ヴィデオでは２人が１番と２番の歌詞をそれぞれ分けて歌っています。思うにそれぞれが別の２人の人間の心情を語っているんじゃないでしょうか。１番目の歌詞に出てくる相手はもう亡くなっています。主人公がその人に会えるのは夢の中だけ。これに対して、２番の歌詞では、「君になかなか電話できない」という箇所から見て相手はまだ生きています。
歌詞には、ティム・バートンの「ナイトメアー・ビフォア・クリスマス」を思わせる箇所がいくつも出てきます。ハロウィン前にやればもっと良かったのかもしれませんが、でもまだクリスマス前ですよね？
This is definitely one of the most ambiguous lyrics that I have ever translated. Yes, I think I understand the story line of the lyrics but not details. What do "the shadow in the background of the morgue" and "the unsuspecting victim of the darkness in the valley" refer to? Is the second person dead or just not with the first person anymore?
In the video, two people, sing the first and the second verse respectively. I guess each verse represents the mind of two different individuals. The second person in the first verse is not in this world anymore. The only place where the first person (the narrator) see the second is in his dream. In the second verse, however, the second person is still alive because of the telephone (=call) reference.
The lyrics have many references to Tim Burton's animated film, "The Nightmare Before Christmas". It would be much better if I had posted this before Halloween but still it's before Christmas, isn't it?.
