This song resurfaced in my mind when I heard of his untimely end. I heard some people claim this song is a gay anthem. They scoffed his famous Japanese cover as a tasteless radio-edit and didn't reflect what the song is all about.

それ以来リードで述べた話をずっと信じてきたわけですが，先日ふと思いついてこの曲の歌詞を見たところ，ほぼ日本語歌詞と内容が同じであることに気が付きいました。
そもそも原曲についても，その真偽はさておき，リードシンガーで共作者のVictor Willisが「巷で言われているような意味ではない」と公式に発表しています。したがって，この曲を「ゲイの応援歌」だとする根拠は，あくまでもあちらのYMCAが当時いわゆる「出会いの場」として頻繁に機能していたからという点のみであり，そう考えれば日本語版は制作者の意図をむしろ忠実に表現していたのかもしれません。
清く正しい彼の日本語版を聞きながら「わかってないね」と思っていた己を恥じるとともに，彼にその非礼を詫びたいと思います。
・・・にもかかわらず，どうしても「清く正し」くない内容に聞こえてしまうのは，己の邪心のなせるわざでしょうか？
