真偽のほどはわかりませんが，ウワサではこの曲はTimberlakeの友人で共同経営者のTrace Ayala のことを歌っているのだとか。女優のElisa Cuthbertと紆余曲折を経て婚約したものの，この曲がリリースされる前に別れてしまったという一件を扱っていると言われています。

（余談）

ところで，タイトルにもなっている，このWhat Goes Around Comes Aroundという表現は歌詞に頻繁に登場します。要するに「自業自得」「因果応報」といったところです。「今に見てろよ」的な文脈で使われているような気がしますが，よくよく考えれば，基本的には何にでも当てはまるはずなので，今What Goes Around Comes Aroundといっている本人も，あまり度を越すと今度は自分がWhat Goes Around Comes Aroundと周囲から言われてしまうという危険性をはらんでいます。

したがって，この歌詞の主人公の場合も，自分を裏切った元彼女を恨むのは仕方ないにしても，それをいつまでもグチっていると，次なる彼女候補から「いつまでもグチグチと小さいヤツ」と言われかねません。

ここはひとつ，募る恨みや憤懣やる方ない思いも敢えて心の中に留めておいて，彼女を非難する周囲に対して「いやどっちも悪かったし・・・」と言葉を濁しておくのが戦略としては正しいように思われます。
