very lucky with men before?  Yes, I did.  Listening to this song, now I'm convinced I was right.  I have my own theory, however, about an artist.  I believe that what is essential for being an extraordinary artist is that "being extremely gifted in a specific field but otherwise in other fields."  I think no one can deny her musical talent.  (The word "talent" is too modest for me to describe "something" in her, though.)  In my theory, she should be "misfortuned"in every other point but music and not being lucky with men endorses my theory.  
Anyway, I head that being told by her producer to lose some weight, she declined it saying, " I don't make music for eyes.  I make music for ears."  I love her confidence.
I know it sounds odd but this song reminds me of some Japanese popular song(s).  Unfortunately, I don't remember their titles but I'm sure they were hits in '70s.  Does anyone know what they are?

アデル（Adele）のTurning Tablesです。彼女の曲を取り上げるのはこれで３回目ですが、最初のSomeone Like Youといい、Rolling In The Deepといい、あまり恋愛運には恵まれてなさそうな主人公ばかり。これが彼女Adeleの実体験から来ているとしたらかなり男運は悪そうです。
Turning Tables from Adele's album 21.  I have already translated two more songs in the album, Someone Like You and Rolling In The Deep here.  The heroine in these songs as well as in this does not seem to be very lucky in love.  If she is a reflection of Adele herself, the singer also doesn't seem to be very lucky with men either.

追記：豊かな人称代名詞は日本語の特徴の一つですが，それだけに使い方を誤ると逆効果です。この訳文も最初は「あなた」と「私」を使っていたのですが，どうしても翻訳調になってしまうので，思い切って，人称代名詞を使わずに訳し直してみました。自分としては，こちらのほうがこの状況（別れ話の修羅場）に合っていると思っています。
