子どもの頃，自分が寝ている間に周囲の大人たちが何をやっているのか疑っていました。ひょっとしてダメと言われたあの美味しいお菓子をみんなで食べているのかも。世の中の楽しいことが詰まった場所にみんなで出かけているのかも，と。

（余談）

あのロスチャイルド家に生まれていたのならともかく，普通の家庭ではそんなことがあるわけはありませんが，それでも当時の私は大人の「犯行現場」を見つけるべく眠るまいと無駄な抵抗をしていたように記憶しています。

その頃の私と同様，この主人公もいわば無駄な努力をしているわけですが，人間が眠らずにいられる世界記録は1948年生まれのRandy Gardnerが高校時代の1964年に樹立した264.4時間（11日と25分）だそうです。

世界記録でも２週間もたないのですから，この主人公も無理をせずさっさと眠った方がよいように思われます。
