一般的にはこの曲はヴェトナム戦争がきっかけでできたものだと思われていますが，実際にはKeith Richardsがロンドンで突然の雨に人々が雨宿りをしようとしているのを見てできたんだとか。

親ならば自分の価値観と子どものそれが同じであって欲しいと願い，自分が良くないと思うものから子どもを守り，自分がイヤだと思うことは子どもにもして欲しくないと思うのはもっともなことですが，それが中世であったならいざ知らず，世の中が急激に変わっている現代にあってはかなり難しいような気がします。

少なくとも私はいたたまれなくなります。ただ他の人々と違う服装をしているだけで他にはなにひとつマズい点がないのは自分でもわかっていますが，それでも何か問題があるのではないか，自分も黒を着なければダメなのではないかと不安に感じてしまいます。

ここまでわかりやすくはないにしろ，いわゆるネット上の「批判」の大半は，この場合と大差ありません。いわば黒づくめの側から「黒を着ていないなんて！」と私が糾弾されているようなものです。

この曲のタイトルを見てFats DominoのBlueberry Hill を思い出すかもしれませんがColdplayのChris Martinによると，この曲はThe Beatlesを意識したものであり，Violet Hillはあの伝説的なバンドとともに語られることの多いAbby Roadの近くの道だそうです。

その人の周囲の人々に限らず，私を含めて人間は悩みを打ち明けられると，その悩みが深ければ深いほど適切な言葉を見つけられず，ついリードで述べたようなことを言ってしまいがちですが，それはおそらくそこに責任回避できる余地があるからでしょう。

例えば「モテたいと思っても全然モテない」という深い悩みに「髪を切って洋服を買え」と具体的な指示をし，相談者がそれに従ったにもかかわらず，それでも状況が改善しない（＝モテない）となると，指示を出したこちら側にある種の責任が生じます。

これに対して「時間が解決してくれるし何もかも上手くいく」と言っておけば，仮に３か月後にまだモテていなかったとしても「まだ時期じゃない」と言っておけば逃げ道が残されています。

極端な話，仮に相談者がモテないまま一生を終えたとしても「時間がちょっと余計にかかってこの世では間に合わなかったがあの世ではモテまくる」と言っておけばいいのです。なにしろそうでないとは誰も証明できません。

逆にそう言われたことで，相談者の心に余裕ができてモテ出した時は「ほらね」と言っておけばいいわけで要するにバーナム効果ですが，だからといって「お前が一生モテるわけない」と言ってしまうと，仮にそれが正しかったとしても「ヒドイ奴だ」と非難されかねません。

したがって問題が大きくなればなるほどこう言わねばならなくなるのは無理からぬところでしょう。

それはともかく，個人的に「来る，きっと来る（本当は「ウウ，きっと来る」らしいですが）」と言われると貞子しか浮かばないので，むしろ暗い未来がやって来そうで不安になります。

Blessing Offorのことをあまり知らなかったのでネットで調べてみたところ，ナイジェリア出身でナッシュビルで活動するシンガー・ソングライターで視覚障碍者であることが判明しました。

緑内障を治してやりたいと願う両親によって，彼は６歳の時に叔父と一緒にアメリカに移民してきたようですが，残念ながら数年後に右目を失明してしまったそうです。

ただそれがキッカケで音楽に傾倒したとも言えるわけで，その結果として今の彼があることを考えれば，この曲の「きっと今よりマシになる，本当だよ，辛くて仕方なくたって幸せの方からちゃんとやってくる (I know there's gonna be some brighter days, I swear that love will find you in your pain)」の下りには彼ならではの強力な説得力を感じます。

Skin of My Teeth デミ・ロヴァート (Demi Lovato)

Demi Lovatoからこの感じは全く想像していませんでした。歌詞の内容はいつもの彼女の芸風ですがこのスタイルは意外でした。
This is the last song I expected to come from Demi Lovato.  What she's talking about in this song isn't surprising to me but not in this style.

例えばお昼にタンメンを一杯食べることにした，これは自由意志ではないかと言う人もいるかもしれません。確かに一見すると自由意志であるように見えますが本当にそうでしょうか？

件のタンメンにしてもすでに知っている「ラーメン」「チャーシューメン」あるいは「カレー」「そば」「ハンバーガー」などの選択肢の中から選んでいるに過ぎません。

さらに言えば，自身の好み，その時の体調や懐具合，そこにかけられる時間などを瞬時に比較考量した結果として「タンメン」を選んでいるに過ぎず，仮に何らかの理由で懐具合が大変に良く，また時間的にも余裕があれば「うなぎ」「寿司」あるいは「満漢全席」という選択をしたかもしれません。

すなわち「自由意志」というものは突き詰めれば，様々なパラメタを考えた上での自分にとっての「最適な解（あるいはそれに近似するもの）」であるに過ぎません。

仮にそうだとすれば「誰かを好きになる」こともその例外ではなく，したがってそこに「自由意志」などというものを無理矢理に介在させてコントロールするのは容易ではないでしょう。

「そのまま無理せず流されておけ」というのは一見無責任にも思えますが，実際のところ本人が無意識にその時点での「最適解」を決めているのですから，そこに至るまでの無数のパラメタに何らかの変化がない限り，人間の意思でどうにかすることは不可能であるように思われます。

美しい曲ですがシンプルなので曲の良さを最大限に発揮させられる人はさほど多くありません。この曲の真価を見せることは容易ではありませんが，Sam SmithとLabrinthは見事にそれを成し遂げていると思います。
It's a beautiful song and so simple.  I don't think many people can make the best of it.  It's not very easy to show the beauty of it without compromising anything.  I think Sam Smith & Labrinth nailed it.
