State of The Art ゴーティエ (Gotye)

When Somebody That I Used To Knowがさまざまな音楽チャートを席捲した時，多くの人がGotye (とこの曲) は「一発屋」だと言う声を多く聞きました。彼のHearts A MessやEyes Wide Openを知っていて，ファンを自認していた私はそれを聞き多少ムッとしたのですが，このところある意味それも正しいのかもと思い始めました。
ただひとつだけハッキリさせておきたいのですが，「一発屋」という言葉の本来の意味は，売れて長く第一線で活躍したいと強く願いながらそれがかなわない人を言うのだと思います。しかし，Thank You For Your Timeやこんな曲を作るところを見る限り，Gotyeがそんなことを望んでいるようには思えません。確かにSTIUTKは彼にとって最初で最後のメガヒットかもしれませんが，彼自身はさしてそのことを気にしていないような気がします。
When his Somebody That I Used To Know swept various music charts, many people said Gotye (and the song) is a "One Hit Wonder."  Knowing his "Hearts A Mess" and "Eyes Wide Open" and being a big fan of him, I was bit offended to hear that.  Now I start thinking they're right in a way.
I would like to make it clear that I believe the true meaning of the word "One Hit Wonder" is a person (or a group) who strongly wishes to break through as a star and stay music charts for a long time.  Gotye, however, doesn't seem to wish such a thing, writing a song like "Thank You For Your Time" and this.  It's true that STIUTK may be his first and last monster hit but he doesn't seem to care it very much.

（余談）

リード文でも述べたように，Thank You For Your Timeやこの曲を聞くと，Gotyeの「商売っ気のなさ」を感じます。およそ「売れよう」とか「当てよう」とかいう気持ちが感じられません。なんとなく自分のやりたい音楽をやれればそれでいいという彼の欲のなさが伝わってきます。この点「遊び人」を気取る一方で，キッチリ売れそうな曲を出してくる我が師匠とは正反対の立ち位置でしょう。

考えてみればこの2人は様々な点で好対照です。外見に関しては双方かなり高レベルだと思うのですが，見るからにオタク臭（←賛辞です）のするGotyeに比べ，いわば「リア充」オーラを出しまくっている我が師匠。

脱ぎっぷりでも両者はいい勝負です。あれほどやたらに脱いでいる割に，特に鍛えている風でもないGotye。これに対して我が師匠は鍛えまくってます。服を着ていても，万年スーパーの下着売り場で買って来たようなグレイや茶色のＶネックのＴシャツ姿のGotyeに比べ，（おそらく）ブランド物であろうと思しき服を完璧に着こなしている師匠と，わざとらしいまでに対照的です。

またGotyeは10代の頃全くモテなかったそうですが，おそらく師匠は，彼女に不自由したことなど一度もなかったでありましょう（←実際どうだったかは知りませんが）。付き合う相手も，比較的普通っぽい女性のGotyeに比べ，見るからに「魔性の女」感漂うタイプばかりの我が師匠です。

とはいうものの，現実に目を向けると，Gotyeには長年の恋人がいますが，師匠の場合には「破局」がすでに枕詞状態です。モテなかった（←当人がそう言っています）Gotyeと，モテまくりの師匠ですが，こうしてみると人生それが全てでもないのだなと妙に納得してしまいます。
