The First Cut Is The Deepest P. P. アーノルド (P. P. Arnold / Sheryl Crow)

複数の選択肢の中から有名な曲のオリジナル版を選ぶネット上のクイズを通してこの曲を知りました。取り上げられていた曲のなかにはI Will Always Love YouやRespectといった知っているものもあったのですが大変は知らない曲でした。 この曲もその一つ。作曲はCat Stevensですが，シングルとしては，10代の頃にひどい結婚生活を経験したP. P. Arnoldが1967にリリースしたものがオリジナルです。
A multiple-choce online quiz about the original of some well-known songs brought me to this song.  I recognized some of them like I Will Always Love You and Respect but most of them were new to me.  This was one of them.  It's written by Cat Stevens and originally released as a single in 1967 by P. P. Arnold who once was in an abusive marriage in her teens.

（余談）

元々Cat Stevensが作った曲なので歌詞に登場する「あいつ」はsheになっているのですが，Sheryl Crowの歌を聞いていると，その部分がheになっています。そのため，ここではジェンダーを（なるべく）意識させない訳文にしました。

それはともかく，この主人公が今回幸せになれたかどうかは偏にそのキャラにかかっているような気がします。「the first cut is the deepest」と言っているところから，この主人公は次（今回）「the second cut is not as deep as the first one」と考えているのでしょう。

無論通常はそうでしょうし，またそうであってもらいたいとは思いますが，主人公が「薄井幸代」だとより深みに嵌っていき「the second cut is far deeper than the first one」になっていくような気がします。
