Rio デュラン・デュラン (Duran Duran)

タイトルのRioは曲の途中で笑っている女性の名前だと思っていたのですが，Duran Duranによると，それはアメリカのメタファーであり，彼らはそこで成功したいと思っていたんだとか。同名のアルバムが同国で129週もチャート入りしたことや，2003年に NMEの100 Greatest Albums of All Timeの65位に入ったことを考えると，Rioは彼らに微笑んでくれたようです。
I thought the song title, 'Rio' represented a girl's name who's laughing in the song.  According to Duran Duran themselves, however, it's a metaphor for America where they wanted to be successful.  Considering that the album sharing the title with this song remained on the US charts 129 weeks and was listed as number 65 in the NME 100 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2003,  I think Rio smiled at them.

（余談）

このミュージック・ヴィデオ，ペンキだの水だの色んな意味で「思わせぶり」なのですが，ならばUsherとかUsherとかUsherとかのR&B系のヴィデオと同じ系列かと言うと決してそうとも言い切れず，途中で思わず「コントかよ！」とツッコミを入れたくなるような場面が登場します。

以前「ColdplayといいこのClean Banditといい，強烈なミュージック・ヴィデオを作るアーティストが揃いも揃ってイギリス人なのには本当に何か理由があるのでしょうか？」と述べたことがありましたが，そういえばDuran Duranもイギリス人。80年代のこの曲からして既にこうなのですから，こうなるともはや「伝統」と言って差し支えないのかもしれません。
